"An Oasis of Luxury in Beautiful Eastern Bali"
I would recommend Villa Surya to anyone, particularly those with a bit more time on their hands (i.e., more than a weekend) and a desire for more than the resort beaches of Kuta and Sanur have to offe… More
As guests we give you 6 stars.
It was a real pleasure for all of us to meet and greet you and your lovely family. Most kids you see nowadays are stuck in front of a flatscreen of some sort and it was so good to see the kids really adventure around the villa meeting all the people and creatures of Bali and just have a wonderful time from sun up (they got up before the sun did most mornings!) until sundown with breaks for sightseeing, swimming and well earned naps in between. We had to revise down our ideas that travel is only meaningful for children approaching teenage because of them.
You and your wife braved the roads of Bali in a rental and had a good experience and the freedom to go and do whatever your desires dictated. It was wise to occasionally take Made our driver for the longer trips to save up your energies for the kids and that all important sightseeing. The balance was correct.
Please come and see us again when the civets have grown and are running free.

"Authentic Bali Experience"
Villa Surya is for those travellers who want to experience Balinese life whilst being pampered by the staff and owner. This secluded property is set amongst Balinese going about their daily life which you can observe from the comfort of the Villa or if so inclined talk the the rice farmers, villagers, school kids and other locals who use the quiet track adjacent to the Villa.
The staff are friendly and efficient and if the owner Mark is in Bali during your stay he will provide a mine of information to make your stay enjoyable.
As a frequent visitor to Bali this was one of our most enjoable holidays and we will return.
It was lovely to meet you both and we look forward to your return. "Baby tuna" is still in abundance and fresh every day. Next time lets do the Babi Guling (suckling pig)feast. Alit, Kadek, Ketut and I all say Hi and many thanks for your lovely review.

"Wonderful Villa in Quiet Location"
We have just returned from a wonderful two weeks in Bali, the first week of which was spent at Villa Surya. What a great experience, we had the holiday of a lifetime due in no small part to the staff … More
You were a lovely group and it was a great experience for us all - you allowed us to share in the joy of your reunion and the pleasure you all got from seeing the intimate side of Bali (yes, cremations are very interesting and dare I say it, they can and should be fun).
Don't get me wrong Kuta, Sanur, Legian and Nusa Dua, the more touristy places here on the island are great for those that are just looking for "fun in the sun" but it's very rewarding for us to find a group that are willing to embrace the entire Bali experience from climbing Agung in the middle of the night to catch the sunrise to wonderfully long massages on the beautiful White Sandy Beach or in the privacy of the villa - they kind of go together, don't they? Glad you enjoyed the grub too - Ketut was impressed with your ability to handle (and even ask for more) spicy Balinese sauces.
Ketut, Alit, Kadek and I all wish you the very best (Cheech and Chong the cats too!)and hope to see you all again soon. Oh and thanks for the great review.
We've just added 2 more bedrooms in a separate guest house on the property along with an extra swimmingpool too so next time you can bring the grandkids...?

"A tribute to the people of Villa Surya"
We are Dutch and for some perhaps double Dutch but this is our review.
A tribute to the people of Villa Surya.
Master of the kitchen Ketut always taking care.
Alit the man behind the screen and his lovely wife Kadek.
Wayan the silence power in dark hours.
But also Meggy our driver guide and friend.
And the husband of Ketut, Wayan the silent force.
But that all, you have to discover yourselves.
What can we say in words about feelings?
People being closed in our hearts for ever because we felt the love from the heart.
Being on top of a volcano with family and friend going even further than expected.
As Christians being part of a Hindu celebration blessed without question and feeling proud of it.
Invited to a new house ceremony and feel very special.
Celebrate you birthday like you never had before, unable to describe the overwhelming feeling of pleasing.
What can we tell you our eyes have seen?
Children dancing with grace, never thought it was possible.
Fishing on a small boat with a local, speaking no Balinese nor English, and see the sun coming up.
A friendship fire in the backyard every evening and the palms and stars above you.
Four real Balibulle people not being laugh at but laugh with in the temple of temples.
Green rice terraces being ploughed by oks.
A beautiful house better than a picture can tell and the great views.
How can we let you taste the taste and smell the smells?
Of every day homemade fresh sambal.
Real home killed pig and chicken without spoiling anything.
The local cow marked and the real arak.
The incense of offering the Gods and the Balikoffie.
The real local food of peppers, garlic, unions, pork, chicken, soup and noodles.
Can you imagine our ears heard?
The friendly inviting to come to eat by people you don't now.
The monotone chaka singing of man never heard before.
Tokeeeee, Tokkee, Toke, toke and the footsteps of our guardian angel.
The rhythm of music made by bamboo and bells and the sound of falling water.
The sound of the see and his breeze.
All this in three weeks and so much more to discover, so much more to tell to each other!
And at last to the proud owner Mark. Chute up you big mouth we now your hart is a 1000 times bigger!
If you don't understand the things above, dare to discover it all.
It's worth it!
You and your family seemed to love their time here on Bali and the kids are of an age when they really got something out of the fantastic cultural and natural experiences that are all around us here in Paradise Bali. Thanks for sharing your artistic and ship knowledge with us and the decorations to the new Villa Candra will take your suggested form - Bamboo. You are all welcome back anytime.

