The Loire Valley region
The Loire Valley is an outstanding cultural landscape of great beauty, containing historic towns and villages, great architectural monuments, and rolling green hills dotted with more than a thousand chateaux and fine vineyards. It is the charm of its gentle pace of life that has, for centuries, made it a sought-after location for royalty, poets and writers. Regional highlights are all within driving distance.
For those interested in wine, Vouvray, Chinon and Saumur are within easy reach. We can recommend vineyards to visit and even arrange a day’s tour for guests so that you can sample the wine without having to worry about doing any of the driving.
So many chateaux are within easy reach of Les Petites Cigognes, including Chambord, Chenonceau, Villandry, Azay le Rideau, Ussé, Blois, Montresor, Langais, Loches, Chinon and Amboise.
The markets at Chinon (Thursday) and Loches (Wednesday and Saturday) are excellent, their chateaux superb and restaurants well worth a visit.
Amboise was the home of Leonardo de Vinci for many years; Clos Lucé has an excellent exhibition of his work with many full size working models in the large gardens.
Tours is the principal city of the Department, Indre et Loire, in the original Touraine region and now the Centre region of France. The old city contains many mediaeval buildings, a cathedral and a chateau. It is situated at the confluence of the River Loire and River Cher, with excellent walks and boat trips available.
Poitiers is well worth a visit but it is too often only mentioned for Futuroscope.
For those looking for some more active elements to their holiday, Fantasy Forest is within easy reach whilst horse-riding, swimming, canoeing, golf and tennis are available nearby and golf is also available in the area. This area is superb for walking and cycling
There are a variety of Troglodyte caves to visit, both close to Descartes and further afield.
The Brenne Regional Park is superb for its wide variety birds and other wildlife but also has lakes where beaches water-sports are available.
Beauval Zoo is renowned world-wide. Like Edinburgh Zoo, it now features two Giant Pandas from China. The wildlife at Haute Touche is also noteworthy.
Cussay is a small village mid-way between Descartes and Ligueil. It has an excellent boulangerie (bread shop) and a fantastic restaurant.
Descartes is a 5 minute drive from Les Petites Cigognes. It is named after the famous philosopher René Descartes and there is a museum in the centre of town dedicated to his work, life story and extensive travels. Every Sunday morning there is an excellent market with a range of local produce available. Descartes lies on the River Creuse, along which there is a very pleasant walk through the pretty municipal gardens. The gardens are part of the local Parc des Loisirs in which there is an excellent outdoor swimming complex, crazy golf, canoeing on the river and children’s play area. Within the park there is an area containing llamas, donkeys, sheep, rabbits and various birds. This is a superb area for small children.
There are numerous excellent places to eat in Descartes and the local wine shop, Le Dit Vin, well worth a visit.
