The Transylvania region
Casa Roger just a short hop from the rural village of Loman is set in one of the most spectacular parts of Transylvania. Summers are very hot and winters white and crispy. This region in central Romania is becoming more popular day by day now that Romania is a fully fledged member of the EU I consider Romania to be the jewel of Europe, then maybe I am biased as I have been travelling here for almost two decades now. I think after your visit you too will think so and I guarentee you will get smitten with the desire to return to Romania again and again
Sebes / Loman area
The village of Loman dates back some many hundreds of years and is Real Romania - None of the City stuff. You will see true Romania and experience the hospitality of one of the most friendly people in the whole of Europe. Send me an email and I will send you an invite to my facebook site with hundreds of pictures of real Romania. No time like the present email me now and take a journey through my many photos. Loman makes a great base to explore Romania from - Why not visit the Red Lakes Lecu Rosu or why not take in Draculas Trail and visit Sigisoare, Sibiu and Bran near Brasov. Visit the very many monesteries throughout the country. Even have a humble picnic or barbecue in some secluded spot and just kick back and take in the magnificent views. If you are into retail therapy then pop into Sebes and pick up some lovely ornaments or visit the local Thursday Market and for you youngsters pick up some denims I guarentee you have never seen such an array of denim. Leather also is very cheap. For photographers the photo opportunities are endless.
How to get there
TRAVEL OPTIONS
NUMBER ONE OPTION - FLY OUT OF LONDON/LUTON TO Cluj Napoca Transylvania Romania WITH WIZZ FOR AS LITTLE AS £38.00 RETURN (Search for flights on www.skyscanner.net) - Brilliant deal! (there is only one cheaper option and that's by donkey and will take weeks and probably cost a fortune in carrots anyway) Cluj Napoca Airport (Clooj) is around 114kms from the location or a two and a half hour drive. For those who wish not to travel by hire car and just wish to chill out in location on arrival then I recommend the following from Cluj-Napoca Airport: On arrival at Cluj airport engage a REGISTERED TAXI - Do not allow approaches by taxi drivers who are not registered - Go to the taxi rank and look for taxi with a registration number - ask the driver to take you to the main railway station - (Gara pentru trenul la Sebes) Registered taxis charge around 1.80 Ron per Km - (2009) its not too far anyway then take a train to Sebes (Sebesh) (In phoenetical Romanian - Vrow sa koomper un bilet la Sebesh va rog - Un = One / Doy = 2 / Tray = 3) (I would like to buy a/2/3 ticket/s to Sebes please) this will cost around 35 Ron or New Lei (About £7) - You get a better exchange rate for your money by changing it in Romania for example Lloyds TSB offered around 4.05 Ron to the pound in Spring of 2009 when Volksbank in Sebes offers 4.60 The trains run every hour almost but you can check by logging onto CFR Romanian Railways on the internet and looking for train timetables thereat. On arrival in Sebes I can arrange for someone to pick you up although they may not speak English this is half the fun - They will have your name on a card or piece of paper and be waiting at the station for you to take you up to the house - This service you should pay for at your discretion but I would suggest a payment of £15 or 15 Euros would be fine to cover the drivers time and fuel. The car journey from Sebes station is about ten miles including five miles off road. This service has to be booked prior to your leaving home by email to me.
The Future for internal travel looks great with Sibiu International being upgraded and of course The Transylvanian Highway is being constructed with a view to being completed by 2012 ensuring high quality highways right through Romania.
