The Piedmont region
Italian lake holidays are perfect for a truly magical holiday. No other destination in Europe combines the breathtaking scenery, picturesque villages and romantic atmosphere quite like the Italian lakes. Of these, Lake Orta and Maggiore are the best.
Easily accessible from Milan via the motorway, it is a perfect gateway to relax from the stresses of day to day life and experience Italian Alpine life. Lake Orta offers plenty of opportunities both for the lovers of a tranquil beach holiday in the summer, including sightseeing, shopping and summer mountain sports, aswell as for the lovers of winter mountain sports or just those wanting to relax.
The temperature is warm from spring to autumn whilst cold in the winter. During the winter months it is surrounded by snow, Christmas markets and plenty of skiing opportunities. It won't disappoint you!!
Lake Orta (Italian: Lago d’Orta) is a lake in the north of Italy, west of Lake Maggiore.
"There is a code of silence that surrounds Lake Orta in northern Italy. Visitors are reluctant to tell others about its beauty for fear of increasing … well, the number of visitors. Indeed, it is astonishing how few people – even Italians – know about the place, and it is telling that the Milanese call it La Cenerentola (Cinderella) because they have long considered it the secretly superior sibling to the larger, money-blighted lakes of Como and Maggiore. But, for me, what sets Orta apart is not its beauty – though the place is absurdly pretty – but the lake's mysterious, ethereal, almost supernatural quality. There is something for the soul there as well as for the eye".
From The Guardian, http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2012/mar/09/italy-lake-orta-unspoilt
It has been named Lago Orta since the 16th century, but was previously called the Lago di San Giulio, after Saint Julius (4th century), the Patron Saint of the region. Its scenery is characteristically Italian, while the San Giulio island has some very picturesque buildings, and takes its name from the local saint, Julius of Novara, who lived in the 4th century.
- Church of Sant'Ambrogio.
This is a late-Romanesque building with a nave and two aisle, with side chapels. The bell tower is medieval. The interior is now in a Baroque style, and is home to an altarpiece by Fermo Stella da Caravaggio (1547) and an urn with the relics of Sant Vito.
- Ponte Antico
A 15th century ancient Bridge over the Strona river.
- Porta della Valle ("Valley Gate", c. 1100 AD), also known as Porta Romana.
This is the only surviving gate among the five medieval gates of Omegna.
- Alessi Factory

ORTA S. GIULIO
The town itself is built on a hill overlooking the lake which juts out from the eastern bank of Lake Orta close to the Island San Giulio. It is well known for the nearby Sacro Monte Monestry, which is a site of pilgrimage and worship and, like the town itself and the island, is a popular destination. In 2003, the Sacro Monte of Orta was put on the World Heritage List by UNESCO.
MOTTARONE SKI RESORT
The Mottarone mountain is situated between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta and is considered one of the most beautiful natural balconies in the whole of the Piedmont and the north of Italy. Its location allows the tourist to gaze over a 360° view, from the Po Valley to the summits of the Alps covering the view of seven lakes (Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, Lake Mergozzo, Lake Varese, Lake Camabbio, Lake Monate, Lake Biandronno).
The Mottarone is not only a breathtaking view, but also offers plenty to do in every season: it's possible to take part in winter sports and summer sports which include trekking, hand-gliding and descending from the top of the mountain by bike, which can be rented on the day. You can also enjoy trying a range of typical regional menus from a number of bar / restaurants which offer a cosy Alpine feel.
DOMOBIANCA Ski Resort (50 mins drive)
The ski runs of Domobianca, a ski resort situated just 15 minutes drive from Domodossola, wind from Alpe Lusentino to the 1900 metres of the peak of the Moncucco, with a difference in altitude of about 1000 m. It is a locality which offers a unique panorama, stretching as far as Monte Rosa, where one can ski along approximately 20 km of ski runs covered entirely by a modern artificial snow system. Moreover, all the runs are approved for the organisation of regional and national competitions. Domobianca also has an automatic timing system and a nocturnal illumination system, which covers the whole of a 3 km long ski run with a difference in altitude of 600 m. There is a small snowpark at the top of the Moncucco

"Restful, Well equipped, perfect setting for perfect holiday."
We were recommended Villa Fortis by friends - and we were not at all disappointed! - The apartment is airy and spacious, well equipped (kitchen in particular has all necessary equipment) and with views to die for. -The Balcony is a marvelous bonus - and was where we chose to do our eating and lounging around... allowing us to feel at home outdoors as well as indoors. -Roberto and family were most welcoming and made us feel very much at home. -Finally, the area is simply great and just across the lake is an outdoor family swimming pool which also offers access to lake swimming and rental of canoes.
It was great meeting you and see that you enjoyed your stay with us...you are welcome to come back anytime!!!

