Having personally spent many holidays in rented gites and villas, we have tried to provide as much as possible and to think of the small things that will make the experience more enjoyable, including provision of practical items such as a cool box, picnic rugs and beach towels for those trips out. There are also a number of board games, jigsaw puzzles and cards available incase of wet days.

There is a large tree at the boundary of the property providing welcome shade during those hot summer months and is an ideal place for having dinner whilst enjoying the views. The large, wellmaintained, external garden space is ideal for casual relaxation or for playing garden games-there is even a tent for clients use for children to have an exciting night outside!

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

Located on the border of the Limousin and Charente regions you get the best of both regions. Wonderfully warm during the summer months (with the second highest amount of sunshine after the south of France!). The climate is mild and temperate with wonderful rolling scenary.
There are many areas of interest in the close vicinity of the property including 2 large local activity lakes-Lake Lavaud has two lovely clean beaches, both perfect for swimming and during the summer months are manned by life guards. On one side of the lake, there is a watersports centre and you can hire pedalos, sailing dinghys, kayaks and windsurf boards There is also the opportunity to take part in other activities such as volley ball, crazy golf and table tennis as well as swim in a genuinely warm lake during the summer months. The lakes are approx 5 km from the barn.
The nearby adventure parc (similar to Go Ape! in the UK) is a must visit for the more adventurous. Canoeing and kayaking are available on the River Tardoire near Montbron and are enjoyable morning or afternoons fun.
The nearest city of Angouleme (the capital of Charente) is a wonderful place to visit with a beautiful cathedral and lovely shop and restaurants to enjoy. Angouleme is the comic strip capital of Europe and you can follow a walking route around the city looking out for a number of wall painted cartoons or visit the comic strip museum.
The Chabanais / Mouzon area
There are lots of wonderful towns and villages to see in the local area, most of which have great places to eat.
The Charente was an area where there was much French Resistance activity during the Second World War and is therefore home to a striking memorial open to visitors that sits high on the hillside above the nearby town of Chasseneuil.
The nearby towns of Rochechouart (in the Limousin region)and La Rochefoucauld have interesting chateaux as well as very pleasant town centres with nice shops and restaurants.
There are a number of local markets in the area including the large bustling wednesday market at Piegut Pluviers which is very worth a visit and you can purchase wonderful local specialities and souvenirs.
Further afield-the historic city of Bordeaux is easily reached by local rail from La Rochefoucauld and makes for a great day trip.
Also possible to easily visit other parts of the Charente including the famous city of Cognac and further afield to La Rochelle and Royan where you can spend the day by the sea (approx 2hours drive).
There is also an exciting theme parc (which has been highly recommended by previous visitors) called Futuroscope in Poitiers (approx 1 hours drive). Another popular local activity is the velo rail (pedal powered bicycle/rail cart) which can provide good fun for all the family as well as plenty of exercise and is based at the nearby town of Roumazieres.
Some of the prettiest villages and towns in France can also be visited easily for a nice day out and include; Brantome, Aubeterre sur Dronne, Villebois Lavalette and Perigueux. There is extensive information and maps of the area available at the property for all our guests.
The local and informative tourist information centre is in the nearby village of Massignac and the staff are more than happy to help with any requests for information or advice.

Arrived at The Barn after a short flight from the UK to Limoge and only a 40 minute car journey to The Barn. We arrived at The Barn in beautiful sunshine, The Barn is breathtaking, it is so light and airy with more space than you can imagine. Comfortable sofas surround a log burner with views out on to the grounds. The kitchen was very well equipped, and the bedrooms all wonderfully decorated and comfortable. There were 3 bathrooms to choose from, one ensuite and two family bathrooms. The grounds are lawned and private only being overlooked by a field of friendly cows. Overall the Barn was well located for travelling and exploring parts of rural France. We would have no hesitation in returning to discover more of this beautiful countryside and staying in this fabulous Barn. The owners should be congratulated on such a stunning property. |