"one week in paradise"
Living in the Villa Surya for one week was just like what I would picture a week in paradise. The beds were amazing! I have never slept that well ever again. After taking a swim in the gorgeous pool every morning Kutut, the Villa's own chef, made us a delicious breakfast! The lunch and dinner that Kutut also prepared every day were just a dream come true! Whenever we were curious about the traditional dishes she was happy to show us how they were prepared and taught us her recipes, which added to the authentic Balinese experience of staying in the Villa. Alit, who also works in the Villa, was very friendly and always happy to offer his help! What I also loved about the Villa Surya was its great location! While it is just a short walk from one of Bali's black beaches, it is also just a short drive to impressive Balinese temples. The Villa Surya is just a perfect place to come to and relax in an authentic balinese atmosphere! I was very sad to leave and can't wait to go back!
So great to hear from you again and many thanks for the fantastic review. We really enjoyed having you and the others and please stop in again and spend some more time in Paradise.
Your private Yoga lessons were the start of a great trend here at Villa Surya - we now have most of our guests taking part and just loving the intimacy that Kawi brings to the expercises.
Hope you are all well and looking forward to your next trip.
Mark, Kadek, Ketut and Alit all say "Om Swastiastu" (may your gods be with you)

We are all so grateful for your kind words of praise. It was lovely to meet you, your partner and the two lovely little girls.
Some people come to Bali looking for peace and relaxation, some want adventure and partying, others are looking for cultural discoveries or just plain love (Eat, Pray, etc.).
You guys got it all!
And if I could just bottle what you brought I would pass it out to every guest that we have.
Helping you and your family to make each day of your stay special and filled with new and wonderful experiences is one of the most rewarding things we have ever done.
It was pure pleasure seeing the kids try their best to imitate Ketut's professional weaving of the day's offerings or helping in the kitchen and learning some Balinese cooking arts.
You enjoyed the help and instruction of our private Yoga teacher as your partner was running up and down Mount Agung.
There's still lots more to do so please come and visit us again - Alit, Ketut, Kadek and I say "Om Swastiastu".

"Good but need transport"
Great place but a bit isolated....you would do best to have a car or motorbikes if you choose to stay here or you will need to pre plan everything you do with the staff and drivers....not so spontaneo… More
Villa Surya is off the beaten track - for tourists, and frankly that is something we are quite proud of. If you want to be surrounded by Germans, French or Americans (and we love them too!) we suggest you go to those countries - I'm told there are many of them there. Villa Surya is in the heart of the rural Balinese village of Jasri a suburb of Amlapura whose town market is 2 minutes away, the Water Palace at Ujung is 5, Candi Dasa is 8 minutes by car and for the majority of our guests they love this immersion in the Balinese environment - transport is necessary, but it's also necessary when staying in Manhattan. If you don't want to use transport you are welcome to walk, bicycle or possibly choose the resort option - we are a private luxury villa.
Frankly I'm baffled by the "no seating area" complaint - there is a large roofed and lighted Bale or Gazebo (pictured on the add) with 4 large bean bags and a coffee table next to the pool and also further covered seating under the (2m x 4m) roof by the living room entrance with 2 outdoor recliners and a coffee table. In all honestly I think that the rain was probably the real problem with their stay (during the rainy season!), not the facilities.
All food is best fresh and Balinese particularly but we naturally also keep a supply of frozen fries, chicken nuggets, sausages, etc on hand for those that prefer food from home. Now if our guests only order things that we have frozen it would be foolish to rush off to buy them again. We encourage our guests to be adventurous and try the vast range of fresh cuisine, be it fresh fish, pork or Indonesian vegetables and specialities on daily offer at local markets but none of our guests will be forced to be "adventurous" at Villa Surya.
I turned up at the wrong time - well, in my humble defence I would like to say that the only "average" review that we have had so far was highlighted by the statement that I was only interested in the money and didn't come by once - with me being in the UK at the time a quick visit was not possible, but I do like money...
When I am on Bali I do come by regularly to check with the guests, their wellbeing and comfort and also to advise on things to do, what to be careful of, etc, etc and all of our guests so far seemed to be happy and glad of the advice, help and care offered. I guess it is not possible to make something correct for all people - there will always be chalk and cheese. When on Bali I will continue to turn up on occasion and help out - if you don't want me there please just say and I'll hang out at the beach instead...:O) I will not be offended - promise!
With this being our first year in business we expect to make mistakes and also to learn from them. So please come back and give us a(nother) chance - when it's not raining?

