The Midi-Pyrenees region

The Midi Pyrenees region is one of the largest departments in France. Tarn et Garonne a small area or county within the Midi Pyrenees, and on the edge of Gascony, should really be known as the Orchard of France as it is so rich in fruit and vegetable production.

The climate here is essentially Mediterranean and free from persistent winds like the Mistral. Temperatures range from T shirt weather in April and an average summer heat in the 30's. However, it doesn't start to cool until the middle of October when fleeces are needed in the evenings.

Described as the "The California of Europe" with over 2000 hours of sunshine each year, it means that even in winter the area is blessed with bright crisp and sunny days, ideal for brisk invigorating walks in beautiful countryside.

The local area is green and lush with a mixture of deciduous woodland containing many oak and ash trees, with its rolling hills it resembles parts of Sussex in Southern England at certain times of the year.

For lovers of the wildlife there are birds of prey, hoopoe, woodpeckers, kingfishers, wild boar, deer, red squirrels and much more.

Just over 2 hours from the ski slopes, 2 hours from the Atlantic coast, 1 hour from Toulouse, 2 hours from Bordeaux, 2 hours from Carcassonne and 3 hours from the Mediterranean coast makes the location central for day trips all over the South West whatever your requirements.

Auvillar

Auvillar, a medieval bastide village with its unusual circular corn exchange and impressive views over the Garonne valley, is listed as one of the prettiest villages in France (Un des plus beaux villages de France). It is also an important stop on the famous pilgrims walking route through France "Le Chemin de Saint Jacques-de-Compostelle" or "Way of Saint James".

Historically Auvillar was an important stronghold in the Gallo-Roman period and housed an affluent community. Evidence has been found to suggest that it was possibly rebuilt in the Middle Ages and its social and economic existence is clearly linked to the river Garonne.

Today the beautiful village of about 1,000 residents has many charming attractions with a weekly farmers market, local restaurants, and a variety of shops including a bakery, grocer, newsagent, post office, a chemist, tea room and Soap shop nd gift shop, there is even a hairdresser if the need takes you!

Within a few minutes walk from Le Farat, perched on a hill, is the pretty hamlet of Bardigues, with a charming little church and Auberge de Bardigues restaurant renowned for good dining by the locals and tourists alike.
