The Catalunia region

Costa Brava is one of the favourite destinations for people who love travelling by car. Only arriving in Costa Brava by car (your own or on hire) you can visit and appreciate the variety of landscapes, the hidden creeks, the villages off the beaten track. To move around the area there are three main roads: the Autopista A7 is the motorway that starts at the French border and ends in the deep south of Spain; while it passes Costa Brava it runs along the coast and allows a quick access to all the seaside resorts.

The motorway is with fee, but it's worth of it: it's wide, safe and the ways out are well signposted. Parallel to the motorway runs the National N-II, a highway that's wide enough but is very busy in high season. It crosses all the roads that run to the seaside resorts, so we don't recommend it if you want to get soon in a specific place. When you get out of the motorway to reach the seaside resorts, usually, there are several kilometers to run on the local roads. If you have plenty of time, we suggest you to run along the coastal roads dropping away the sea. You'll probably want to stop every few meters to take a picture and to admire the hidden creeks where the sand is white and the water crystal clear. If you don't want to travel by car all way from home, but you want to be free to use the car once arrived, you can hire it in Barcelona or Girona.

In Costa Brava there is a good bus network, so you can easily reach beaches by public buses. We don't give you timetables because there are a lot of little companies that organize both very short and long distance routes. Sarfa is the most important company of Costa Brava, whose buses link almost all the seaside resorts. We suggest you to go to the bus station or at the tourist office to get information on timetables and routes.

Only part of the coast is served by railways. Renfe (Spanish state railways) serves the section going from Portbou, on the French border, to Barcelona via the up-country of Costa Brava. The section of the coast going from Blanes to Barcelona is served by the Renfe trains (Tel. 902 240 202) going to Massanet-Massanes. You can take this train at the Sants Station, in Plaça Catalunya, in Arc de Triomf and in El Clot-Aragó. If you're coming from Barcelona Airport, you have to take the train to Barcelona-Sants, then jump on the train to Massanet-Massanes. This line ends in Blanes. Going onwards means taking the buses directed to the other Costa Brava destinations.

Ferry and hovercraft

If you spend a morning on any Costa Brava beach you realize the amazing (sometimes annoying) quantity of ferries and hovercrafts linking the coastal towns. There are services both for commuters and tourists going to the beaches and hidden creeks. In many cases ferries cater both, so in August it may happens that you sit elbow to elbow with a manager wearing a suite who is going to work. Generally on the beaches of the seaside resorts there are information booths selling tickets and giving brochures. Typical of Costa Brava are the glass bottom boats bringing tourists to see seabeds and make excursions to the caves. A return day ticket, even in different times, costs about 10 euros.

Costa Brava is a real heaven for people who love travelling by boat. In a few kilometres of coast there are 18 marinas: Aiguablava, Blanes, Cala Canyelles, Canals de Santa Margarida, Colera, El Port de la Selva, Empuriabrava, L'Escala, L'Estartit, Llafranc, Llançà, Marina de Palamós, Marina Port d'Aro, Palamós, Portbou, Roses and Sant Feliu de Guíxols. They offer from the 61 boat berths of Aiguablava to the 5000 of Empuriabrava.

Sant Vincenc de Montalt

This area has a Mediterranean climate that allows you,

in any season of the year, to relax and restore with

various sport and cultural activities, and to benefit from the healing properties

of the Caldes D'Estrac Thermal Baths, nearby.
