The Umbria region

There are many beautiful and fascinating places to visit within easy striking distance of La Selva.

Within an hour of La Selva there are a number of charming fortified cities in both Tuscany and Umbria, each worth exploring for their own unique character, intriguing history and art. Sansepolcro (Tuscany) and Citta di Castello (Umbria) lie to the North and are easily reached along the E45.

Gubbio, with its reputation for eccentricity, lies to the east; whilst Cortona (Tuscany) lies to the West. The routes to both have equally splendid views.

To the South, Lake Trasimeno is worth a visit - you can take a boat trip from the town of Tuoro to the Isola Maggiore (the large island). The capital of the province is Perugia, a glamorous city with fantastic gothic architecture and terrific designer shopping. South of Perugia, Deruta is worth a visit for those interested in ceramics (there are lots of shops to buy the distinctive pieces) and a little further on lies Montefalco, which is the centre of production of some of the finest wine in Italy - Sagrantino.

To the south east is Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis and St Clare. The Basilica of St Francis housing the tomb of the saint as well as fabulous frescoes is a place of pilgrimage for Christians and art-lovers alike.

A little further afield are the Tuscan cities of Arezzo and Siena; whilst Florence can be reached in about two hours. We recommend that for a trip to Florence, where parking and driving can be a nightmare, you drive to Camucia near Cortona and take the train - the service is reliable and Florence station is right in the city centre.

In southern Umbria, Todi is another charming hill town and Orvieto - home of the famous white wine - has one of the loveliest cathedrals in Italy. Spoleto in south eastern Umbria has amazing Roman ruins and a famous arts festival every summer.

Citta di Castello

The region has many celebrations throughout the year and there is always something going on, from gothic parades to mushroom festivals.

We have collected lots of information and suggestions of things to see and do which we have left at La Selva as well as copies of a number of English guide books. If you would like to buy your own, we can recommend the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet series, Cadogan guides (good focus on Umbria) or Dorling Kindersley (beautifully illustrated).

"FIreflies and Stargazing"

Casa La Selva is a place where you can really relax, unwind and enjoy the beautiful climate, scenery and food of this relatively untouristed part of Italy. The villa is large and spacious, with plenty of areas inside and out to enjoy - if you can drag yourself away from the pool. Perfect to book out for a large family get-together or share with a group of friends, we spent our days making sorties to the local markets, restaurants and sights of Tuscany and Umbria before re-grouping in the evening to enjoy drinks and home cooked meals on one of the terraces. As night fell we were accompanied by the magical sight of fireflies zipping through the trees and enjoyed the most amazing canopy of stars, free from light pollution. A true stargazers paradise. The small local town has excellent supermarkets with quality fresh produce and a good selection of local wines - all reasonably priced too. A bonus for those volunteering to do ‘the shop’ is the scenic drive down the hill side and a stop for expresso and gelato on the way back. Plenty of excellent restaurants to be found - our favourites were Nonna Gelsa in Umbertide and La Loggetta in Cortona. Perugia is also a great place to wander around and dine - especially if you time your visit for the Umbria Jazz festival in July. There are some good cycling routes for both on and off-roaders - just make sure you leave plenty of water and energy for the climb back up! Highly recommended whether you idea of fun is to be active and explore... or just to relax all day by the pool.

Thanks for your comments - beautifully put. You make us want to go there now!

"Idyllic Retreat"

This really is a wonderful gem of a place, set on a hill against fabulous views. The accommodation is flexible and very comfortably set up. All the indoor rooms are spacious, with plenty of room to expand and relax; really important with a larger group. The house boasts many indoor and outdoor eating areas, so you can follow the weather or find shade throughout the day; the roof terraces are particularly spectacular in the evenings. The kitchen is also nicely sized, a lovely 'social' space and amply equipped. The pool is well situated and a good size. It really does feel like everything has been thought of and, if you need anything, the local contact for the house is extremely helpful and friendly. Being on the Umbria/Tuscany border, it is well placed as a base to explore the attractions of the area, whether those known tourist spots or quiet, unspoilt countryside and villages. Eating out is easy too; information at the house can help with this. There are supermarkets in the local area for stocking up the larder and many of the local towns and villages have lovely markets with local produce. It really was a great place to use as a base for exploring the area, having fun by the pool or just relaxing; we found something for everyone!

We are so glad that you enjoyed La Selva as much as we do. Thank you for your comments.

"As good as it gets this side of heaven."

Aaaaah, bliss! So good I never go anywhere else now, La Selva is everything it promises to be - and much more. Locanda Nonna Gelsa's cooking is to die for. The location of the villa is absolutely tranquil, and the towns in the region provide everything expected of Tuscany/Umbria. I would recommend a holiday here to anyone - so long as they don't book when I want to go!

David, we are very pleased you enjoyed your stay at La Selva. Thanks for your review.
