The Kanchanaburi Province region

Erawan Waterfalls

The major attraction here is the Erawan Waterfalls. There are 7 levels altogether. The first four are easily accessible as there are proper steps to it. The last three are slightly more challenging but still easily managed by both young and old.

You can swim in each level of the falls. If you decide to take a rest and simply dip your feet in the pool, you will experience a free fish spa. If you have never experienced this before, it can be quite interesting. The first few minutes are quite daunting as the fishes swim by and start nibbling away your old dead skin. The next sensation is that of being slightly ticklish and if you can withstand through that, you will start to enjoy the fish spa and end up with beautifully smooth and soft skin for your feet.

Erawan is located about 65 km from Kanchanaburi. There are a few ways to get there as follows:

Public Bus:

You can take a public bus from the Kanchanaburi Bus Station. The bus number is 8170. The first bus leaves at 8am and there is a bus every 50 min (although it has been known to skip certain times during the low season). The journey is about 1.5 hours. And the last bus back from Erawan is 4pm.

Erawan Falls is located on Highway 3199. Parking is 20 baht for motorbike and 40 baht for car.

Tour: You can obviously join a tour which covers Erawan or have a customized tour of your own.

Admission fee is 200 baht per person for a foreigner and 40 baht per person for Thais or foreigners with valid Thai work permit (you must show your work permit at the ticket booth). The fee also includes admission to Pra That Cave which is another 10km north of Erawan Falls. Inside the caves are beautiful stalactites and stalagmites distributed among 4 big rooms. Bats also live in these caves.

Huay Mae Khamin Waterfalls

Another hidden gem is the Huay Mae Khamin Waterfalls. This fall is about 110km from Kanchanaburi and 50 km from Erawan Waterfalls. There are also 7 levels to this waterfall and it flows into the Srinakrin Dam Reservoir.

From the parking level, you can walk down to the first 4 levels and then back to the parking level and up to the remaining 3 level. This waterfall is very quiet compared to Erawan as it is not on the main item for any of the tour agents. Like Erawan, you can swim at the different levels but you will also not be bothered by the fishes as there is hardly any around.

There are basicaly two ways to get here as follows:

Private Transport:

You can hire a car or song teow to take you to this park or drive on your own. If you are driving, head towards Erawan and just before you turn left for the park, just continue straight for another 50 km and you will reach Huay Mae Khamin.

By Boat:

You can also reach here by boat from Sri Nakarin Dam.

Entrance to this park is 200 baht per person for a foreigner. If you are Thai or have a valid work permit, then entrance fee is 40 baht per person.

Hellfire Pass

Hellfire Pass (known by the Japanese as Konyu Cutting) was part of the Death Railway which was built during World War II. The pass is noted for the harsh conditions and heavy loss of life suffered by the labourers during construction. The labourers had to work up to 18 hours a day to complete the cutting. The sight of emaciated prisoners labouring at night by torchlight was said to resemble a scene from Hell, hence the name Hellfire Pass.

Hellfires Pass Memorial is dedicated to the Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and Asian labourers who suffered and died at Hellfire Pass and elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region during the Second World War. The Musuem opens at 9am till 4pm daily. Entrance to the musuem is free. You can also rent an audio set by paying for a fully refundabale deposit of 200 baht.

Today the trains no longer run this stretch of line. The nearest train station is Nam Tok.

Hellfire Pass is about 80km from Kanchanaburi. There are several ways to get there as follows:

a. Driving: Hellfire Pass is located on highway 323. It is about 80 km from Kanchanaburi.

b. Public bus: Take bus 8203 from Kanchanaburi Bus Station. The first bus is at 7.30am and there is a bus every hour. Last bus is about 4.45 pm. Tell the attendant where you wish to be dropped off.

c. Train and public bus: Take the train to Nam Tok and then switch to the bus 8203.

d. Tour: You can join a standard tour that covers hellfire pass and other places of interest or have a customized tour of your own.

There are several places of interest around the city that you can go on your own without any tour guide.

a. Bridge on River Kwai

Made famous by the movie Bridge on the River Kwai, this place is populary visited by all tourists. During WWII (World War II), the Japanese constructed the railway line from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Burma. The line that passes through some of the most scenic views in this area is about 250 miles. This is now known as the Death Railway.

Many Asian labourers and POWs lost their lives in building this railway line. Both living and weather conditions were unfavourable and the hard terrain did not make the job easier. It has been said that for every sleeper laid, one life is lost.

Today the railway line stops at Nam Tok, a 2 hour ride from Kanchanaburi. After the war, the remainder of the line was destroyed because it was said to be unstable. And every year the River Kwai Bridge Festival is organized to mark the Allied bombing of the bridge on 28th November 1944.

From Thai Garden Inn, there are two ways to get to the bridge. One scenic and beautiful path is a short walk which takes you to the quiet side of the bridge. Once you are there you can climb up a flight of steps to get to the rail and walk across it and be at the busy tourist end.

b. War Cemetry

There are two war cemetries in the area. The most popular one (Don Rak War Cemetry) is located in the main road (Sangchuto Road). Another is located in Chungkai which is about 5km west from Don Rak War Cemetry.

From Thai Garden Inn, you can easy get here by bicycle, taking a local tut tut or even walk. The walk would be about 30 mins passing through the tourist strip.

c. Death Railway Museum

The Death Railway Museum (also known as Thailand-Burma Railway Museum) is located just opposite the Don Rak War Cemetry.

If you have time for only one museum, this should be your choice.

Allocate yourself at least 1 hour to walk around this museum and learn why the Death Railway had to be built and how many people actually suffered because of it. We would suggest that you pay a visit to this museum before walking around the War Cemetry. It would give you a better insight and understanding of those who were sacrified in building this bridge.
