About this location
The Slovenian Littoral Region
The land of cherries, apricots, excellent wines and breathtaking views. Steeped in history and culture you will never be short of things to wile away your time.
The “Emerald” Soca is a remarkably beautiful river valley with its source in the heart of the Triglav National Park and running down to the Italian Adriatic. The upper stretch of the valley runs through the beautiful Julian Alps and is a magnet for adventure sports lovers – offering an abundance of river activities (rafting, kayaking, canyoning) and mountain activities (plenty of excellent hiking, mountain-biking and skiing at Bovec Kanin, Slovenia’s highest ski resort, shortly to be connected to the Italian resort of Sella Nevea across the border).
Bovec is the main town in the area, a charming little place with lots of good restaurants, bars and places to stay and a growing global reputation for adventure sports. Kobarid is the other main town of interest in the area, half an hour’s drive down the valley from Bovec, a small but beautiful town boasting some of Slovenia’s finest restaurants and a first class museum about the role of the town and the area as a major front in the 1st World War.
Further down the valley is the spectacular Tolminska Korita (Tolmin gorge) and a pretty lake at Most na Soci. Following the Soca river from Tolmin southwards, the rugged peaks of the Julian Alps gradually give way to softer wooded sub-alpine hills, and the influence of the Adriatic and of neighbouring Italy becomes ever more apparent. The river itself remains the focus of the area but in its lower reaches the adrenalin sports of the north are replaced by more leisurely pursuits such as swimming and fly-fishing.
East of Tolmin is the wonderful and wild Baška Grapa valley following the Baca river and south of Tolmin to Idrija runs the beautiful Idrijca river, both popular for fly-fishing and offering the possibility of swimming in the Summer.
Polovnik House is set in the centre of the peaceful village of Srpenica with views over the village square and the stunning Julian Alps beyond and with access to the Soca River in easy walking distance (The village of Srpenica is an access point to the Soca River for rafting and kayaking). In the village there is a restaurant / pizzeria and in the next village (Žaga) a couple of kms away there is another restaurant and convenience store. Circa 10 km South is the lovely historic town of Kobarid which offers some of Slovenia's best restaurants and a fascinating museum to the role of the area as a major front in the first world war. 10 km in the other direction is the attractive resort town of Bovec at the head of the Soca Valley which offers a wide range of shops, some fantastic restaurants and various other amenities, not to mention a pretty main square, lovely buildings and a great atmosphere (Bovec is a magnet for adventure sports enthusiasts which gives the place a vibrant, active, outdoors feel). Bovec is also the location of the gondola up to skiing at Kanin - Sella Nevea which is just 10 minutes drive from the house and has recently been connected to Sella Nevea in Italy to create an excellent cross-border resort (also open in Summer for spectacular walking and mountain biking). There is a huge range of outdoor activities in the area from hiking and mountain biking, which are possible from your doorstep in Srpenica, river pursuits such as rafting, kayaking, canyoning & fly fishing and mountain sports including paragliding and skiing. The area focuses around the “Emerald” Soca river which is a remarkably beautiful and unspoilt river valley with its source in the heart of the Triglav National Park (a pristine alpine wilderness with its border just outside Bovec) and running down to the Italian Adriatic. Kobarid is the other main town of interest in the area. Further down the valley is the spectacular Tolminska Korita (Tolmin gorge) and a pretty lake at Most na Soci.

"charming house in a quiet and peaceful area of the Julian Alps with great adventure nearby"
This house has been charmingly restored so that it is modern and extremely well equipped inside but sitting in a lovely village with warm and friendly people across the square from the church and it's daily tolling bells.. .Spectacular views all around with quiet walks to the river and adventure sports ,canyonning ,kayaking and rafting close by .There is a restaurant up the lane which has excellent pizza and good reasonable local cuisine .Look for the colorful bread and fish vans which park in the square and sell wonderful homemade bread and fresh fish bi weekly..
I highly recommend a stay at Polovnik House if you are at all interested in outdoor adventure sports summer or winter or if you just want to relax in the shadow of the Alps and enjoy the hospitality and peacefulness of a small village in Slovenia..
