BookThe Famagusta region
Once an area of scrubland on a narrow coastal plain between Cape Greco and Paralimni, Protaras is now a modern resort boasting some of the islands finest beaches. With a shoreline of brilliant blue sea, small sheltered sandy bays and rugged cliffs, both sun worshippers and watersports enthusiasts are catered for. Lying between Paralimni and Protaras, is the smaller family oriented beach resort of Pernera, although smaller and quieter than neighbouring Protaras the resort still has plenty to offer.
The villa sits on a exclusive cul de sac tucked between the small sandy cove of Sirena Bay and the beach adjacent to the picturesque fishing harbour by the well known Golden Coast Hotel. With five restaurants, two snack bars and three mini markets within 800 metres of the villa, whether you choose to self cater or dine out your needs are met. For a more lively option the centre of Pernera is only 1.5 kilometres away and it is here that you will find a wide variety of restaurants offering both Cypriot and international cuisines and the sandy bay of Marlita Beach.
Although car hire is highly recommended for all our villas to help you make the most of your stay, there is a regular bus service that connects Paralimni to Ayia Napa via the resorts of Pernera and Protaras.
The increasingly popular Kapparis area, a little under 3 kms away, stretches from the town of Paralimni down towards the coast. The best beach in this area is Firemans Bay, a golden sand cove so named because local firefighters can occasionally be seen training there in the early morning! In the centre of Kapparis village, you will find a well stocked supermarket and a selection of restaurants, cafes and bars offering a good variety of low key entertainment.
Approximately 6.5 kms away, in the centre of Protaras is Fig Tree Bay the most well known beach in the area. With its clear and shallow turquoise sea and fine golden sand, this beach understandably appeals to both visitors and locals alike. By day Protaras is a sleepy beach resort, coming alive after dark and offering a wide range of friendly restaurants, cosy tavernas, bars and shopping opportunities to suit the whole family.
Ayia Napa (approximately 15 kilometres away) once a small fishing village was more recently promoted as a clubbers paradise with a varied and vibrant nightlife concentrated in the towns central square. Families are rediscovering the delights of the resort by steering away from the square and spending days on the beautiful blue flag beaches and mellow evenings strolling the pedestrianised harbour area and dining at one its selection of cafes and restaurants.
Take a break from the beaches and occupy your time by exploring the surrounding villages sprinkled with windmills and small churches. Dominating the Protaras area on a solitary rock outcrop is the chapel of the Prophet Elias. A climb of many steps is needed to reach the top of the hill, but worth it as you will be rewarded with an amazing view of the Protaras coastline. As the nearest town to the now deserted settlement of Famagusta, Deryneia is possibly best known for its view of the ghost town, which, once a major tourist resort, now lies empty.
Family activities in the area include the magic dancing water show with its spectacular 12 metre high fountains “dancing” to Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Greek music and an Ocean Aquarium which boasts more than 400 different species with the main attraction being the penguin house. Ayia Napa boasts the biggest themed waterpark in Europe with exhilarating rides providing fun and entertainment for all age groups.
Outdoor activities in the area include mini golf, water-sports, go-karting, horse riding and hiking or cycling along the network of nature trails and specialist cycle paths through the Cape Greco National Park.
The Protaras area
Pernera in Cyprus is probably not one of the best known resorts on the East coast but it is certainly one of the nicest. Nestling below a hill this pretty little town has plenty to offer and holiday makers return there year after year.
The main street sweeps right down to the sea front where there are several sandy bays protected by stone outcrops. These are perfect for bathing and snorkelling in the warm crystal clear Mediterranean waters. Being so well protected these bays are great for families with small children and there is plenty of shallow water for the little ones to paddle in. In essence Pernera is first and foremost a beach holiday resort and the bigger hotels actually front right onto the bays. Lovers of water sports will have plenty of activities to get their teeth into including wind surfing and water skiing to name just a couple.
If you fancy a Cyprus boat trip Pernera is the place to be with its bustling harbour you will be spoilt for choice. Everything from leisurely cruises to heart stopping power boat rides can be booked there. Or maybe you prefer to just relax and watch the world go by with a nice cool drink. If so there is a great waterfront cafe right on Penera harbour where you can take in that beautiful view over the Mediterranean Ocean. On clear days you can see right across to Famagusta and the peninsula of Northern Cyprus. Several organized sea fishing trips also sail from the harbour catering for all levels including first timers so you could even catch your own dinner.
The town of Paralimni has a number of popular shops ranging from Marks and Spencer to french supermarket Carrefour . Paralimni has a lovely town square with coffee bars where the locals spend evenings playing table games and children playing in the near by play area and fountain.

Very happy with Limnos 1, with the owners George & Janine, and with the local managers Wayne and Michelle. We travelled to Cyprus to celebrate my in-laws 40th wedding anniversary. There were nine of us in all, from the UK and from New Zealand, across three generations. Loved the house - it was great to have the unexpected extras like DVDs (even if not used!). Location was okay - the whole area seems to have sprung up post-1974 so we often had day trips to the North eg Famagusta and Salamis to enjoy Cyprus' varied history. NZ holiday houses are often self-clean so to be told we didn't have to do a massive end of stay clean was brilliant! So - the house, excellent, the area, okay. If it wasn't that I lived so far away in New Zealand I'd like to book again. |
