The North West Italy / Piedmont/Lake Maggiore region
In the North West of Piedmont a short distance from the border of Switzerland Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda. It is a place where Mediterranean nature and a mild climate blend with spectacular alpine scenery. The area is rich in beautiful buildings, colourful lush gardens and is enhanced by the delightful Borromean Islands with their equally impressive Italian architecture and gardens. Well known towns of international fame line the shores on both sides of the Lake and can be easily reached by ferry boats that make regular trips throughout the day all year round. The Cities of Milan and Turin are short day trips from the Lake and excursions can also be taken to nearby Lake Orta and the home of the Matterhorn mountain in Zermatt, Switzerland. There are many activities that take place around the Lake including water skiing, sailing, canoeing and swimming. Lake Maggiore is a magical place that combines modern facilities with the classical charm of a bygone era making it one of Northern Italy’s finest holiday destinations.
Stresa area
Stresa is one of the best known resorts on Lake Maggiore and is noted for its majestic architecture, its beauty and its cosmopolitan atmosphere. It offers warm & friendly Italian hospitality with its lakeside promenade and old town square with colourful cafes and shops. It is an elegant and charming town with its narrow cobbled streets full of hidden treasures. Stresa lies at the foot of the Mottarone mountain which can be reached by cable car from one end of the town. The top of the mountain offers spectacular views including the highest peak in Italy, Monte Rosa , as well as the surrounding area. One of the most enchanting aspects however lies on the lake itself on the Borromean islands, each with their own individual character and history. Isola Madre and Bella house exquisite gardens and palaces. Pescatori is a local fishing village still in operation. On land there are many other gardens to visit both in Stresa at Villa Pallavicino and Pallanza at the Villa Taranto a short ferry ride away. You can also travel on the ‘Centrovalli’ mountain railway into Switzerland to Locarno, taking in breathtaking alpine views, and return to Stresa by ferry boat visiting any number of the towns that line the shore along the way. There are numerous walks to suit everybody on Mottarone or the nature walks that contour the lake in between nearby villages. For the more adventurous you can book to stay overnight in a refuge in the nearby Val Grande – one of the wildest national parks in Italy. The Italian ski slopes can be reached in around 45 minutes and the famous Swiss resorts of Zermatt and Saas Fee in a couple of hours by car. There are also numerous popular golf courses in the area. Stresa hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year, the most famous being the celebrated International classical Music Festival held from July – September.

Guestbook for Castello
We had a wonderful time in Castello - it was a great location (no need for a car), great view and full of those "little" touches which make it truly a home away from home, so thank you...
Just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our time in Stresa. Your apartment was so lovely and spacious, we really enjoyed breakfasting on the balcony...
The apartment is ideally located being very close to the centre but far enough away so you can only hear the church bells...
I am so glad we got to discover this beautiful town, Stresa has lots to offer and we made the most of it...
Thanks again, we had a lovely holiday and were very keen on Stresa. We tried a number of restaurants in town but our favourite has to be Pappagallo, for the food and atmosphere and friendly staff.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your apartment, what lovely views of the mountains with the snow on top!
