Beautiful, rustic, well maintained 12th century medieval house in the vibrant village of Le Pouget in the stunning Languedoc region of southern France. Perfectly located to explore the region, Cloche-Piochet is a half hours drive from Montpellier, St Guilhelm le Desert, Sete, sandy beaches, and not much more than an hours drive from the Pont du Gard, Nimes historic colosseum, Carcassone and the Canal du Midi to name a few. French food at its best, local wines, beautiful villages nearby and very friendly locals will make your stay memorable.
As you enter Cloche-Piochet you will immediately be transported back in time as you peek into the ground floor 'cave' double bedroom before ascending the original medieval staircase to the light and airy first floor kitchen/living area with it's hundreds year old roman floor tiles and ancient stone walls. The kitchen is well equipped so you can cook up a storm with the irresistible local fresh produce, or heat up the plat du jour gourmet takeaway that the village butcher's wife cooks up each morning.
The old world ambience continues as you head upstairs to the second floor twin bedroom with its pretty little stain glass window and adjacent toilet and bathroom. Finally, what many of our guests over the years have called the 'view to die for' is at the top of the last small staircase. There, you'll walk through the attic bedroom that opens out onto the petit terrace that looks out over miles of surrounding villages, vineyards and beautiful french countryside. The terrace is a wonderful place to relax after a hard day's sightseeing with a cold glass of local wine, an array of gorgeous french cheese and whatever else takes your fancy. Watch the sun go down as you linger on for dinner, or head back out in the morning to enjoy your morning coffee and croissants still warm from the village patisserie.
People have lived at Le Pouget for at least 35,000 years and probably for much longer and the village as it stands today is of medieval origin. It is a classic hilltop circulade with houses on narrow cobbled streets circling a central church and churchyard. Today Le Pouget is a vibrant village of approximately a thousand friendly locals. It has a weekly market, two restaurants, a bar, two well stocked epicierie's, a butcher, baker, tabac and more.
Le Pouget is located close to the towns of Clermont l'Herault, Gignac and Pezenas bustling with their great weekly markets and variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. The nearby village of Canet (3km) provides access to the clear, cool waters of the Herault river and it's popular local swimming spot. Le Pouget is ideally located to explore the very scenic Herault valley, from its Mediterranean swimming beaches to its majestic mountains and many beautiful villages, valleys and vineyards in between.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The Languedoc has a long prehistory and history, and there are reminders of it everywhere. There are wonderful galleries, chateaux, restaurants, festivals and wineries and caves throughout the region, and scenery as spectacular and serene as anything you could wish for. The range of local attractions and activities are many and varied and well within easy travelling distance. Swim in the clear, cooling Herault river in the village of Canet 3kms away and visit the famous Pezanas market every Saturday. Spend a few hours exploring and shopping in the beautiful city of Montpellier (often referred to as the mini-Paris) and visit the historic towns of Carcassone and Nimes with its well preserved Roman colosseum which is still used for bullfights and concerts and nearby Pont Du Gard.

"comfortable medieval townhouse in wonderful Languedoc"
If you want a quiet escape from it all then this is the place. A lovely 4 storey 3 bedroon townhouse at the top of the old town of Le Pouget. The house is well equipped and comfortable with the bonus of stunning views from the roof terrace of the surrounding countryside and beyond (a great place to enjoy the local wine whilst watching the sun setting over the distant hills).
You will need to park the car in the surrounding streets at the base to the towns old circulade as the streets at the top are very narrow but this did not cause any problems.
Le Pouget and the nearby town of Canet have all the usual amenities whilst Clermont-l'Herault has many supermarches
The annual town festival at the end of August was very enjoyable with several evenings of music, food and wine.
It is a great base for exploring Languedoc with many places within easy reach:
Sete & beaches 45mins
Marseillan (home of Noilly Prat) 40mins
The whole region is full of fields of vines so plenty of opportunity to sample the excellent Languedoc wines.
I would definitely use this house again!

"A simply magical medieval place but with all the creature comforts of the twenty-first century."
We were met on arrival at the beautifully preserved medieval village of Le Pouget by the owners' very friendly and helpful agent. The house itself is far better than the photos could ever show, and the view out across the valley from the top-floor balcony, where we ate our evening meals, was just stunning. This is not a place for the physically infirm (lots of stairs) but for anyone else it offers the opportunity of a holiday filled with romance. The village itself is a quite and undiscovered, but situated close to the tourist attractions of St. Guilhem le Desert and the limestone caves of the Herault region. It is also a short drive to the Mediterranean and surrounded by vineyards, for those interested in sampling the wines of the Languedoc. Highly recommended!
