Welcome to Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. This historic city on the western edge of the island became a busy port thanks to its location on the trade routes between East and West.

In recent years, many travellers saw Colombo as a means to an end – somewhere you had to pass through to access the island’s more idyllic delights. But today, it’s a thriving destination in its own right, exploding with things to see and do – a buzzing Asian metropolis with stunning coastal and rural scenery not too far away.

History

For centuries, the teardrop-shaped island of Sri Lanka off India’s southern tip was a strategic stronghold. It was ruled successively by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, and its architectural patchwork reflects this changing cultural heritage. The city’s skyline today is a fascinating jumble of highrise apartment buildings standing alongside ancient temples, mosques and churches.

Things to see and do

There are landmarks and sights aplenty to admire in Colombo. The perfect place to start is the Colombo National Museum, where extensive collections showcase the city’s history. National treasures including the crown jewels and throne of the Kandyan kings are housed here. The museum is located next to Viharamahadevi Park--with its glinting golden Buddha statue, a stroll around the gardens and water features make for a peaceful afternoon.

Other must-sees in the heart of the city include the decorative red and white Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque and the incredibly detailed Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil temple.

Next on your list should undoubtedly be the striking white dome of the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara. This Buddhist temple is a tuk-tuk ride out of the city centre and offers dramatic architecture and even more fascinating history.

An escape from the city

If you’re ready for a break from the hectic city streets, then be sure to visit the Talangama wetland reserve. Described as an “urban oasis”, 100 species of birds have made this complex of ponds and wetlands home, along with beautiful butterflies and dragonflies. Another beautiful escape from the hustle of the capital is Mount Lavinia Beach. Located just a few miles up the coast, take a sedate train ride for the best views on the journey.

Book a lodge rental on the beach and you’ll be right next to Sri Lanka’s famously stunning shores, but not too far away from vibrant Colombo, either. The perfect balance.

Getting around

Sri Lanka’s roads are congested and getting around can be time-consuming. For that reason, when in Colombo the best approach is to walk if you possibly can! For short journeys across the city, a tuk-tuk ride is the standard (and in some cases exhilarating!) option.

For journeys further afield, buses are generally to be avoided due to the state of the roads. Trains offer a more gentle experience, but be prepared for longer journey times. If you’re planning to explore the whole island, hiring a car and driver can be relatively affordable.

But one thing’s for sure – however you choose to explore Colombo, you’ll be bowled over by Sri Lanka’s beauty.
