Fascinating landscape, flora & fauna with tantalising or brooding weather.
The location was great for our family with lots of space and car parking. The balcony was like an extra room to dine in and enjoy, savouring the the ever changing views towards the exquisite church. The location is peaceful and flora and fauna exciting for those not familiar with the area. We watched buzzards and listened to barking deer from the balcony in the evening, before watching them approach.
The weather was varied during our holiday and I took to walking along the hills towards the Blagos or over to the church. I enjoyed the solitude, sun and wonderful landscape & Tyrrol type barns.
The way to the church is by walking up the hill and then back down through the meadow studded with colourful wildflowers and down through the woods where I came across the yellow and black salamanders & occasional cep or bolette. Not sure which is the most dangerous, but I avoided both.
One day we travelled over to the foot of the Blagos and watched several deer and hares, the roads often narrow with steep sides and I had to park when the road became a track as the passengers became nervous! We progressed the rest of the way on foot. Really enjoyable.
We interspersed our stay with trips in the car to
1] Lake Bled, where it was glorious with dramatic landscapes & I swam before we enjoyed traditional Slovenian dishes in a bar. Five of us for ~100Euros, whereas in Venice that would just pay for two to dine out!
2] Lubljana for a walk around the town, the market for some ceps and the castle, before rain forced us into a delightful restaurant by the river to find Movia wines. Mmmm
3] Skanska Gora, which unfortunately sported the same sort of weather as Merthyr Tydfil, so we headed for Radovljica and had the a fantastic traditional dinner at Penzion Lectar [ www.lectar.com ] being introduced to a tremendous Kristancic sauvignon blanc and of course harmonica virtuoso's. A must for any fun loving foody.
4] Skofja Loka in the sun for a short trip to take in the local shops.
Dining in or out was great & inexpensive, a thoroughly enjoyable break and perhaps the next time I'll either go via Llubljana, Zagreb or Splitt in the spring or autumn. …
