The Larnaca region
Boasting over 350 days of sunshire per year its no wonder that Cyprus prides itself on being a popular year round tourist destination. Even in winter months it is common to have over 6 hours of daily sunshine and temperatures as high as 22c.
The Larnaca district is found towards the south-east of the island. It is the home of the main international airport of Cyprus and Larnaca also houses the island’s second commercial port and boasts a large marina. The District is one of the island’s major tourist destinations with around 3 million tourists visiting the island each year.
Larnaca is the oldest city of Cyprus, originally known as Kition or Kittium, and is believed to have been founded by Noah’s great-grandson Kittim. Unlike the other ancient cities of Cyprus, Larnaca still exists on the original site which dates back over 6000 years. Larnaca has a rich cultural heritage that can be traced back to the arrival of the Mycenaean Greeks in the 13th century BC when it was a rich seaport and a major centre of the copper trade.
Recent excavations have unearthed remains from that period including the Cyclopean walls and a complex of Mycenaean temples. The Byzantine period also left its mark on the landscape through the construction of many interesting monuments including the basilica of Saint Lazarus, dated from the 9th Century AD, the marble bust of Zeno, the underground chapel of Ayia Phaneromeni, which is said to have magical healing properties and possibly dates back to the Phoenician times.
Mazotos is a picturesque and very affluent village which has a beach, a popular camel and amusement park (where you can ride the camels) and has children's amusements, two supermarkets, three restaurants and a taverna. In the vicinity are a wide variety of beaches, and restaurants which cater for all tastes. Dreamland children's amusement park is a 8 minute drive, and entrance is free.
Larnaca is an easy 20 minute drive from the apartment and has attractive beaches and a wide variety of restaurants, particularly along the picturesque seafront. In addition to the wide variety of historical sites and museums, activities available include diving, fishing, boat and submarine trips, go-karting, bowling and cinemas. Shopping is excellent with a variety of local and international shops including Debenhams and Next.
Limassol, Nicosia and Ayia Napa are all within easy reach and all have a wide range of attractions including world heritage sites, ancient neolithic and roman remains (including an ampitheatre), castles, ancient churches, a zoo, water and amusement parks and a wide range of restaurants. There really is something for everyone.
