The Sardinia region
Sardinia (pron.: /s?r?d?ni?/, Italian: Sardegna [sar?de??a], Sardinian: Sardigna [sar?dinja]) is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily and before Cyprus) and an autonomous region of Italy. The nearest land masses are (clockwise from north) the island of Corsica, the Italian Peninsula, Sicily, Tunisia and the Balearic Islands.
Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, with an area of 23,821 km². It is situated between 38° 51' and 41° 15' latitude north and 8° 8' and 9° 50' east longitude. To the west of Sardinia is the Sea of Sardinia, a unit of the Mediterranean Sea; to Sardinia's east is the Tyrrhenian Sea, which is also an element of the Mediterranean Sea.
The coasts of Sardinia (1,849 km long) are generally high and rocky, with long, relatively straight stretches of coastline, many outstanding headlands, a few wide, deep bays, rias, many inlets and with various smaller islands off the coast.
The island has an ancient geoformation and, unlike Sicily and the mainland of Italy, is not earthquake-prone. Its rocks date from the Palaeozoic Era (up to 500 million years old). Due to long erosion processes the island's highlands, formed of granite, schist, trachyte, basalt (called "jaras" or "gollei"), sandstone and dolomite limestone (called tonneri or "heels"), average at between 300 to 1,000 metres. The highest peak is Punta La Marmora (1,834 m), part of the Gennargentu Ranges in the centre of the island. Other mountain chains are Monte Limbara (1,362 m) in the northeast, the Chain of Marghine and Goceano (1,259 m) running crosswise for 40 km (25 mi) towards the north, the Monte Albo (1057 metres), the Sette Fratelli Range in the southeast, and the Sulcis Mountains and the Monte Linas (1236 metres). The island's ranges and plateaux are separated by wide alluvial valleys and flatlands, the main ones being the Campidano in the southwest between Oristano and Cagliari and the Nurra in the northwest.
A proportionate graph of Sardinian topography: 13.6% of the island is mountainous, 18.5% is flat, and 67.9% is hilly.
Sardinia has few major rivers, the largest being the Tirso, 151 km (94 mi) long, which flows into the Sea of Sardinia, the Coghinas (115 km) and the Flumendosa (127 km). There are 54 artificial lakes and dams which supply water and electricity. The main ones are Lake Omodeo and Lake Coghinas. The only natural freshwater lake is Lago di Baratz. A number of large, shallow, salt-water lagoons and pools are located along the 1,850 km (1,150 mi) of the coastline.
The island has a Mediterranean climate along the coasts, plains and low hills and a continental climate on the interior plateaus, valleys and mountain ranges. During the year there are approximately 135 days of sunshine, with a major concentration of rainfall in the winter and autumn, some heavy showers in the spring and snowfalls in the highlands. The average temperature is between 11 to 17 °C (52 to 63 °F). The Mistral from the northwest is the dominant wind on and off throughout the year, though it is most prevalent in winter and spring. It can blow quite strongly, but it is usually dry and cool and makes for a sailor's paradise.
Costa Smeralda-Porto Rotondo
a natural almost circular, including in the north east of Sardinia, was the venue for PortoRotondo, already dubbed by locals "Poltu Ridundu." A geographical space that was likely to be equipped to become a marina around which to develop a seaside village. It was the Venetian Nicolò and Luigi Conti Dona dalle Rose in 1964 to engage in creating the port and the village.
Almost everything was built spontaneously, following the inspiration and the inspiration of the moment looking at the quality. The idea was that the two brothers could become a PortoRotondo'''' milieu of artists and intellectuals, and the first to respond to the invitation were the sculptors Andrea Cascella and Giancarlo Sangregorio. The first created the meeting point of the tourists: Piazzetta San Marco. The second he realized the square instead of the dock fishermen "Old Dock". Twenty-eight masons worked Gallura granite which served to Andrea Cascella to give shape to the square, the stairs, the facade of the Church of San Lorenzo, with its megalithic cross and the altar.
The Church of San Lorenzo remained empty for a short time, as he had done Andrea Cascella, until he was called the young sculptor Mario Ceroli, who embellished the interior with its magical wooden sculptures, to close the circle, was commissioned at the same Ceroli the Theatre.
The initial idea was re-launched recently with the establishment of the Foundation PortoRotondo, which is carrying out the great artistic work started 45 years ago. In 2007 he created the mosaic of Via del Molo, the now-famous'' food chain'', the work of Emmanuel Breton Chapalain.
In 2008/2009 is the same as Mario Ceroli to complete the work of the Church of San Lorenzo, with the creation of beautiful wooden bell tower, the portal crystal and of the impending stained glass window depicting the Deposition of Christ'''' dedicated by the artist the'' dead white.'' Finally, the south facade of the Church with the rose window entirely made in Murano.
Today PortoRotondo is one of the most important companies in the Mediterranean tourism during the summer season welcomes about 20,000 visitors, with peaks of 30,000 in August. The beautiful beaches are the crown to the region and its marina that offers a safe haven to over 650 boats of all sizes. The territory is divided into three "points": Punta Nuraghe, Punta Volpe, Punta Lada and welcomes hidden by lush Mediterranean apartments, residences and prestigious villas of prominent figures of culture, fashion, business and politics. The proximity to Olbia, just 15 km away, with its port and international airport has further boosted its development.
