The Famagusta District
Standing at the crossroads of three continents Cyprus has a vibrant history, a perfect climate and the warmest welcome in the Mediterranean. It has been a British playground for many years offering the perfect combination of relaxation, water sports and exciting exploration along its beautiful coastline, for Northern Cyprus too, has its share of rich archaeological sites and medieval castles. It enjoys over 300 days of uninterrupted sunshine, clear blue unpolluted seas, the beauty of an unspoiled landscape and uncrowded beaches.
Famagusta is one of the most important, greatly fortified ports in the Mediterranean. To the north lie the ruins of the great city of Salamis, believed to have been founded in the 11th Century B.C. After the influences of the many conquering nations, including the Romans, the city was finally abandoned in 648 A.D. following the combined catastrophes of earthquakes and raids by Arab pirates. The population of Salamis then moved to Famagusta.
The spectacular ruins give a fascinating insight into long-lost civilizations and include a magnificent amphitheater, Roman baths, a gymnasium and royal tombs. Just inland from Famagusta are the church and monastery dedicated to St. Barnabas, the founder of the apostolic church in Cyprus in 45 A.D. The church of St. Barnabas is preserved to this day, and houses a wonderful collection of 18th century icons. The monastery cloisters now house an archaeological museum.
The city lies on the eastern coast in a bay between Capes Greco and Eloea, and possesses the deepest harbour in Cyprus. Famagusta, which means "buried in the sand", is descriptive of the silted mouth of the Pedieos River north of the town. It was founded by the Macedonian Egyptian King Ptolemy II (308-246 B.C.).
The city also houses the Sinan Pasha Mosque, once known as the St. Peter and St. Paul Church. Built between 1358 and 1360, like its larger neighbour it was converted to a mosque once the city was captured by Ottomans.
Protaras, the tranquil Mediterranean resort town on the Eastern coast of Cyprus, is known for its prime location on the magnificent Fig Tree Bay Beach. The blue pristine waters and fine golden sand of Fig Tree Bay is recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, continually rewarded with the prestigious Blue Flag Award, given only to the best seaside resorts. The majority of Protaras' visitors are from England, a convenient four-hour flight away.
On the back of the success of Ayia Napa (which is only a few km away), it has blossomed into a resort of hotels, hotel apartments, villas, restaurants, pubs and all sorts of facilities a modern holiday resort ought to have. Being quieter than Ayia Napa and having less of a club scene, it has a reputation of catering more for family and Cypriot tourism.
Cape Greco is a 10 minute drive from the centre of Protaras, and is considered one of the most beautiful places on the island. A picturesque Blue Flag beach, a mile east of Ayia Napa on the Protaras road, close to the dramatic, rugged coastline of Cavo Greco, a national forest park with excellent nature trails. Konnos is sheltered from the prevailing winds, despite its wide sweep. Admire the sunsets, and look out for the starfish in the amazingly clear water.

"Beautiful location, very well maintained, excellent facilities, left feeling totally relaxed"
The apartment is very well maintained and ideally located. The pools are lovely and I enjoyed a morning swim most days. All the fun of Protaras is within a 10 minute walk and Fig Tree Bay beach was gorgeous and again within a few mins walk. We found beautiful restaurants offering very high standards of food and service for around 10 euros for a main meal. We had a car for our stay which made food shopping and sightseeing very easy. I would recommend this apartment to anyone.
Thank you for your review and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Yes we also hire cars and apart from the great location near Fig Tree Bay Protaras, it's ideal to use as a base into Aiya Napa, Troodos and many more
