Location description from owner

The KwaZulu-Natal region

Pietermaritzburg is steep in South African history. Some old architecture is present within the city and our city hall is one of the largest red brick buildings in the Southern hemisphere. In close proximity to the city are some lovely parks such as the Botanical gardens and Queen Elizabeth Park, where tame wild animals can be spotted. We have two lovely dams within half an hours drive of the city, Midmar & Albert Falls dams are great for fishing and also water sports. Also close by is the Karkloof falls, a great place for a picnic next to this beautiful waterfall and in the natural surrounds. A short drive away is Howick Falls which is one of the highest in South Africa. A worthwhile visit is the Karkloof canopy tours, where you can zip line in the tree tops. While in this area you can spend literally days driving in the green lush midlands meander. There is so much to experience here, with numerous arts and craft shops and loads of great quaint places to grab a bite to eat. Pietermaritzburg is a hour drive to Durban and the wonderful beaches as well as Shaka Marine world. An hour north you will be at the foot steps of the Drankensburg mountain range, a must if visiting the Natal region of South Africa. Pietermaritzburg is world famous you know! The Duzi canoe marathon starts in the city, one of the largest canoe marathons in the world. Then there is the Comrades marathon which has over 15000 runners annually, the largest of field in the world. The Midmar Mile is also the largest open water swim in the world. While most people will bypass Pietermaritzburg on their way to the more popular destination of Durban, I urge you to stay over for a couple days as there is so much to do and it is the perfect base to explore the mountains and the beach.

Pietermaritzburg

In our immediate area there is a few landmarks to see but honestly when visiting South Africa it is all about the outdoors. Pietermaritzburg has become the mountain biking capital of South Africa. For a number of years we have hosted the world cup and world champs. You can ride the same course the pro's competed on and also venture off into the forest area of howick and karkloof to experience wonderful trails. Pietermaritzburg has some super morning markets with fresh produce and crafts sold, a great place to get breakfast and some treats. For golf fanatics there are some superb golf course within ten minutes drive and clubs can be rented.
