Rural tourism also has a place in this beautiful area marked by its mining past and seafaring tradition. Its interesting natural areas protected as the Sierra de las Moreras, offer the possibility of practising activities in contact with nature in an area of great environmental value.

The name of Mazarrón is attached from its origin to the mineral wealth of its mountain ranges rich in lead, zinc, silver, iron, alum and red ochre. Immense work of mines, leaving abundant archaeological remains were already in Phoenician, Punic and Roman times. The Arabs also settled in the area, attracted by the abundance of minerals.

Formed after the Christian Reconquest, the place called houses of the alums of ochre as a result of the mines started to be exploited in the s. XV. Its strategic location became defensive bastion of the neighbouring lands of Lorca and Cartagena, proving that its numerous defensive towers that coto from Saracens advances in Africa.

Mazarrón acquires great importance at the end of century XIX and beginning of the 20th, during which exploits the iron and silver galena. Once depleted the wealth of the mines, Mazarron has managed to develop an important industry, tourism and agriculture, promoting at the same time its strong tradition of fishing and seafaring. This activity is evident in the port, with their vessels from fishing inshore and its fish market.

Result of its rich history, the streets of Mazarrón contain interesting sights, including its town hall and the old Ateneo Cultural, Art Nouveau style, signs of the splendor of turn of the century. Outside the town, there are other towers as the old Tower of the Summit (s. XVII) in the port, the Tower of the horses and the Torre de Santa Isabel, in Bolnuevo and the head of the windlass, a tower watch circular.

The weekend before to the pilgrimage, the fishermen load the Patron Saint from the chapel of Bolnuevo to the shrine of the Immaculate. This Act is the prelude to the celebration of the great day of the pilgrimage which takes place next Sunday with the image transfer from the sanctuary of the Purisma to the chapel of Bolnuevo.

This weekend there are many pilgrims who are partakers of these festivities, where starred in Bolnuevo Beach camping, moragas, meetings between friends, neighbors and family. The unit of the municipality of Mazarrón plays its main role in this celebration, where the most important is to have fun.

Lovely clean spacious house. We stayed for a week with a 5 month old baby and the house had everything we needed. The host and his son were both very helpful. I hope we can stay again.
