The Aegean Islands region

Rhodes, or Rodos in Greek, is the largest of the Dodecanese islands and one of the largest in the Aegean. Shaped like an arrowhead it is almost 80 kms long and 38kms at its widest point with a 220kms coastline.

It is close to the coastline of Turkey which is easily accessible by the ferries which leave daily from Mandraki Harbour in Rhodes Town.

This is also true of the islands of Symi - once famous for its sponge divers - and Chalki. Symi is a nearby island worth visiting for the spectacular views from its hillsides and the wonderful neo-classical houses clustered around the harbour.

The capital of Rhodes town is in the north and most of the tourist development is situated down the east coast reaching as far as Kiotari in the south -and on the west coast reaching almost to the airport, approx 14 kms from the capital.

The island has a varied geography, mountains and shady pine forests, coastal plains, the gentle hills of the south and a spectacular coastline.

Rodos boasts an average of 320 days of sunshine a year and has some of the most spectacular beaches in Greece, all within easy reach of the property.

Rhodes

Although Rodos is firmly in the 21st century it still retains its typical Greek character.

From the fertile plains in the south & west ( where most of the local produce is grown ) to the towering Mt. Ataviros in the centre, the breathtaking views from the cliffs of Monolithos, the gloriously sandy beaches of the east coast to the magnificent southern sweep of the surfing paradise that is Prassonisi - Rodos has much to offer the lucky visitor.

Rhodes Old Town is the best preserved medieval town in Europe, a vast walled citadel which is an UNESCO world heritage site. Take a walk along the top of the gigantic walls and get a bird's eye view of the old town, Mandraki harbour and the azure sea beyond.

Browse in one of the many tourist shops that crowd the busy cobbled streets, eat and drink to your heart's content ( go on, you're on holiday !) in any one of the dozens of cafes and tavernas, visit the museums, mosques & the street of the Knights where you will feel that you have stepped back in time.

When you've had your fill exit through one of the many impressive gates and visit the New Town with its trendy shops and cafes, not forgetting to visit the 4 (!!!!) umbrella shops in Lambraki Street ! It's a treat to wander along the tree lined roads drinking in the mediterranean ambience.

Drive south along the east coast to Faliraki, for the young and maybe the young at heart, once a small fishing village and now a bold, brash party place with a surprisingly nice beach and a Waterpark which is definitely worth a visit.

For those who indulge there is Afandou - with an award winning par 72 golf course - just 15 min drive from Pylonas village.

In the centre of the island is Efta Piges (7 springs) and Petaloudes (Valley of the butterflies).

On the mountain of Profitis Ilias (the prophet Elias) we find the summer retreat of Mussolini , built during the Italian occupation and now a hotel.

In Lardos, just 5 mins drive from our village there is go karting and mini golf as well as tavernas, shops, hotels and many good restaurants.

Lindos is the most spectacular village on the island, just a 5 min drive away.

A fabulous confection of sugar cube houses clinging to the hillside crowned by the Acropolis, a 4th century temple to the goddess Athena, on each side an extraordinary vista of turquoise sea.

Take a walk through the shady cobbled streets and climb to the summit along a winding path, or take a Lindos taxi (as the donkeys are called).

As always there are untold shopping opportunities and rooftop tavernas to visit and enjoy the many wonderful views across Lindos beach and St Pauls Bay ( very romantic !)

Come the night it reveals itself as a partygoers dream with the bars and clubs opening well into the small hours.

Further south is Pefkos (Pine trees), once a sandy road running along the coast, now a thriving and lively beach resort with some restaurants well worth a visit of an evening - and still less than a 10 min drive away from home.

Continuing south we find a smattering of tourist areas before the island opens up into a rural, undeveloped plain with just traditional villages such as Gennadi, Lachania and Kattavia where life has barely changed for the last 50 years - mobiles & satelite TV notwithstanding !

At the very end of this lovely island we are delighted by the majestic sweep of the sands of Prassonissi - a surfing & windsurfing mecca for the purists but also a lovely place to play in the waves.

And that's just the East coast !!

