The East Slovakia / High Tatra Mountains region

The house is located in an exclusive development of wooden lodges on the confluence of the Bela and Vah rivers at the base of the sought after High Tatra mountains in Slovakia. The house enjoys extensive views to the mountains of Krivan and Bystra and is situated in a mixed forest of pine and hardwood only to be found at this particular altitude in the Tatras. To protect the mountains and their wildlife, some areas are closed to the public in the off-season but are always accessible with a guide.
Slovakia is cold in winter with typically five months of snow starting late October/ early November. Temperatures of 30 degrees are the norm in the summer, interspersed with spectacular mountain storms.
Slovakia is a fascinating mix of western-type lifestyle and east-European history and architecture. The loud speakers of communist times are still attached to many lamp posts, although announcements now are limited to local notifications of markets and celebrations. A Slovakian traditional meat-based menu can be found in most restaurants, as can an international choice. Make sure you have a bowl of cabbage soup while you are there, it’s so much better than it sounds.
Most Slovakians speak one or both of English and German and the locals are friendly and helpful. Slovakian people appreciate their leisure time and can regularly be found at the one of the many thermal pool complexes after work. They are keen walkers, skiers and sports people in general. Don’t be surprised to find people walking up the mountain to the ski resort as you trundle past in your car.
The Pribylina area
Only a few minutes walk from the house are the quaint village of Pribylina and the Open Air Museum which are both well worth a visit. The Orensnica restaurant, offering traditional Slovakian favourites including dumplings and pancakes, is just over a mile away on one of the many trails through the local woods leading up to the mountains. The celebrated 13th century Castle Hradok is found in the next village of Liptovsky Hradok and boasts an impressive international menu in sumptuous surroundings.
Hotel Permon, fifteen minutes drive away, has a large and particularly luxurious spa with swimming pool, tennis and bowling amongst other activities.
There are too many hiking routes to mention and all levels of walker are catered for. Try the local lake at Strbske Pleso for a good base to start. Other activities such as boating can also be found here and it is a popular cross-country ski area in the winter.

Everything was just perfect! We had everything we could dream about! Perfect location, quiet place on the bank of the river, comfortable and perfectly equipped house! House is very spacious, especially hall and the kitchen zone, if you are looking for accomodation for a big company - it's definitely for you! Thanks a lot for the owners for all, we will surely come back one day! |

We had a fabulous time at the lodge and the surrounding area. Jackie was so helpful prior to leaving this country, giving us helpful tips and suggestions.Nothing was too much for Martin,he has made everything so much easier and run so smoothly. The skiing was still good and the instructor was wonderful with all the novice skiers (from 4 to 40+!). The food at the hotel Ostradok was well worth it too. The water park at Tatralandia was worth a visit. We could not manage to do all that we wanted to do in the week that we had. The villa was spotlessly clean, with everything being provided. We managed to use the fire pit to toast marshmallows and even had an Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday in the beautiful space outside. We flew in Krakow airport and would recommend spending some time in this beautiful city. I, and my family would recommend this to anyone. |

Well-managed, superb holiday rental. Peaceful location in woods by a river. Owners very helpful. Local English-speaking contact could not do enough to ensure a relaxing stay. World class downhill skiing at nearby Jasna, local cross-country skiing, dog-sledding, ski touring, hot springs, nearby quality restaurants.........or curl up by the woodburner with a good book. |
Guestbook for Tatras Lodge
Paul Maddox (stayed 22 - 30 January 2011) says:
Just wanted to say thank you for an amazing time at your place. We all had an absolutely cracking time and loved Slovakia as a whole but especially the tatras. None of us could believe how big also how well kitted out your place was. It was so nice to have nice fresh bedding/towels waiting for us and nice kitchen equipment to cook with etc. It's the little touches that really made a difference :) Compared to 99% of the people we met and spoke to that were staying in ski accomodation in Jasna itself the difference between the quality was like night and day.
Antonia Banks (stayed 2 to 7 February 2011) says:
What a truly amazing place indoor and out! We had the best time ever on an activity break! 8 of us cross country skiing (breathtaking) and spa -ing (not to be missed -a very slavakian experience) .Can't recommend more highly if you want to exercise and relax , have a laugh oh and experience another culture and much much more!
I hope we'll get to see what Pribylina looks like in the summer sometime soon.
Emma Brennan (stayed 2 to 7 February 2011) says:
What a fantastic holiday we had in this perfect setting. There is so much to do in the surrounding area - tranquil walks, skiing, swimming......but nothing beats returning to the house and curling up in front of a roaring fire. Can't wait to go back.
Austen Pickles (stayed June 2009 and February 2010) says:
The house is simply stunning, spacious and well-kitted out. But it's the location which really sets it apart. The garden leads right down to the river which is like having your own private paddling pool in the summer and the braver of us used it as a plunge pool in the winter before toasting ourselves in front of the wood burning stove. I've been twice and I'd definitely go again.
Nick Goring (stayed September 2009) says:
Great location. Superb accommodation. The perfect place for a really memorable holiday.
Emma Bootham " A fabulous location for families to either just chill out in luxury or get out into the mountains. What we loved was that this is truly an undiscovered gem only 2 hours from the UK and as a result everything is extremely affordable. Would thoroughly recommend" (Dec 2010)
