Further details indoors

The pleasure of the house is that it is pretty, light, comfortable and spacious. It is simply decorated with some antique furniture, and has the feel of a relaxed family home. The kichen is huge with a long table specially made for it in the traditional style of the area. The kitchen has worktops made from a walnut tree from our property, a new 5 burner gas hob and a large multi-function oven. The living room has two sofas, chairs, a piano and keyboard, and a superb open fire which is lovely in the colder months of the year. It has double doors which open onto the large terrace. All bedrooms are large and comfortable. There is one double bedroom downstairs, with an en-suite bathroom, and the others are upstairs. The house has 2 staircases which makes it great fun to play games in!

Further details outdoors

If you like having plenty of outside space this is the house for you. It is also completely private as there are no other properties on site, so you have use of the grounds and pool all to yourself. There are gardens around the house, an orchard and grassland, and even a small wood - 7 acres in all. There's lots of garden furniture - a table and chairs on the terrace and another under the trees for the heat of the day. There are sun loungers at the pool. And a swing seat to sit in the shade and admire the view. Ropes and swings for the children hang from a lime tree. Children love playing in the little forest which is not big enough to get lost in but is where camps, houses and so on can be made and adventurous games devised. There is also a large sand pit and hammock under the trees. There is ample room in the gravelled courtyard for cars to park and turn.

The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region

La Tavellerie is in the Vendee Bocage. This is a hilly, wooded area and because it is unsuitable for huge fields and business farming methods, it has retained the charm of the traditional French countryside. The climate is reputedly the second best in France after the South of France. The summers are hot but not stiflingly so, and the winters mild on account of the gulf stream hitting the coast near by. The area is famous as a centre of the counter revolution in France. There are many interesting historical sites which are well managed and make an excellent day out.

The coast and fine beaches are an hour plus away, and the seafood the area is known for is well worth enjoying and easily bought at our excellent local supermarket. The chateau of the Loire make for a good day's outing. La Rochelle, an interesting, historic harbour town, is an hour and a quarter away, as is the famous Ile de Re.

France's no.1 theme park, Puy de Fou, 45 mins away, is a great day out. Rather than rides it is a series of truly spectacular 'spectacles' which tell the story of the area,on a grand scale, so for example to cover the Roman period there is a chariot race in a reconstructed Roman Amphitheatre!

La Caillere Saint-Hilaire

From our garden you can see the fortified tower called the Donjon at Bazoges en Pareds 3kms away. It is a lovely medieval remnant with medieval garden and local life museum attached. The Auberge next door is a good restaurant.

La Caillere, about 4 kilometers away is a charming village and has the basic shops, an excellent butcher, Spar etc. There are lots of walks marked out in the woods between us and La Caillere.

Fontenay le Comte, 25 mins away, is the old capital of the area and is full of old buildings, interesting walkways, a chateau and a museum. The traditional market on Saturdays is excellent.

Nearby is the ancient Mervent-Vouvant forest which is lovely for walks, horseriding (at Ripaud's stables near Vouvant) and there is also a great tree top adventure park in the forest near Mervent. Vouvant itself is well worth visiting - a very pretty town on a bend in the river with a tower supposedly built be the fairy Melusine in one night! The Pic Vert nearby is a great place for Galettes and a salad, in a lovely setting.

The Marais Poitevin with its quiet canals and little villages is 50mins away. In the summer there are special events in many old towns and Abbeys. Hiring a punt at Maillezais is a lovely way to see the green and peaceful network of canals.

"Wonderful, magical and fun."

We have stayed here several times - and each time we fall in love all over again, with the house, the serene and historic countryside, and the charm of small French village life. We stayed in wintertime and we love the traditional kitchen, enjoy cooking with our family and sitting around a fire outside or inside by the fireplace, or on the al fresco patio looking at the magnificent views across the Vendee. La Tavellerie is a warm and beckoning home, with all the charm of a period house in a beautiful location. The owners are attentive and the service has always been exemplary. We want to come back in the spring or summer and experience a different season, but we loved the winter and coziness of the house. One of the real joys for us was being able to connect with our family, without the distractions of television and noise. Country walks, exploring the historical villages and ancient sites, and of course, wonderful French food and wine, were the highlights of our visits.