"A wonderful relaxing holiday with my wife"
we decided to drive to the villa and use the journey as part of the holiday experience, this we also recommend !! on arrival we were greeted by Roberto and his wife Ensa who immediately welcomed us with a wonderful friendly greeting along with the offering of fresh salad and herbs and spices from Roberto's garden. we were shown to the apartment, arms laden with fresh produce and Roberto's sister went thru the apartment and facilities - excellently presented along with the facilities being aired and pleasantly perfumed - my wife wanted to get all her washing done so it all had the same aroma !!! we didn't venture too far over the week as the journey was long enough to get to the apartment, but we visited Orta and spent a lot of time in Omegna which we found very reasonably priced. All in all we would highly recommend this as a wonderful relaxing holiday with beautiful scenery and friendly people-there is a lido available directly across the lake from the apartment - this can be seen using binoculars supplied by owner - it has 2 outside pools and all necessary facilities included. to finalise we had a wonderful holiday - with stunning views - we hope to come again and recommend to friends and family
Thank you very much Chris for your nice review, we really enjoyed having you and your wife with us and would be delighted to welcome you back anytime in the future!

"Welcoming apartment with stunning views"
We received a very warm welcome on arrival and a apartment exceeded our expectations, on size, comfort and facilities. The views were wonderful and no photo can do it justice. It feels very relaxing, chilled out within 10 minutes of arriving. The family made us feel extremely welcome and when we left we felt more like friends. Can't wait to go back next year.
It was an absolute pleasure...we are looking forward having you next year! Thanks a lot!!!

"Villa Fortis exceeded our expectations"
On arrival we received a warm welcome from Roberto and his sister Luigiana (who speaks English). The apartment was light and spacious and the views of the lake and mountains from the kitchen and living room were spectacular. We particularly enjoyed sitting on the large balcony in the afternoon sun, sipping on a glass of Italian wine and taking in the magnificent views. We also thoroughly enjoyed conversing with Roberto as he worked in his garden below.
Dear Brian Thank you very much for your fantastic review we really loved to have you and your wife in our flat coming from the other side of the world! Take care Fortis Family

"Huge apartment, good value for money"
The owners were very friendly and there to greet us when we arrived. They even gave us fresh vegetables from their vegetable garden which made a lovely pasta sauce and a salad! The apartment is huge with a big balcony overlooking Lake Orta, although there are roads between the apartment and the lake which we hadn't realised, but it didn't really bother us. Free parking is provided. The apartment is a bit dated and could do with less ornaments and other things which make it seem a little cluttered, but it is clean and has everything you need. Great location if you want to explore Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore. The walk to Omegna is longer than we expected, over 30 minutes, but doable and a great thing about the area is that it is not packed with tourists, like Lake Maggiore which we also visited.
Thanks for your review, we are happy that you had a nice time in our apartment. We are doing some improvements to the apartment to make it look even more modern. Hopefully we will have you to stay with us again.

"View to die for"
Fantastic villa in a fantastic location with a view to die for. The owners were great and very understanding as we arrived a day later than expected. A smaller lake but far more beautiful than the larger ones and without the crowds.
Thank you very much for your fantastic review!

"Great apt & area lovely sitting on the balcony watching the sun go down"
Great spacious appartment, with views over the lake. In summer the flowers in the garden are fantastic. The owners provided some beautiful fresh tomatoes and salad items. Fantastic holiday swimming in the lakes lots to see and do. Milan is only an hours train ride away. Seriously considering going again.
Thank you very much for your great review.

"Fabulous appartment, friendly hosts"
A very well equiped appartment with good kitchen, two large bedrooms, large living room and a balcony overlooking the lake. Only 5 minutes to Omegna and 20 to Stresa or Orta. Beautiful area and friendly hosts who would do anything to help. Fresh homegrown vegetables and the best tomatoes ever were provided throughout the week ! Well worth the trip.
Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review

We loved staying at Villa Fortis and would gladly stay there again. The location was great for exploring Lakes Orta and Maggiore and we particularly loved the view from the balcony which gave the apartment a real garden feel. The apartment balcony and gardens were filled with flower baskets, to great visual effect - it was like staying in a little oasis. Also, it was very handy having two bathrooms, plus an indoor and outdoor dining table. The owner's parents who showed us around were very friendly and helpful - we couldn't have asked for a nicer welcome. There are occasional trains going past, but these didn't bother us at all. In fact, we quite enjoyed watching them.
Thank you so much for your nice words about our aprtment, we hope to see you soon with us.
