About the home

Set in 6 acres of beautiful French countryside, our peaceful gite with all amenities is the ideal base to explore the surrounding areas or fish in our own private spring fed 2.5 acre lake. The lake contains carp up to 30lb, roach, perch and sunfish. There is an enclosed childrens play area with swings, slides, badminton net and rackets. There is also an above ground circular swimming pool. We are in a quiet and peaceful village, yet only 10 minutes to the town of Chabanais with all amenities.

There is lots to do and see including, river canoeing, golfing, leisure lakes, amusement parks, chateaus and lots of photographic opportunities.

The ground floor has a large open plan kitchen/diner and there is a separate lounge with satellite TV & PS2. The 1st floor has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with 2 singles and a bathroom with shower/bath & wc. There is a small enclosed garden with patio furniture but you have full use of the grounds and woodland where you will see red squirrels, various birds and even deer. The owners property is on site.

If you want to get away and relax but do not drive, at an extra cost we can arrange airport transfers (Limoges airport), a trip to the supermarket and and an excursion.

Time of arrival is after 4.00pm and time of departure at the end of the holiday is 10.00am.

Conditions

A £100 deposit is payable on booking and the balance due 6 weeks before the start of the holiday.

A refundable breakages deposit of £100 is required at the start of holiday, this will be refunded within 2 weeks upon property inspection.

Please note that children should always have adult supervision around the lake and pool.

As we have chickens and ducks roaming around, only well behaved dogs are allowed.

Smoking is only permitted outside of the property.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

The Charente is situated on the borders of the Limousin and the Dordogne. Temperature wise it is reputed to be the second sunniest climate in France.

The large city of Limoges, which is famous for its porcelain, is approximately 50 mins away.

The medieval town of Cognac, famed for it's brandy, is approx. 1 hour away.

Bordeaux, famed for it's wine, is approx. 2hrs away.

The Chabanais / Chirac area

We are in the small sleepy village of Chirac. A short stroll into the village will bring you to the lovely old church of Saint-Pierre.

Chez Toi bar/restaurant is in Exideuil which is approx 5 minute drive away.

We are 10 mins away from the town of Chabanais which has the river Vienne running through it. The town has all amenities, i.e. supermarket, dr's, pharmacy, restaurants, post office, etc.

The medieval town of Confolens is approx 20 mins away and is famed for its folk festival in August where artists from around the world come to perform in the towns cobbled streets.

Calling all vintage and classic car lovers - The Circuit des Remparts is held in Angouleme (approx 50 mins away) in September where vintage and classic cars are shown then raced.

There are lots to do and see for all ages, here are just a few:

A canoeing centre where you can canoe along the river Vienne
River fishing nearby on the Vienne
golfing
leisure/amusement parks, including La Vallee des Singes (a monkey park where monkeys roam freely)
leisure lakes
Velo rail (where you sit in carriages and pedal along the disused rail tracks)
Chateaus
The memorial village of Oradour Sur Glane which the Germans destroyed on 10 June 1944 during the war

Limoges Airport, which is approx 40 mins away, is the nearest and best served airport. It has direct flights from London Stansted, Bristol, East Midlands, Leeds & Liverpool - all Ryan Air . Flybe has direct flights from Newcastle and Southampton . During the summer months Flybe operate from Gatwick to Limoges. Poitiers Airport, approx 90 mins away, is served by Ryan Air from Edinburgh and Stansted and the airports at La Rochelle and Bordeaux also have a variety of flights from UK - the drive is about 2 hours from both of them.

You can catch a ferry to either Le Harvre or Caen and the drive is approx 6 hours, or approx. eight hours from Eurotunnel and the ferry at Calais.

“Peace and quiet in beautiful French countryside.” From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome. Dean and Veena are very pleasant hosts who are very helpful at all times. The property is lovely and the welcome each morning from the ducks and chickens is a pleasant way to start the day. I fished the lake most evenings and managed to catch many fish up to 29lb in weight. The lake is a lovely place to spend some quiet time watching the wildlife. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is a lovely area that I would recommend people to visit. Thanks again.

“Simply the Best” We stayed at Acorn Lake for 5 days in May 2012. The gite was very comfortable and had everything you needed for a self catering holiday in France. Dean and Veena couldn't do enough for us to make our stay so memorable, they are both very friendly and hospitable. The gardens around the gite are beautiful with chickens ducks and baby lambs walking around freely. The fishing lake was the highlight for my husband having caught several fish. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Acorn Lake to anyone who wished to holiday in this beautiful part of France. Simply the Best - 10/10

“Friendly hosts, comfortable and with Total peace & quiet, with fantastic fishing on site.” My Wife and I totally enjoyed our stay, and could have stayed longer, the place was idealic, quiet and peaceful but within easy travelling distance of places to visit and things to see. The gite has everything that you need for a relaxing vacation, also there are lovely walks in the grounds and great fishing if, like me, you are into angling. all that is left to say is a big thankyou to Dean & Veena for a well needed, & relaxing vacation.
