La Grue
About the home
La Grue is a charming 19th century farmhouse with original beams and exposed stone work, beautifully renovated into a 3-bedroomed luxury self-contained Gîte. A private entrance with parking leads to your own front door and behind the gite there is a secluded garden and terrace, overlooking a wooded valley and in the distance Rochechouart. The views over the surrounding countryside from the back of the gite are fabulous all seasons of the year, with the rolling hills, fields, and woodland.
We are located in the heart of 'Le Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin', and are ideally situated to explore the varied and beautiful attractions of the Haute-Vienne, Dordogne and Charente departments. If you enjoy outdoor pursuits then you can fish, swim, cycle or meander around the beautiful lakes in the area. Golf is also available at 3 Golf courses nearby and there are many more attractions situated locally.

The Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Vienne region

The Haute Vienne (87) is the least industrialized region of France and it is famous for vast expanses of Chestnut and Oak forests, pleasant villages and large lakes. There is a wide range of outdoor activities and a diverse variety of wildlife in the area and the area has now been designated as part of France's newest Parc Regionale.
Whilst the area provides the perfect setting for a summer holiday it is also particularly beautiful in the spring and autumn, when the changing colours of the seasons are a photographers dream and the weather can be very pleasant for walking and cycling.
The capital of the Haute-Vienne is Limoges, this is a very attractive city famous for it’s porcelain. There are also 10 Castles in this department alone, museum of varying descriptions, archaeological sites, 8 major lakes and 2 theme parks.
The attractions of the other departments of Limousin, namely, Correze (19) and Creuse (23) are within easy reach as are neighbouring Charente (16) & The Dordogne (24).
The Cheronnac / La Grue area

A total of 26 chateaux of varying ages may be visited , all steeped in history.

The gite is large with plenty of room, there were 5 of us plus 1 dog. The rooms are very clean and well laid out and well stocked, the rear garden is very large with a seating area, chairs & table, 2 sun loungers and a BBQ (don't forget to ask for it as it is kept in a barn to keep dry...we forgot to ask and bought one). The very thick walls of the gite keep it very cool on hot days and there is a fire for when it is cold. We had the en-suit room which was very nice and the bathroom very large with a power shower (the water pressure is low though) our only complaint about the bedroom is that the bed was not the most comfortable, the pillows are very soft so if you like them harder I would bring your own. Our friends and their son had the other 2 rooms with a shared bathroom that could be locked on both sides which was a great idea. The other couple also found the pillows too soft but thier son slept fine every night. A car is a must as it is remote but lovely & quiet with amaizing walks from the front door, all big tourist attractions are a cars journey away though. Rochechouart is 10 mins away and is lovely, St. Junien is 25 mins away and has everything there, big hypermarkets, pretty streets and shops and a beautiful river. Our dog loved playing with one of the owners dogs which is a bonus if you are taking a dog and the garden is more than big enough for them. The owners Ron & Jackie are English and speak French, they live ajoined to the Gite which is a huge help if you need them. The only big problem we had with the gite was there was no WIFI which is advertised (we were told you could get it if you stand outside the front but we never did in 2 weeks) we had relied on the internet to look for things to do in the area but as we could not get on it, we had to rely on maps and info obtained before we traveled. We were give the code to connect from the owners but never did manage to get it connected, if you don't intend to use the internet then this is not a problem but otherwise print off all the things you want before you go and forget about Twitter & Facebook, lol. The gite is well worth the money as it is very large and well stocked. There was parking for both cars right outsid ethe front door too. You will need a car, but leave it behind somedays and walk the small roads that surround the Gite. Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay. |
