Home description
Stroll around the ancient village of Carate Urio on the west shore of Lake Como. Narrow stepped pathways and romantic footbridges link the characteristically old lake villas to the shore. Carate Urio is an ancient, small village with a handful of café-bars or restaurants where you are guaranteed a warm welcome, great coffee, quaffable wine and of course fantastic food!
The home itself is a beautifully decorated and luxurious holiday hideaway. Currently two** bedrooms, two bathrooms (1 of which is en suite) plus a spacious private garden make this home the perfect Lake Como retreat. The two double or twin bedrooms each have a zip and link bed (king size when linked and two generous singles when apart). From early 2010 there will also be a third fun bedroom with bunkbeds and its very own porthole window - ideal for children.
The sun room or "look out", situated on the first floor is a quiet spot where you can relax with a book or a glass of prosecco and watch the amazing sunsets over the lake, it’s also a great spot for meeting for drinks before dinner. The large sitting room has a beautifully restored antique floor and is the perfect party room to get your family or friends together and enjoy some of the games we all enjoy playing when we are on holiday. Cook and eat indoors in the modern dining kitchen or go outdoors. Here there is a barbecue for outdoor cooking and an old stone table for al fresco dining. This all sits underneath a wrought iron gazebo that is covered from spring to autumn with greenery and lilacs – offering welcome shade from the sun.
Carate Urio is ideally situated to explore some of the hot spots of the lake by ferry, like the famous Villa d’este or Harry’s Bar in Cernobbio where you might sip a cocktail in celebrity company. Good road and rail links make art & culture trips to Milan, Bergamo, Verona and Venice fast and easy.

CANTINA (converted wine cellar)
A staircase leads from the garden level (where the dining kitchen, master bedroom and bathroom are) to the converted wine cellar, which is above ground. It has a vaulted ceiling and a porthole window with views to the lake and the mountains. Although when it comes available early in 2010 it will be the smallest by far, of the three bedrooms, this room will be decorated and furnished with kids in mind. It will be a fun room (sleeping two) that kids - and big kids – will love. It has a wardrobe, a chest of drawers and bunk beds.
"The Look Out"
With windows all round, which open inwards to let lots of fresh air in, the `Look Out’ is a great spot to sit quietly and relax with a book or a glass of prosecco and watch the amazing sunsets over the lake. A great spot for meeting for drinks before dinner.

There are great views across the gardens to the lake and this room has a private bathroom.
Bathroom
En-suite to the double bedroom on the upper level there is a great size shower, sink, WC and bidet. Although it is the only room in the house without lake views there is a fan shaped window giving lots of natural light.

Guestbook for Villa Casa Fontana
Hi Barrie
It was really nice to meet you both, we enjoyed our evening last Friday and loved the wine bar we were in.
I absolutely loved all of the places we visited around Lake Como and Villa Casa Fontana was first class . We loved the modern mixed with all of the charm of an Italian home, the terrace was just a fantastic private place to enjoy the outdoors, take in the view and eat and chat until late in the evening (which we did).
We had a really nice relaxing time visiting the absolutely delightful villages, shopping in the many different types of little shops, sailing and as ever lunching in some of the charming restaurants.
All of the views around the lake are stunning, however, you would find it hard to get better views of the lake than from the house, the views from all of the rooms are amazing and really different morning, noon and night, I will always treasure the memories. I have some fantastic photographs and I intend to have some enlarged and framed for my own home.
Hopefully I will return very soon to visit some of the places I missed on this trip and to go back to many of the places we were at.
Send my regards to Julie, and look forward to meeting you both again should you decide to visit Scotland.
Kind regards
Theresa Penman (Scotland) October 2009
We rented the Villa Casa Fontana in early September this year and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property has been very tastefully updated and renovated internally to make the best of the great views of the lake from the main rooms, especially from the very pleasant and airy ‘look out’. The property is well supplied for all your needs if you are going to be spending a lot of time and making full use of Villa Casa Fontana for relaxation.
Villa Casa Fontana and the area of Carate Urio though are also ideally situated for touring Lake Como and its environs. We particularly enjoyed using the ferries, which was a completely stress-free way to explore the lake and the surrounding towns. The ferry can be boarded from the little pier across from Hotel Orso Bruno and sticks to a rigid timetable. Heading north the scenery is stunning and a visit to the lakeside towns of Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna are essential.
Villa Casa Fontana has the choice of excellent eating places locally and within walking distance in Carate Urio. There was very good locally caught seafood from the restaurant connected to the Hotel Orso Bruno. We also enjoyed the food in Ristorante Fioroni and Ristorante San Bernardo does very good pizzas.
From when you lift your head off the pillow in the morning and glimpse the eastern shore, until you dine al fresco late in the evening on the garden terrace and retire to the ‘look out’ with a digestivo, Lake Como dominates and captivates from Villa Casa Fontana. Dougie, UK..Sept 2009.
