Enquire nowThe Lombardy / Lake Como Area region
Lake Como lies wholly in the region of Lombardy, which occupies the Po Plain and is a somewhat varied region whithin whose vast confinement we find areas of flat land, mighty peaks, gentle undulating hills, enchanting lakes and numerous revers.
Thanks to its rich natural heritage, Lombardy has undergone extensive economic development throughout the centuries, first as an agricultural region then as a highly developped- industrial area. The many towns, scattered over the countryside, were important banking and trading centres in Medioeval and Renaissance times and spread the name of the Lombard?s all ove Europe.
Cypresses, pines and palm trees grow along the shores of Lake Como , laurel on the rocks, vines, olives and lemons on the sunny slopes.
Flowers start blooming in March with daffondils and lily-of-the-valley. The higlight in April and May are the spectacular colours of azaleas, rhododendros and camellias. Roses, oleander and hydrangeas bloom from June to September. The beauty of the parks and gardens are enhaced by magnificent warm autumn colours from the end of September and for the whole of October.
The luxuriance of plant and flowers is favoured by a temperate and mild climate. The averange winter-temperature does not fall below 6-7°C, while the summer-temperature does not exceed 25-30°C which are mitigated in the afternoon by a light breeze, typical of Lake Como.
The local cuisine is based on many typical dishes of Lake area and the surrouding region.
The Como area is famous for its ancient tradition of its silk industry: don't forget to visit the famous Silk Museum in Como.
Summer evening entertainment offers in every village musical concerts, choral and instrumental performances both open-air or in characteristic buildings or churches. Various folk festivals and daily musical entertainment in bars, cafès and restaurants.
The Bellagio / Lezzeno area
Lezzeno is a nice village on the shores of Lake Como, on the way from Como to Bellagio( 5 kms. from Bellagio). With its many hamlets scattered along the shore of the Lake and at the foot of the mountains, Lezzeno is also a renowned residential centre. At the end of the village, on the last stretch of road before Bellagio, you can see the "Sassi Grosgalli". These are scenic cliffs that jut out over the lake and they are full of crevices caused by the erosion of the waters.
We know that the area was already inhabited in Roman times from a fragment of a tombstone slab in tha wall of the parish bell tower with an inscription from the 1st-2nd century A.D.
The church of S.Quirico and S.Giulitta was built in the 16th century but was subsequently renovated, Oratorio della Madonna dei Ceppi dates back to the 14th century.
Antica Strada Regia: before the main road was built this path connected Como to Bellagio. Restored last year, the path is clean and well maintained with lots of signs to show the way. Wonderful views can be enjoied from here.
Lezzeno is also an important centre of craftsmanship. Iron wire and metal nets are produced here and it also has shipyards.
To shop for groceries and consumables, there are several small grocers, fruit stores and butchers along Lezzeno's main road. There are also some restaurants and pizzerias where you can find a list of the tipycal dishes of these area: popular first courses are different types of risottos and pasta and for second courses lake fish as well as meat are a popular choice.
