Northern Croatia region

Northern Croatia is a delight for discerning travellers who do not want to compete with the hoards on the coast. Tourism here is completely underdeveloped: your experience will be of personal encounters with local vineyard owners and farmers and discovery of rivers and hills where will find yourself the only explorer !

This is a hilly landscape dotted with grand manors and castles from when N. Croatia was at the heart of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The lush mountains are full of fortifications which were built to withstand the Mongols in the 13th century and then reinforced to repel the soldiers of the Ottoman Empire . . . always the front line between East and West, Christendom and Islam.

Flowing through the region is the Drava River, a hotspot of rare habitats, so precious that it now protected by the world's first 5 nation Biosphere Reserve.

Nestled up against the borders with Slovenia and Hungary, we are within a few hours drive of Budapest, Ljubljiana, Graz (UNESCO World Heritage site), Maribor (European City of Culture 2012)and course, just an hour from our capital citz, Zagreb. Varazdin is within a few hours of the stunning Plitvice Lakes (UNESCO World Heritage site), Lonjsko Polje Wetland reserve ~ with houses and lifestyles that reflect life in Central Europe 200 years ago. Visit Lake Heviz, one of the world's largest thermal lakes for a luxurious spa day.

Spring and early summer are delightful . . gently warm in April and comfortable in May. June and July are usually dry and . August can reach 35~40C. Sept~end Oct is usually great weather. Winter is a time of snow, mulled wine and roaring fires.

Marusevec

The nearby town of Varaždin is one of the best preserved baroque towns in Central Europe. Its grand palaces, delicately painted in pinks, blues and creams speak of its gracious, Imperial past. Vž has two great cultural festivals - www.spancirfest.com - 10 days of free music and street theatre at the end of August and www.vbv.hr, a world class celebration of early classical music staged in baroque palaces and churches at the end of September.

Surrounding Varaždin are hills which are full of small, family run vineyards. Many producers are regional award winners and a few even have gold and silver awards from Decanter, the intl wine festival. The best wines are cool climate white wines, the very best are winter ice wines !

There is challenging rock-climbing at Kalnik, a 13th century fortress built into cliffs ~ canoeing down the Drava: enjoy swimming and bankside picnic ~ hiking or horse-riding into the hills and forests, past castle ruins and vineyards ~ hire bikes !

"The most Perfect and idyllic stay"

A beautifully presented oak house in the middle of a little rural village in Northern Croatia, just what I want after working 50 hour weeks in the run up to my holiday. The house has 2 separate apartm… More
