Village Farmhouse with large private garden, farmyard/play area and Orchard
Stara Moravica, Vojvodina, Serbia
This lovely house in a fascinating location is available for rent.
A fully renovated traditional village farmhouse built around 1900 in "Hungarian baroque" style. With 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen/dining room, comfortable reception, spacious sun-room/hallway and cellar. Total floor area 151 sq m. The house accommodates up to 6 people (or 8 using the sofa-bed). There is also a cot for an infant.
It is set in a very large and charming private garden and orchard, with a barn and several out-buildings. The garden has a BBQ and outdoor dining area. You can do self-catering (cook indoors or outdoors), visit the local “hunting” restaurant less than 10 minutes’ walk away, or order local specialities prepared for you by a neighbourhood cook.
The Village House is ideal for relaxation and retreat, or for full participation in rural life. Bikes and a canoe are provided for guests’ use. Local contacts and details are provided for wine-making, cheese-making, hunting, cycling, bird-watching, canoeing, distilling (rakija/pálincka), language lessons (Serbian, Hungarian), fishing, horse-riding, horse & cart rides, bee-keeping, and local markets, museums and festivals. We are very happy the Village House and its guests make a positive economic contribution to Stara Moravica and the surrounding area.
When required, heating is by a traditional wood-fired Peć (Kachelofen) in the main house, a wood-fired stove in the kitchen, and electric storage heating in the bedrooms. The traditional design of the house means it stays relatively cool in summer and retains heat in winter. Firewood is provided.
If you want a car-free holiday, the Village House is accessible by train from Budapest and Belgrade (alight at Bačka Topola, then take a taxi for less than €10).
Stara Moravica is a large village of about 5,000 population with bakeries, butchers, two supermarkets, bank with ATM, post-office, pharmacies, four hardware stores, weekly market, internet café, ice-cream parlour, clothes shops, phone/computer store, children’s playground, several convenience stores, kiosks and bars. Cafes offer free wi-fi. The architecture and layout has completely retained the original Austro-Hungarian design with wide, tree-lined streets, and large houses with extensive grounds attached. It is an excellent base from which to visit all Vojvodina including Subotica, Sombor, Novi Sad and Fruska Gora.
There is a Swimming Pool at ClubCafe in the village (Jun-Sep, entrance €1.30/day). There is a good children's playground, and a field with stables and horse/pony riding. All amenities are about 10 minutes’ walk, or less than 5 minutes’ cycle, from the house.
Everyone in Stara Moravica speaks Hungarian, and most speak Serbian. The village is very welcoming and people of all ages will say “hello” to visitors – listen for “jó napot!” or “szia!” and reply with the same phrase. Many people have worked in Germany or Switzerland, so the “foreign” language is as likely to be German as English, especially among older people. Teenagers learn more English than German. An English-speaking neighbour will welcome you to the house and help you during your stay with any arrangements you want to make (a modest fee may be payable if your requirements are particularly time-consuming. If this is the case she will tell you in advance). Help in French, German, Spanish, Russian and Italian is also usually available.
In Subotica and Sombor you will have no problem finding people who speak good English.
The house has its own broadband and wifi connection (free for guests). Wifi is also available at 2 cafes in town and in the library, which also has computers and printers available.
