The Puglia region
Puglia is located in the "heel of Italy's boot" in the sunny southern section of the country. It has a unique character and charm that hasn't been spoiled by hordes of tourists. The bright blue seas, golden sands, and olive groves make up this breathtaking and unspoilt region of Italy that is as of yet mostly undiscovered by outsiders.
Salento is like no other place in Italy. The little towns on the coast seem like old-fashioned seaside paradises, each with its unique culture and history. Yes, it's Italy, but it also seems to be a bit of Greece, Turkey and what the Salentini call "Porta d'Oriente".
Two minuts driving from the Salento Stone Cottage the city of Castro, divided into an upper part (town) and a lower part by the sea (marina). Nowadays the lovely tourist resort of Castro Marina is one of the prettiest and most popular of all Salento peninsula. Lovely restaurants, fresh fish and great food are accompanied by small rocky caves and pebbly beaches, castles and scenic buildings. Castro Marina is also an ideal point to start interesting organized boat trips and excursions. Just a few km from Castro Marina Zinzulusa's Caves are a must not to be missed. These caves by the sea, accessed through a coastal path from which some of the clearest waters all over the world can be seen, are famous for their particular natural environment, that give a house to several (protected) prehistorical shrimps that remained hidden during the centuries in the most remote areas of the caves and preserved their ancient characteristic as they never had any contacts with the world outside. Just outside the caves a bar, restaurant and a pool by the sea can be found for some relaxation during the hottest days of the summer
About 15 minuts driving from the Salento Stone Cottage the beautiful Otranto, the easternmost Italian town, a lovely tourist centre built around its castle and cathedral. The centre of Otranto, with small pedestrian lanes and stone houses is a lovely place for a stroll. Traditional restaurants and shops selling every kinds of goods can turn a day or night excursion into a delight. Not to be forgotten the sandy beaches that stretch from Otranto going north (such as Alimini Lakes' beaches - in a protected ecological area).
About 50 minuts driving from the Salento Stone Cottage the wonderful Lecce, the main city of Salento peninsula, also known as the Baroccan Florence of the south. Its architecture, virtually unique in Italy, makes Lecce an important cultural and tourist destination. Lecce is the easternmost big Italian city, and lies in the heart of Salento, being 11km from the adriatic coast and 23 km from the ionic coast. The history of Lecce is said to start during the Roman era, and since then the importance of this city has grown to today's level, passing through middle ages and the Baroccan era. A walk around Lecce is a true delight: everywhere can be seen architectural elements unique in the world, made in typical Baroccan style using local white sandstone.

We spent a splendid time in this marvellous and spacious house with a charming garden very close to the see. The view on the terrace is beautiful. Elisabetta had prepared for us a basket with food and drinkings : olive oil, fruit, coffee, tea, cookies, beers... And we enjoyed the very beautiful area, there is much to visit and discover... and the see of course is sublime... This is really a very, very good address.

"Lovely home, beautiful area"
We had a wonderful time at Salento Stone Cottage. Elisabetta and Pierrangelo were really lovely and incredibly helpful - from giving us a great tour of Lecce to examining my husband's ear to see if he had an infection (Pierrangelo is a Dr) to arranging with a local hotel for us to use wifi. The house is very well equipped -- even with sharp knives!! -- from beach towels to plenty of cooking equipment. The welcome basket was delicious and incredibly useful (the strawberry jam and olive oil were amazing). The beaches are incredible -- crystal clear water and plenty of coastline to find uncrowded beaches (mostly rocky coves nearby). We found a few restaurants in the area that were quite good and not touristy. In all, a wonderful, relaxing holiday. Thank you so much Elisabetta and Pierrangelo!!

"A fantastic stay"
We had a fastastic stay in Elisabetta and Pierangelo's cottage at Acquaviva near Castro. The cottage is exactly as described. Beautiful walled in garden plus large terrace overlooking the sea, perfect places for having breakfast, a chat or just for chilling out. Elisabetta's recycling skill has made the whole place very very special: wooden pallets have been turned into bedheads, cable spools into garden tables, an old ladder in one of the bedrooms can be used to hang up clothes and everywher are wicker baskets of all sizes. One in the main kitchen was full of yummy delicatessen from Elisabetta! Beds are very comfortable, living room spacious and shady, the studio upstairs very stylish and with an unforgettable view. Both kitchens are fully equipped but we used just one, mainly for making breakfast, as our hosts, as well as many friendly locals, recommended excellent restaurants and agriturismi. Casa mia and La Locanda del Levante in Tricase, Aria Corte in Marittima, Agriturismo L'Aia in Vignacastrisi and the bakery Protopapa should not be missed! The location is also perfect for making coastal and interior day trips. Galatina, Otranto, Gallipoli, Nardò, the ecletic villas between S.Caterina and Cenate, Specchia (the best ricotta ice-cream I've ever had!), Scorrano with its astonishing dance of millions of colourful lights when the patron saint is celebrated, are all musts. All in all, Elisabetta and Pierangelo, friendly, generous and helpful at any time, their cottage and Salento with its people exceeded our expectations and we highly recommend this house to others. Grazie Elisabetta and Pierangelo for pampering us with a successful combination of Florentine and Salentinian warmth Miriam, Guido, Irene, Mariella and Davide
