“Picturesque Location, Nice Rustic Interior, Sleeping Accommodation Could be Improved” We rented the Villa Morin Heights for a small intimate wedding with close friends and family. My first impression upon entering the villa is that it looked much nicer than the pictures on the website seem to indicate. We were charmed by the river-side backyard, and the common room had new flooring that looked much better than the old carpet that we were expecting.
We liked the rustic charm of the common room where we had the wedding dinner and the following dance party. Our guests only had positive comments about the venue. There was a diverse selection of tables and chairs, and enough side rooms to hide those we did not need during the party. The corner bar is a very nice feature of the venue and our guests liked hanging out around it.
There is a large industrial kitchen, and our caterer loved all the space he had to work with. The walk-in fridge was very practical to store all our wedding flowers as well as all the drinks we had with us.
The owner had cleaned up the backyard near the river (at least compared to the pictures we had seen) and set up a nice arch that we used for our wedding ceremony. Note that there was just enough matching outdoor chairs for our small group (25). A bigger group would need to use chairs of different colors to sit everyone outside. Some of the outdoor chairs were quite dirty and we spent a bunch of time cleaning them up ahead of the ceremony.
One thing to keep in mind is that this is a riverside property, and therefore there a lots of insects in the summertime, especially towards the end of the day. We had lots of black flies and mosquitoes circling around us and a bunch of our guests got bitten. Having been raised in Quebec, I was personally expecting that, and none of our guests complained too much about it, but if you are a person that reacts strongly to bug bites, you might want to go elsewhere or stay inside.
The rooms are quite simple, do not expect any kind of luxury there. The sheets provided where too big for the beds (the sheets were queen-size, but the mattresses were doubles). Certain rooms were missing curtains/blinds which not ideal if you are trying to sleep in after you wedding night. Most windows in the cottage are these very old guillotine-style windows that are difficult to open and close. One nearly chopped my fingers off.
One thing that wasn’t clear to us before we got there was that there are two pairs of rooms that are clearly made for 2 parents + 2 kids with a communicating door between the two rooms that does not lock. Unfortunately, our guests were mostly couples without kids or single people. This means that certain of our guests had to sleep in rooms without access to a bathroom (the closest “common” bathroom was quite far and didn’t have a shower). We knew that not every room had its own bathroom, but we didn’t expect the people sleeping in those rooms to have to go to other people’s room in order to use the bathroom. This made some of our guests uncomfortable, especially since most of them didn’t know each other.
The place was fairly clean when we got there, except for a big pile of dirty and smelly rags and towels on top of the washing machine. We ended up having to put it inside the machine to hide it, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t our job to do that. Another thing that we found annoying is that it was difficult to ask details about the venue to the owner. We were organizing this event from across the continent and there was a bunch of details that we needed to know in order to plan our wedding properly. The owner either provided vague answers or ignored our messages entirely. A better line of communication would have been appreciated.
Overall, it’s a charming venue with nice rustic room for a big party. The location is really gorgeous. The sleeping accommodation and customer service could be improved.
