A tour around the city center and within walking distance in 4 minutes Butrint Just south of Saranda is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean, the ancient city of Butrint (open 8:00-sunset, admission 700 lek), a National Park and World Heritage Site.
Thousands of years of settlement from the Neolithic tribes, Illyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Trojans, Macedonians, Angevins, Venetians and Ottomans have left their traces here. The city was abandoned in relatively recent times, in the Ottoman period, and was later covered by vegetation and forgotten.
Other than the famous sites in Greece and Turkey, Butrint is largely intact, with pieces of brick sticking out of the ground here and there, and forests that offer a romantic atmosphere. Excavation is in progress, and you will see the protective sheets mosaics and other works of art.
Yet, there is much to see: the well-preserved theater, the temple of Asclepius, the remains of a large Roman house, an early Christian baptistery and a church, the ' Well of the Nymphs Greek era, and some massive walls of the Illyrian city. Climb the Acropolis a stunning view of the site and the bay. Now you get a good brochure at the entrance, and there are also excellent new information panels throughout the site.
