The Province of Ulster region

In the north West corner of Ireland, Donegal and its wonderful coastline can be best described as rugged mountains sweeping down to the Atlantic where the many inlets host an array of glorious sandy beaches. The region is blessed with more than its fair share of spectacular links golf courses. The surrounding sea is a paradise for wind surfers and anglers alike.

Away from the coast the scenery turns to wooded glens nestled between rocky peaks. The most famous of these is Glenveagh National Park and Castle.

Downings

North Donegal is a region of inlets and peninsulas. The fishing village of Downings is located on Rosguill Peninsula home to the Atlantic drive, a coastal route which follows a stunning scenic road around the peninsula. The views north over the Atlantic and westward towards Horn Head will live in the memory.

The village itself boasts a sandy beach sheltered from the Atlantic which slopes gently providing an ideal safe environment for children. The beach has a segregated area for water sports.

So what can you do in and around Downings?

GOLF - at the links of Rosapenna, choose from the Old course designed by no less a man than old Tom Morris himself or the newer Sandy Hills ranked 17th in Ireland (both 5mins), or cross the new bridge linking Rosguill to Fanad penninsula to Portsalon (30mins) or Dunfanaghy(30mins). A golfers paradise.

PITCH and PUTT

If you or the children are just beginners Rosapenna has the perfect short course to get you hooked.

WATER SPORTS

The beach hosts wind surfing competitions attracting enthusiasts from around the world.

You can learn to dive at the local Mevagh diving school

FISHING

Sea angling charters are available and the local river Lackagh provides catch for those who prefer fresh water.

WALKING

Choose from either Tramore or the village beach or take a short trip and walk the costal path at Ards Friary and Forest park. Half an hour will take you to the famous Glenveagh National Park.Whatever you choose you'll not find fresh air and views to match it anywhere.

RAMELTON

Vist this historic village scene of the "Flight of the Earls" .

KEEP FIT

If all that walking doesn't do the trick the Downings Bay leisure centre includes gym, pool, sauna and jacuzzi.

HORSE RIDING

There is an excellent riding school in nearby Cranford (10 mins)

EATING OUT

Great choice with the two village hotels providing a range from pub snacks to a la carte. Mary's bar in Glen, and the Singing Pub specialise in seafood. If you're staight off the course the Rosapenna Pavillion boasts a fine restaurant.

PUBS

The area has three fine examples of the traditional Irish bar. Try Mary's in Glen, the Singing Pub on the Atlantic drive, or within a short stroll, the Harbour Bar for a great pint and suberb live music with views over the bay.

"Genuine home from home!"

Travelled here during the Easter holidays with 2 young children. Delighted with the house we rented - very clean on arrival and the kitchen included a microwave, washing machine & dishwasher. Also had tv & dvd player to keep kids amused!
Located just a short walk away from the village where you will find hotels & pubs and a great beach. We travelled around the area would recommend visiting the nearby Glenveagh National Park. We had a great relaxing family break and would definitely return to the property.

"Really lovely modern and comfortable house within walking distance of Downings seaside, golf and pubs."

This house is really lovely. Modern, comfortable and spacious, it comfortably slept 8 for us. Beautiful beach is a short walk away and great scenic walks around Atlantic Drive. The pubs & restaurants in Downings village are a short walk away and great craic. Rossapenna golf facility is less than 5 minutes drive with a number of other good courses not too far away. I would recommend this very highly for families or groups.

"Excellent location, outstanding property within walking distance to "ceol agus craic", a warm Donegal family welcome."

Spacious, spotless property within walking distance of all amennities. A short walk back from restaurants and bars at night. I recommend an early morning stroll to the clear blue waters of the Atlantic, a must for families and romantics alike.

Really pleased you enjoyed the house and its surroundings. Thank you for your feedback.