My friends and me are very happy about holidays in Rhodos mid of October. Probably only Greeks say that the season gets over with summer months. The weather is still around 25, the sea 23-24 degrees. … More

Thank you for your appreciative comments, we're delighted you enjoyed your stay at Villa Maya. Tavernas in Pylonas village are not always easily discernable but are worth the hunt, especially Loulla's and The Eucalyptus which is an Italian restaurant co-run by an actual Italian ! The bakery/cafe is also a lovely place to have your morning coffee & freshly baked croissant. Thanks also for your comments about midstay cleaning. We have considered this option in the past but we found that guests prefered to not be intruded upon. It can however be provided on request by our representatives and paid locally. Thanks again for choosing Villa Maya and we hope to see you again in the future.

"Utterly Brilliant"

This is without doubt the best Villa we have ever stayed in; a true home-from-home with impeccable facilities, furnishings and décor; with the added advantage of your very own swimming pool and a built-in barbeque in the garden. We couldn't have wished for anything more. We also found the owners to be the perfect hosts from afar (thanks Dea for your friendly attentiveness throughout)

Located in a small, sleepy village amongst the olive groves, this Villa is a real haven for relaxation, whilst still affording easy access to all the facilities needed for a self-catering holiday. We also discovered several excellent restaurants in the local town of Lardos, where the traditional Greek food and friendliness of the restaurateurs was fabulous.

Given the secluded location of the Villa, we would most certainly recommend having a car for the duration of your stay here. The nearest beach is a good ten minute drive away and the best beaches, a little bit further. We found the soft golden sandy beach at Pefkos to be our favourite of the holiday. Lindos is also a 15 minute drive away but an absolute must for an evening stroll through the maze of quaint, narrow, colourful streets when the daytime crowds have died down.

Utterly brilliant and highly recommended!

"Excellant holiday"

My personal preference is for a high standard villa with own pool and in quiet but scenic location.Villa maya is all of these things. The villa itself is beautifully furnished and well kept, equipment level is excellent- free WI-FI, large flatscreen TV ,washing machine ,aircon and more (as per spec given on advert).Pool was splendid ,I think one of the largest I saw in the area. i absolutely loved the location ,to my mind the south end of the island is the best , Pylonas is a quiet little village, the villa was in a great location quiet but accessible. We were a 5 minute drive from Lindos ,near the best beaches on the island (in my opinion) eg Golden Sands for alternatives to pool days and a max 40 min drive to Rhodes to experiance the towns night life and water park for the youngsters. The owners couldn't have been more helpful ,information and assistance offered right from the initial booking ,a little welcome pack and easily available assistance from their on location rep if needed. We were supplied by Dea the owner with a good map guiding us from Rhodes airport but i must confess once we got to village it was almost midnight and I circled around the correct turnings without quite getting it right but no problem a local on his motorbike on the main village street quickly saw our predicament and he led us directly there (thats what i like about the Greek Islanders always friendly and willing to help). After that once it was easy!. We had a fantastic stay and when i come back to Rhodes i will definatly be looking to book this villa again

Thank you for your lovely feedback, it was very nice having you and your family. Thanks also for letting us know about the problems you had with the map we sent, I will try and tweak it a little so it's clearer !

"Exquisitely Sublime!"

Me and 2 friends went to stay at Villa Maya for a week at the end of May. All we were looking for was a place to relax, take in some sun, and hopefully have a few places to go out of an evening. What first drew me to the villa was that it shared it's name with me! And it turned out, that the Villa of Dea and Yioryos was absolutely perfect for our needs! And had so much more than we expected!

The village itself is very quiet and serves as a perfect getaway from all the package holiday goers around the island. However, there are lots of restaurants/bars to go to in the nearby Lindos and Pefkos if you feel like getting out and about.

Although we rarely left the house itself because we just didn't want to! From the layout, to the fixtures and fittings, decor, pool, barbecue, roof terrace and the stunning garden. It honestly felt like I was staying in the holiday home I wish I had. Everything there is finished to the highest standard, but also feels so comfy and homely, that it just makes you want to relax as if it's your own home. The bedrooms are beautiful, and the kitchen has absolutely everything you could need. It felt like a high class villa, but without the price tag! Stunning.

