About this location

The Provence region

From Tarascon you are in easy driving distance to St Remy de Provence, Arles, Nimes, Uzes, Avignon and Aix en Provence. You can enjoy the sites of the medieval town of Les Baux, perched on the hilltops of Les Alpilles and visit the small vineyards all around. Or you can spend a day at the beach in the Camargue where you can go horse riding with the cowboys or birdwatching in the salt flats and watch the flamingos at sunset.

There is plenty of opportunity for hiking or cycling in the countryside around and you can go canoeing down the river Gard and under the Pont du Gard itself (built 2,000 years ago by the Romans). There are many Roman sites all around, particularly the Amphitheatres at Arles and Nimes and the town of Glannum at St Remy de Provence.

If you are interested in Art you can follow in the footsteps of the many Artists that have lived in the area and discover the countryside and bars painted by Van Gogh in Les Alpilles and the town of Arles.

Ford-Maddox-Ford said "Provence is the only region on the Great Trade Route fit for the habitation of a proper man." and of all the towns, Tarascon was his favourite.

Tarascon is set in the heart of Provence alongside the river Rhone and there is much to see in the town itself. There are many restaurants in walking distance of the house including the Michelin starred restaurant, Meo. There is a train station with direct trains to the towns of Arles, Nimes, Avignon and Marseille. There is a supermarket in walking distance (5 minutes) and a weekly market with fruit and vegetables, locally reared meat, fish and shellfish caught from the sea nearby, olives and local artisanal food and crafts.

The town has a very impressive castle dating back to 1440 open to visitors, the fabric museum at Soulieado (opposite the house) and cloisters dating back to medieval times.

Over the Rhone is the town of Beaucaire, which has its own medieval castle and where you can sit alongside the canal and eat moules et frites (mussels and chips) and watch the many boats that are moored there. There is also an olympic sized swimming pool in Beaucaire with a large outside garden where you can spend the afternoon.

If you like hunting for treasures in a flea market, Beaucaire has one of the best around, every Wednesday morning.

Throughout the summer there are many festivals with music, food and often bull running through the streets. If you want to experience life in the heart of Provence, this is where you'll find it.

"We were 'at home' in history."

My husband and I traveled to Tarascon with several friends. Four of us stayed in this property and the others stayed in a hotel very near that the property owner had suggested. The arrangement worke… More

"Lovely, well-maintained Tarascon Medieval Rental"

This was a lovely blast into the past! The hoe is well-equipped and centrally located in town. Easy walk to grocery ad easy drive to streets heading to the heart of Provence. Rooms are nicely set up and comfortable. Very large T.V. room with a slew of english-speaking channels is a real bonus, too. Kitchen is enormous and quite up to date. Absolutely no complaints. Owner also gives excellent advice on eating and parking. Will go again! A+++

"A home with history, we enjoyed it"

We really enjoyed the townhouse; it is a carefully remodeled three story old home, with a modern kitchen and baths. The house shows its history in stone steps worn by hundreds of years of use and walls and timbers a little askew. It was very comfortable, a lived in home, we settled right in, soaking up history. Just make sure your knees love stairs. We were met by Nadine; she gave us a tour of the townhouse and explained how to use everything, no problem with language. And parking was not a problem, Nadine showed us where to park.
Tarascon is a great city for wandering around the medieval streets; we found several good restaurants and a street market that had everything. And, it is a good central location for exploring Provence.
