“Quaint and relaxing” Brian and Joan's place is quaint, quiet, and the perfect picturesque setting for a relaxing vacation! My husband and I brought our 2 children along, and they said this is the best vacation they've had so far. Every morning we'd wake up to see deer in the field, and Joan's horses out in the stable. They are fabulous hosts and great to chat with. Although our vacation was extremely busy with traveling to different parts of the state, it was great to end the night sitting out on the porch watching wildlife. I especially loved the atmosphere of the cabin. It is fully furnished with fresh bedding and all the kitchen ammenities you need. We are coming back to South Dakota in June 2014 and look forward to seeing Brian and Joan again.

“Eagle Vista - Black Hills Vacation” Thank you Delf for use of your lovely cabin. You went above and beyond to make our once in a life time vacation special. There were a couple of hiccups that were completely beyond your control and your response was immediate and efficient. We thank you sooo much for all your help. I don't know if we'll ever have the opportunity to vacation in the Black Hills again but if we do you will be the first person I contact for accommodations. The cabin is lovely and wonderfully equipped. We sat for hours at night on the balcony looking at the stars and enjoying the peace of the mountains. Both of those are a rare luxury in Houston TX. God Bless the Black Hills and God bless you! Sincerely, Karen

“amazing” Debra could not be more helpful. Had fire going in fireplace when we arrived-got unexpected snow storm and couldn't get out to shop first morning-there was a knock on the door and we found a tray with rolls and fruit for breakfast-.later in the day we were going to try to walk to town-she lent us gloves.hats, and coats. Best host and service we ever had. A must if you are staying in area

South Dakota holidays

Every year, visitors from all over the world come to South Dakota to explore the pine forests of the Black Hills and experience the geological wonders of Badlands National Park. They also come here to take in the majesty of the presidents' heads on Mount Rushmore, one of America's most iconic and enormous works of art.

No matter where your travel plans take you in South Dakota, it's impossible to escape the breathtaking natural beauty of this state. But don't neglect the fascinating cities, nightlife, and quirky cultural experiences that also lie around every turn of South Dakota's winding roads.

Once a rugged outpost of the Wild West, South Dakota has retained its independent spirit while stepping into the 21st century. Come here to explore the landscape, learn more about nature and history, have adventures, and make lasting memories.

Here are just a few suggestions of places to visit while in South Dakota:

  • Rapid City: Visit the Cosmos Mystery Area. In 1952, two college students went searching for a place in the Black Hills to build a cabin. They found a small area deep in the woods where a few laws of physics did not seem to apply. Since that time, the strange patch of ground has mystified visitors from all over the world.
  • Deadwood: Explore the preserved historic gold mining site at Broken Boot, or visit Saloon No 10, a museum that doubles as a bar where Wild Bill Hickock met his end.
  • Sioux Falls: Visit the extraordinary Sertoma Butterfly House and observe living species from multiple continents. Then see the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial, where a life-sized outline of the battleship frames a collection of WWII artefacts.
  • Badlands National Park: Go hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding along the trails of one of the most popular national parks in the United States.
  • Hot Springs: Visit the Mammoth Site. Over 56 Columbian mammoths and wooly mammoths have been unearthed here, designating this working paleontological site and museum as a National Natural Landmark.
  • Pierre: Visit the capital city of South Dakota and explore state government buildings, the Cultural Heritage Centre, and unique attractions like the Oahe Dam and the National Guard Museum.

Come here between May and July, rent a summer home, and see the mountains and pine forests in full bloom. Or visit in the wintertime, book a cosy cabin and go snowshoeing along the backcountry trails. During any season of the year you can easily find a perfect lakeside holiday rental big enough for your family, or a trendy downtown condo.

Beautiful hilltop retreat.

We stayed while I ran the Black Hills 100 Trail Race. My wife and friends used the cabin as a staging ground to support my effort. The central location and peaceful surroundings supported our efforts perfectly. The cabin was clean and well appointed. The loft area would have been a little difficult to access for most adults (we didn’t need it) perfect for kids though.see more

An awesome stay

When we arrived, Mackenzie greeted us and showed us the cabin. It’s very nice, quiet, and the people in the area are so friendly. She’s got ladder ball, and other games, to play. We spent most of our time site seeing. Only a few minutes from Custer, and short drive to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sturgis SD, Deadwood, and Devil’s Tower WY. Below are pics from the porchsee more

Rustic luxury in the Black Hills

Our stay at the Skyview cabin was excellent and very relaxing. The weather was good for adventurers (sunny one day, 8” of snow the next) and the cabin was very comfortable with all the amenities. We had a fire in the fireplace every night and went for hikes during the day. Highly recommended and the owner, Teresa, was very helpful and accommodating.see more

A Peaceful Getaway

The kids and I found Nemo! Nemo, South Dakota that is :-) We had a wonderful stay at the Barnhouse. There was plenty of room for the kids and I. The kids loved being in the loft. Joan and Brian made us feel so welcome. We all loved getting to help take care of the horses. The morning walks in the yard and to the creek were very relaxing. The view of the Black Hills from the cabin was amazing! We were within an hour or less of every where we went. We spent a day in and near Rapid city seeing Bear Country, Dinosaur Park, and Mount Rushmore. We spent another day at Custer State Park. Our final day was spent exploring Deadwood and enjoying the cabin. I highly recommend staying at the Barnhouse. We were very comfortable and close to every thing we wanted to see and do.see more