When you go on holiday, you often have the problem of trying to travel light, and so forgetting the little things that you 'could have taken' with you, but you weren't sure you would actually need. With the exception of paracetamol! absolutely everything was provided for us in the villa. Board games, books, big t.v, films, i pod dock, cd player, wifi, a wii with games, even a few plug socket adaptors, pool toys (lilo, volleyball, bat and ball, and badminton!) The owners also provided loads of info on places to visit, nearby supermarkets, butchers, fish mongers, bakeries, taxi services and restaurants.

We are all in our late twenties, but I can imagine the house would be well suited to families with teenagers and also older couples.

Most days, we would lounge by the pool, in the hot hot sun! have lunch on the terrace, pop out to buy some fish from the nearby Lardos, and then come home and stick on the barbecue. We would eat out on the terrace and then roll ourselves inside to watch a film before either bedtime, or star gazing on the roof.

I have been to the island of Rhodes a few times before, and so was quite content to laze around all day in the villa. But for anyone who hasn't been before, the Location of Villa Maya is ideal for exploring the island. It is very easy to find your way around, and the village of Pylona is only 15 mins or so from many more bustling villages, beaches, restaurants and even the water park.

I will definitely be returning to Rhodes in the future, and will absolutely be staying at Villa Maya when I do! Thank you so much for the perfect holiday. :)

"Excellent"

My sister, brother-in-law, my partner and I stayed at the Villa Maya for a week at the beginning of October and we had a brilliant time.

The Villa Maya has everything you could possibly ask for and is definitely a home from home. While the village itself is quiet there are plenty of places within a short drive to visit.

The weather was freakishly good for the time of year we visited so we made full use of the facilities, the sun loungers, the sun deck, bbq, the pool was lovely with a very nice and helpful pool cleaner.

I would not hesitate to recommend this property and Dea was always on hand to answer any questions and provide any guidance.

Thank you for a great holiday.

"Absolutely fantastic and thoroughly recommendable"

The property is simply sublime. Very tastefully decorated and well equipped - one is left wanting for nothing. Air conditioning, amply sized pool, Wii, Scrabble (hurrah!), wifi, books, iPod docking, 2 showers, it's got the lot. Lots of big and little things that go a long way in making one's holiday special. The location for us was great: in a quiet area yet a hop skip and a jump to the lovely Lindos and close to more beautiful beaches than you can shake a bucket and spade at.
Communication with the owner was second to none. The only thing we didn't really like was having to leave.

"Home from Home ....but with sunshine and a pool !"

Our stay at Villa Maya was truly relaxing and very comfortable. Every need was catered for , a well equiped kitchen and lounge.Very comfortable beds and air conditioning which adjusted to a temperature that suited the individual giving us all the best sleep we ever had in a hot country. The pool was excellent and well used, and kept in good order by Will. The terrace with table and chairs stayed cool in the heat and we had many a meal here and played games in the evening. The automatic lights around the gardens gave a lovely ambience at night.

The village of Pylonas is not touristy at all. It has several tavernas and a pizzeria in walking distance ...the pizzas were lovely and also good as a takeaway on those evenings when leaving the villa and pool was too much effort...thats how relaxed we were. Carol and Jim run the local bar, the.Pylonas Arms and all were very friendly. The supermarket just before turning into Pylonas village catered for most of our needs and produces fresh bread throughout the day.

Great snorkelling is to be had at St Pauls Bay ..just the other side of Lindos town ..a 5-10 minute car drive. We would go early morning and have a coffee at the little taverna after..lovely way to spend the morning. We used the car a great deal and drove all over the island. There is lots to see. Rhodes town is worth a visit by day and by night...its an hour by car but worth it. Many beaches are only a short drive away.

Our twin girls loved it , theyre 12 going on 21 !! They really loved the pool, the Greek people, the food (never had a bad meal out) and the chance to escape the heat and watch a good movie ( from the excellent selection) in the cool and comfy lounge ..and on a 42" screen .

We had a lovely holiday at Villa Maya and were sad to leave but hope to return one day. Thank you to all who made our stay so enjoyable.

Thank you so much for posting this review, it's always nice to be appreciated ! In return we'd like to say that you were a joy to have as guests and we hope to see you again in the future.