"Missed the mark...."
The villa itself is a lovely property. We found the pool, however, to be dirty. I went so far as to test the water myself and look at the filtration system. It is a modern system, but, for some reason, the water was always out of balance and murky. It was a major disappointment because the beach is neither swimmable or walkable. From the terrance, one can see the ocean, but I would not describe the place as having an "ocean view".
Also, the grounds were not well kept, except for the area immediately surrounding the pool. The opposite side of the house was unkempt with plants growing wild and what looked to be a space for a garden. The saddest frangipani tree I have ever seen was planted near the pool. No leaves and some flowers. It seemed to be struggling for life in what is a tropical paradise.
I will concede that the house staff was excellent, responded to our requests promptly, and made excellent meals. We really like them. We did not, however, like the driver (Made) as we caught him in a couple of lies about small things and he often pushed to leave places earlier than agreed. It was annoying.
Unless you want to hang at the house, you have to drive some distance to see places. Thus, if you want to see Bali, then I would select another villa. I am sure the pool problem can be cleared up and, if it is, it would be a perfect place to relax by the pool with a good book.
Final comment, we asked that the owner of this property be contacted regarding our concerns about the pool. Mark, the owner, never contacted us. Once we paid, his interest in us vanished quickly. We did not appreciate his lack of attention.
Many thanks for your somewhat subjective review, if nothing else it goes to prove the honesty of this entire review system.
May we say your stay with us has become the stuff of local legend due in part to your immediate stress testing of the entire villa's electrical system. 5 minutes after arrival you had already turned on every light (including the pool's in the middle of the day!) and with the final edition of the hair dryer(s) the safety in the junction box finally popped. Not satisfied with one "successful" attempt to fox the electrical supply you then repeated it - again "successfully".
Our good driver Made was brought to the edge of madness by up to 3 trips to Kuta daily (round trip time 4 hours) where members of your party became lost overnight and previously ordered and prepared dinners where ignored and forgotten. Upon finally leaving our humble abode for your next destination, guess where... Kuta, you immediately called Made while he was still in return transit and demanded that he return and pick your party up again as you were unhappy with your new accommodation - he respectfully declined.
As to the pool - that was just simple bad luck. Just prior to your visit Bali had had a week of terrible weather with torrential rains and the first actual tornado in Denpasar in living memory. Of course the pool was full of leaves (from our poor frangipani) and much debris had been washed into the pool also. This was all removed as quickly as it was possible to do within the time of your stay.
All of our guests are furnished with our personal telephone numbers (and it is also displayed on the advertisement) for use in any situation that they feel warrants calling us but we received no such call from you and also not from our staff who learned felt that us being in the UK meant we could not do much about leaves in the pool, although we would have welcomed the chance to talk with you about your issues and have now advised our staff to always inform us when any guest seems unhappy or has an issue which is unresolved.
As to our grounds: As stated in the advertisement the villa is placed in the middle of a coconut palm orchard and the local community values very highly the produce of these trees, which we donate freely. As with all trees things like leaves and fruit fall out of them occasionally and therefore we have decided to keep half of the area as producing trees and for the other half that surrounds the villa the trees are cleaned and all nuts and old leaves are removed on a bi-weekly rota. This is a safety measure to protect our guests. Therefore we actively discourage anyone spending much time in the "productive" section of our gardens - but it is still lovely to look at and is a major part of the tropic idyll that is Bali and we are sorry this went unappreciated.
All in all it seems a pity that you had such a poor experience with us and Bali but we hope that in retrospect you may reconsider and give Bali and perhaps us another chance - Made will pick you up, promise!
