The Central Hungary/Danube region

Hungary lies in central Europe and the River Danube runs north-south through the centre of the country. It shares its borders with seven countries: Austria to the west, Slovakia to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the east, and Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia to the south. Budapest is in the centre-north of the region and is the perfect base from which to explore the region and the country.
Only a short drive away are a host of other attractions, including Lake Balaton for swimming and boating, the Danube bend and beautiful old towns like Szentendre and Székesfehérvar. Whatever your interests central Hungary has so much to offer.
The Budapest / District 12 area
Budapest, with its wide avenues, art nouveau style and streetside cafes is reminiscent of Paris. It is in fact two cities, Buda with its castle, and Pest. These sit astride the great River Danube. There is a wealth of activities on offer. Take your choice:
Sights to see:
The Castle District; this is the jewel of Buda. Take the cable car up to it and visit the Royal Palace and exquisite St Mathias Church. Enjoy panoramic views across to Pest and then wander down the narrow cobbled streets past old listed buildings.
Pest old town
Andrássy út (the Champs Élysées of Budapest)
The Chain Bridge
Margaret Island in the Danube: perfect for strolling, swimming pools and bike hire etc
St Stephen's Basilica
The splendid neo-classical Central Market (Buy almost anything here!)
Wonderful Museums like the National Museum, National Gallery and Museum of Fine Arts;
To name just a few.
Thermal Spas: Hungary is famous for these, some in beautiful architectural settings. Spend a lazy day in the famous Széchenyi or Gellért and feel those aches and pains ease away.
Cafes and Restaurants: Hungarians love to sit and talk over coffee and cakes (tea too!). And so must you if you are to get the feel of this city! Experience spicy Hungarian cuisine at a restaurant by the Danube at night with the castle lit up high on the far bank, and be serenaded by gypsy fiddlers at your table.
Excursions
The Budapest Hills: to see these and get a spectacular view of Budapest you can take either the Cogwheel Railway, or the Chairlift up to János Hill (Budapest's highest point), or the Children's Railway (run largely by children!) which climbs up into the hills.
Boat excursions on the Danube leave daily
Lake Balaton: the largest lake in central Europe and ideal for swimming and boating
Székesfehérvar: the ancient capital of Hungary
The Danube Bend: drive north out of Budapest with the Danube on your right side and misty forested hills rising up on the other
Szentendre: a beautifully preserved little town on the Danube half an hour north of Budapest.

Guestbook for Orchardviews studio flat
We came to Budapest for dental treatment and a holiday. The studio was just what we needed, very quiet and green with our own patio and so convenient for the centre of town.
We'll come again one day.
Thanks
