Provence is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, with its blend of sun-baked hilltop villages and glamorous resorts like St Tropez and Nice. Nice shows the influence of years as a world-class resort with its famous Promenade des Anglais and the city offers a real taste of France with its amazing bouillabaisse. The gorgeous sunshine of the Riviera has made the Cote d’Azur a powerful draw since the early nineteenth century, and the yearly influx of celebrities for the Cannes film festival only heightens the area’s allure. Cannes, Antibes and St Tropez are favourite mooring grounds for a plethora of yachts. The region boasts the hottest and sunniest climate in France, and landscapes range from the foothills of the Alps and fields of lavender to magnificent beaches. The revived port of Marseille and ancient Papal seat of Avignon make this area as varied culturally as it is naturally. Much of Provence is wild, shooting of wild boar being a particularly popular pastime. The white horses and flamingos of La Camargue are symbols of this unique nature reserve and are unforgettable once seen. Marineland with its huge whale pool and variety of marine life draws in the crowds, and Roman remains at Orange and Arles add to the region’s historical pull.
