Moulin de la Ronde
Watermill | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 4
Moulin de la Ronde with its toes in the Vienne, occupies 4 acres of river frontage with a private island accessible through the mill, where you can fish, bird watch or just relax. Friends, visitors and locals describe it as stunning. La Ronde consists of the owners' cottage, the old watermill and two barns.
The last working mill in the Vienne, La Ronde was a demarcation line between free and occupied France in World War 2. It has over 600 years of history.
The "Old Grainstore" is the upper part of a barn which used to be linked by a footbridge to the mill. Now it is a very spacious, open plan apartment with parquet flooring, imposing original beams and imported furniture reflecting the owners time in Asia.
The local village of Bonnes is 5 mins walk away with a swimming pool, pharmacy, boulangerie,, bar/restaurant and a chateau!

We would like guests of the "Old Grainstore" to enjoy the entire property and all it has to offer. There is a gas fired "Outback" BBQ in the courtyard beside the "Old Grainstore" and a charcoal BBQ on the island.
Tables, chairs, recliners, hammock and benches are placed throughout the property so that the many lovely views can be enjoyed.
You share Moulin de la Ronde with swans, herons, ducks, kestrels, woodpeckers, kingfishers, house martins, bats, red squirrels, rabbits, pike, carp, barbel, chub, catfish, crayfish and ragoudin, and quite possibly others as well.
The English owners are normally on hand to help as much or as little as you wish during your stay.
Bread and wine will be on the table when you arrive with coffee, tea and milk in the kitchen.
Access to the upper floors of the mill is for owners only.
Locals bathe in the river. It is entirely at our guests own risk if they choose to do so.
The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
The Vienne is a region of rivers, lakes and forests gently undulating and easy on the eye with its own micro climate, generally dry and sunny. There are many historic towns and villages with vibrant local markets.
The area is known for Pineau de Charente, Poitou wines, biscuits, torteau du fromage, goats cheeses, lamb and its wildlife..
It is bordered by the beaches of La Rochelle to the west and the Loire to the north, both areas less than 2 hours away.
The local village of Bonnes is 5 mins walk away with a swimming pool, pharmacy, boulangerie, 2 bars, one the Cafe des Sports serves a 5 course lunch with wine included for 11 Euros (15 on sunday). Just outside the village is the beautiful Chateau Touffou which is open during the at weekends. There are well stocked fishing lakes at Bonnes and a licence can be obtained from the bars. It is a lovely area for walking, cycling and birdwatching.
10 mins away is Chauvigny with its busy markets, many shops, bars, restaurants, supermarkets and indoor pool. River canoeing trips can be booked, it's a unique way to view the river and its wildlife. Chauvigny's high medieval city, including five chateaux , offers spectacular displays of birds of prey, local museum and music during the summer months.
25 mins away is the historic city of Poitiers and the famous theme park-Futuroscope. Nearby is St Cyr with its lake, 'plan d'eau' and excellent golf course.
Saint Savin with its world heritage frescos, and Montmorillon -cite de l'ecrit- are 30 mins away.
For more birdwatching, the Brenne National park is 40 mins away driving through the famous village Angles sur Anglin on the way.
The WW2 memorial village of Oradour sur Glane is just 90 mins away and well worth the drive. It is as it was on the day the Nazis entered the village and murdered the entire population.

We had a perfect week at Moulin La Ronde. I don't think we've stayed in a more beautiful spot, in fact it was hard to tear ourselves away to explore the surrounding areas. However, it's … More

"A totally relaxing haven."
My husband and I had a fantastic holiday at the Old Grain Store. The accomodation is lovely - really spacious and the surrounding grounds are just idyllic. Over the fortnight we stayed I think we tried out every deckchair... Each one with its own lovely view of the river!
Brian and Gill made us feel really welcome, and gave us some great tips for places to visit and eat out.
We were really well situated to visit some great places, when we could tear ourselves away from the lovely surroundings of the gite!
The Old Grain Store is a great choice for a really relaxing

"Sheer bliss...such an idyllic spot and wonderful hosts"
This was our third trip to To the wonderful Moulin de la Ronde, and yet again we had a fantastic holiday. The setting is so picturesque and peaceful, and the location ideal for exploring beautiful local villages by car, foot or bicycle. The apartment is stylishly presented and huge (2 adults and 2 kids and plenty of room to spare). Brian and Gill are such welcoming and friendly hosts, happy to help out in any way they can and will gorge extra mile to ensure you have a lovely holiday.

The Grainstore provides beautiful and comfortable accommodation in a wonderful setting. The outside areas offer you a different place to relax each evening as you take in the wildlife and views of the river.
Brian and Gill are there to offer advice on the area as required, and kindly provided a chilli as the supermarkets don't stock them!

"Seriously lovely place"
Despite less than perfect weather, our stay at The Old Grainstore was great. The accommodation is ideal for a couple, quirkily kitted out, and with a very comfortable, enormous bed! The setting is absolutely beautiful, and Brian and Gill are the perfect hosts, both welcoming and hospitable.
The barbecue in the courtyard has converted us both to the convenience of gas - but we also used the charcoal barbecue on the island, which has more evening sunshine.
We found some wonderful walks and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the gardens. Our dog, Morse, who was kindly allowed to stay at the apartment, had a whale of a time, swimming in the river and becoming an expert on sniffing out deer, which we saw every day in the woods and fields.
The immediate area is very quiet - possibly too quiet for some - but Chauvigny is walkable, has plenty of bars and a nice atmosphere.
We enjoyed an incredibly relaxing holiday, which was just what we needed - if the sun had shone just a bit more, it would have been absolutely perfect!

"A True Gem, you must stay here"
My husband and i stayed in The Old Grainstore along with our 8 month old baby for 3 nights at the end of May. We had a lovely stay. This place is a true gem and if you are visiting this area, dont stay anywhere else. The decor of the Gite was fabulous and had absolutely everything you could want for your stay. The grounds are amazing and the location is perfect to explore the surrounding area. We were lucky to have Gill cook for us on one evening. The meal was fantastic and the setting was fabulous as we overlooked the river. Brian and Gill were great hosts and Gill left toys and baby equipment in the gite which was very much appreciated, especially by our little fellow. We would definitely stay here again and would recommend to anyone.

"Great place if you love the outdoors and wildlife"
Friendly welcome and the owners were available for any queries or local advice.
Fantastic location by the river Vienne with access to private frontage and island.
We thoroughly enjoyed birdwatching and just being by the river.
Accommodation is rather quirky and not very french! but clean and spacious - kitchen rather limited.
The use of bikes was a useful bonus. Canoe available in the summer .
Log fire was nice for cool evenings.
