Centrally located Umbria offers a strategic position, acting both as a north / south crossroad, to start your visit of the Italy's northern and southern most beautiful spots. It is a region of great natural beauty (Marmore waterfalls) but it also has fine traditions and a rich cultural heritage that can be seen in its beautiful towns and medieval villages, such as Orvieto, Assisi, Perugia, Trevi, Gubbio, Spoleto and the less famous and surely more peaceful town of Narni. Umbria produces fine wine, excellent oil, black truffles, chocolate, pastries and many other culinary speciality.
Events in Umbria:
- the Gaite Fair in Bevagna where old crafts are brought back to life (at the end of June )
- the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia and the Two World Festival in Spoleto (July )
- "Corsa all'Anello" (April / May) is a full recreation of the atmosphere of 1371, year of the first written city laws
- Black Festival (end of August ) a musical session of soul, jazz and gospel concerts.
Umbria has always been theatre for famous movie shooting such as the Oscar winning 'Life is Beautiful' of Roberto Benigni which was shot in Papigno near Terni,.
Umbria sure to be a region that will remain in your heart.
The Narni / Borgheria area
Narni, geographic centre of Italy, is a typical Umbrian town, built on a hill with impressive medieval remains.
Narni offers artistic, archaeological and religious itineraries, plus an abundance of natural history for the tourist.
Originally a Neolithic site, then Narni was a Roman colony under the name of Narnia.
After the construction of the Via Flaminia from Rome to Rimini on the Adriatic coast, Narni became of major importance and had to be heavily fortified.
Narni's strategic position, standing as it does above the deep gorge of the River Nera, has made it a target for many invading and barbarian forces. Many artists of the Renaissance period produced works for clients and patrons in Narni: Rossellino, Ghiriandaio (there is an altarpiece in the Civic Museum), Gozzoli, Vecchietta, Antoniazzo Romano and Spagna.
Many famous people have been born in Nami, including: the Roman emperor M. C. Nerva, Galeotto Marzio and S. Cassio.
Worth seeing :
Piazza Garibaldi, the Cathedral, the Church of San Francesco (13th century), Palazzo dei Priori (Priori Palace) (1275), Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) (1273), Church of Santa Maria Impensole (1175), Garden of San Bernardo for the outstanding views over the River Nera valley, Underground of San Domenico (13th century) where you can see a prison from the Inquisition's times, Albornoz Castle (1370), the Civic Museum, the Fonte di Feronia, the Ponte d'Augusto (27 B.C. that was painted by Corot and the paint is at the Louvre Museum in Paris) and many other interesting sites.
At 18 km from Narni you can visit the Franciscan hermitage (Sacro Speco) founded in 1213 by the Saint himself. It still preserves the franciscan atmosphere and its pure architectural lines. The frescoes date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
Closer to Borgheria, where the villa is located, there are the beautiful early Romanic Church of Saint Pudenziana: (11th century) (noteworthy are, the little porch, the bell tower and the outside apse, the frescos and crypta) and the Church of Saint Michele Arcangelo: a 12th century church, enlarged in the 14th century (Romanic style with noteworthy frescoes in the interior.). In addition, almost forgotten in the countryside near Narni, there are the ruins of Carsulae, an ancient Roman city, where there are still visible two temples, a theatre, several monumental tombs and the remains of various homes and an ampitheatre, all dating from the reign of Caesar Augustus.
The Chronicle of Narnia
Narni in the last years has acquired major fame thanks to the fantasy best-seller "The Chronicle of Narnia". The author C.S. Lewis gave probably this title to his work finding inspiration from his knowledge of Latin literature. But the writer stayed in Narni and in his writings can be found elements connected to some symbols of the town such as the griffin, the stone lion and the ancient sacrificial stone.
Nowadays Narni is also famous for the following appointments:
- "Corsa all'Anello" (April / May) is a full recreation of the atmosphere of 1371, year of the first written city laws
- Black Festival (end of August ) a musical session of soul, jazz and gospel concerts (in Piazza dei Priori - Rocca Albornoz, on line reservation available @ www.narniblackfestival.it ).