2. From Great Britain you can fly from London Heathrow into Sibiu via Bucharest with Tarom the Romanian National Airline (great service and I recommend you book online way in advance to secure cheaper flights)
3. There is also a new cheap airline called Wizz which flies into a secondary airport at Baneasa near to the main Bucharest Otopeni. (Sometimes it flies in direct to Otopeni Airport) Wizz flies out of London Luton Airport and is dirt cheap. From Bucharest Hire a car or Hire a car in Sibiu after a connecting flight from Otopeni or even a train ride to Sibiu from Gara de Nord in the capital - Car Hire can be organised by logging onto www.smart7.ro and arranging from Sibiu. There is a train link from the main airport in Bucuresti which can link you to Gara De Nord entailing a short 40 minute train ride thus avoiding the city traffic and Romanian taxi drivers
4. If you are feeling like a tour through Europe why not travel into Sebes or Sibiu from London Victoria Coach Station with Eurolines for around £170 return (2007) Then hire a car - Best to arrange that online prior to arrival. Again I can arrange a pick up from Sebes if needed
5. Flights from Germany are direct from Munich into Sibiu. Easy Jet fly into Munich from Luton Airport
6. And for the lovers of Easy Jet why not fly out of Luton into Charles de gaulle Paris for next to no money and then hop onto a Carpatair flight into Sibiu
7. Finally for the really intrepid traveller then do it by road as a European Tour taking in the sights of places like Brugge, Koln, Frankfurt, Wurzburg, Vienna and lovely Budapest. I have done this many many times and yes while it is a longish journey its so much fun seeing so much of Europe. No visas to worry about just ensure you get your Vignettes in Austria, Hungary and finally Romania. Hey! Be Intrepid especially you youngsters.
Bon voyage! Ein gute Rheise! Drum Bun and yes Have a good trip folks

Guestbook for Casa Roger
Ever reflected on how over used is the term 'get away from it all' is? Don't get me wrong I'm all for the charms of Rome, Morocco or the beaches of The Med - But it's not really away from it all is it? I don't quite know what 'IT' is -But it's definitely still there somewhere. In October last year however, I did actually 'get away from it all' For the first time in many years I actually got through a whole two weeks without the slightest urge to call in to the office. For the first time ever I actually experienced a different culture rather than observe it. It's more than an escape - It's a reality check. Try getting stressed about your phone bill etc when you wake up each morning to the picture postcard views across the Carpathian mountains and the gentle sound of cowbells coming from a neighbouring field. Of course you don't have to leave the house at all. Reading on the balcony, long lazy lunches on the terrace and of course lengthy chats with Roger's neighbours (conducted entirely with a Romanian/English Phrasebook or dictionary (Berlitz is good) universal hand gestures and alot of laughter) can easily eat up a whole day. Before you know it the sun is setting over the mountains and you are snuggled up on comfy sofas leafing through a book and thinking about new Romanian phrases to try out on the locals. Hey almost perfect! KS. England
The house which sleeps upto Six adults has the most breathtaking views over the mountains. The air is so clean and it's so peaceful. For peace and quiet you would go along way to find better. If you like shops and bars nearby this isn't the place for you. The good news is the proprietor (Roger) lives next door and speaks both English and Romanian (Also German) and will be able to guide you enabling you to see the very best of Transylvania. We were so pleased we had a four-wheel-drive vehicle as we were able to go to the locals Summer retreat (way up high in the meadows at Careara - 2,500 feet) to enjoy spectacular scenery and amazing hospitality from the villagers who treated us like celebraties. Although poor in financial terms they displayed a wealth of hospitality and generosity and it was a wonderful way of teaching the children that there are still things money can't buy. Penny & Mark - Belgrade Serbia
Dear Roger We wanted to send you an email and say a huge thank you for allowing us to stay in your house whilst in Romania. What a beautiful country Romania is we had no idea of the majesty and awe we would experience just looking out of the front door of the house it was glorious and there was so much peace up in the mountains. The house was lovely, very spacious and open planned it was great to be in a place that felt like a home away from home where we could relax and do what we wanted. There was a great fireplace that warmed the whole house making it so cosy. To see the amazing views from the bedroom windows of the lush green rolling hills and snow capped peaks every morning was a wonderful experience. Generally the Romanian people were so very welcoming and friendly even though there was a language barrier they were always so very keen to help us. Thank you again Roger Simon and Sharon Cambridgeshire England
Absolutely fabulous Roger - The whole week was one big adventure and great to get away from buzzing telephones and emails back in England. Loved the trip up to Careara and seeing the roaming horses and wildlife - Enjoyed the BarB immensley - It was a great experience but next time I may book for two weeks instead of the one. I shall gladly recommend such a visit to all my friends for future consideration - Thanks Again Roger - You were a great host. Thanks also for the Meet and Greet and welcome hamper that helped no-end Harry - Welwyn Garden City Hertfordshire England
