About this location
The Flanders region
West Flanders, Belgium's west-most province, has well preserved it's rural aspect. The rich Polder planes, partly below sea level, are a magnificent country for bikers and hikers. Although the terrain is flat, forcefull western winds can help you loose calories faster than you thought. The Northsea stretches all along the western coast and wide sandy beaches offer pleasant attractions in summer ànd in winter. To the south, a ridge of small hills borders the French frontier. Nearby cities like Bruges,Gent, Kortrijk and Lille (Fr) all go far back in history and display their rich past in superb city archtecture, astonishing cultural offer and cosy atmosphere.
Next to it's medieval past, Ypres is above all remebered for it's role in the Great War 1914-1918. An impressive In Flanders Fields Museum immerses visitors into the life of common people during that war. The city, entirely rebuilt to pre-war drawings doesn't stop to marvel: Cloth Hall and Belfry Tower, Saint Martin's Cathedral, Saint George's Memorial Church, Vauban Ramparts and many others all long for your visit.
Nearby artifical lakes, parts of Louis XIV's Ypres defence by Vauban, offer refreshing retreats for hikers and bikers. Innumerous Commonwealth Wargraves and War Memorials pintpoint your journey through Ypres' surroundings. The nearby amusement parks of Bellewaerde (Geluveld) and Plopsaland (Adinkerke-De Panne) await families with younger children for a day full of treats.
