The Svealand region
The cottage is located in the middle of the Stockholm archipelago yet on the mainland with easy car access. One hours drive from Stockholm. Stockholm is a beautiful capital built on 14 islands linked together by 57 bridges. Here you find lots of historic sites, opera houses, museums (including the world famous completely intact Wasa warship from 1628 as well as the new Photography museum) and of course restaurants and shopping. Be sure to see the old town and the City Hall where the Nobel price dinner is held each year. In central Stockholm there is a nice amusement park (Gröna Lund) located right on the water. There is also a very large combined zoo/outdoor cultural museum called Skansen located next to the amusement park. Stockholm has 1,4 million inhabitants.
One hour from the cottage is also the University town of Uppsala. Uppsala´s cathedral is the biggest church structure in Sweden. The large university here is over 500 years old. In Uppsala you can visit the Viking Museum and the big Viking Hills (graves where Viking kings found their final rest along with their ship). Another interesting place outside Uppsala is the home of Carl von Linné (1770-1778). Linné is one of the fathers of modern ecology and he is known as the father of modern taxonomy.
15 min drive from the cottage is the costal town of Norrtälje with many restaurants, bars/pubs, lots of stores, historic court house, playgrounds, public tennis courts, hospital, guest harbour. Norrtälje has a population of 18 000 and is a popular summer resort among Stockholm locals. The town has one of Sweden´s best cheese stores.
14 km from the cottage you also find Furusund (summer home of famous authors August Strindberg and Astrid Lindgren who wrote Pippi Longstocking). From here you can take day-trips on passenger boats to the outer islands in the Stockholm archipelago.
In the harbour of Kappelskär (20 min drive from cottage) there are several large ferries for taking day-trips to Åland ( Finland´s largest island, the people here speaks Swedish and have their own local parliament).
Distance from cottage to the historic Penningby castle is 4 km. Historic Wira Bruk, iron-works founded in 1630, is located 25 km from cottage. Nice to walk around along the small river and old houses. They also have a small museum and museum shop.
