Lakeview Villa, Koggala Lake
Villa | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
Ideal for family reunions, groups of friends or anyone wanting a relaxing getaway. The villa is situated in a stunningly beautiful location on a hillside overlooking Koggala lake, just over a mile from the beach and 20mins from Galle, but in total tranquillity, far away from the noise and crowds. Set in a 1.5 acre garden, at the end of a finger of land extending into the lake, it is accessed via a 200m single track through the cinnamon plantations which are the only neighbours. A comprehensive set of photos taken by the owners is also available on request.
The villa is fully staffed and our villa manageress, Sonali, speaks excellent English and will ensure you have a wonderful time. She is also an exceptional cook and will prepare all your meals and shop for you, if you wish. All dietary requirements and preferences can be catered for. Meals are not included in the rental price, but the only additional cost is for the ingredients and transport, so you can eat and drink what and when you like at a fraction of restaurant prices.
Completed in mid 2012 gaining a National Construction Association award, using antique doors and windows, the villa is a mix of traditional charm and modern comforts, laid out to maximise the glorious views across the lake. The villa was designed to be naturally ventilated, benefiting from a 8-15m elevation over the lake and its cooling breeze.
Entering the property you have fantastic views across the infinity swimming pool to the lake and the extensive garden which surrounds the villa. The main living room has a comfortable sitting area with 3 large daybeds, cool polished cement flooring and grand staircase going up to the first floor. The fully equipped kitchen with 2 large fridges is accessed through an archway while the other end of the sitting room leads you to an air-conditioned cinema room with an LCD HD projector which provides a 120inch screen, extensive hard drive film library and surround sound system with a DVD player. There is also a range of games and plenty of reading material. 4G WiFi is also included.
Panel doors open out from the kitchen and sitting room onto the 20m veranda which forms the main outdoor dining room and living area. The dining table comfortably seats 10 and the seating area has plenty of loungers, chairs and a large coffee table, all overlooking the 15m x 7m infinity pool. All outdoor floor surfaces (including the inviting pale green slate of the pool) have been chosen for comfort and are non-slip under your bare feet.
All four bedrooms have views of the lake and have large ensuite walk in shower rooms. Two are located upstairs, offering a panorama of the whole lake. The master bedroom (7.5 x 6 m) has wooden flooring re-laid from two antique houses, while bedroom two (5m x 4m) has a polished cement floor. Both rooms have 4 poster superking size (6ft wide) beds and overhead fans. They share a vast balcony with built in seating to either end and a wooden balconied central area with wooden loungers which forms the perfect spot to relax and take in your beautiful surroundings.
The third bedroom (5 x 4 m) has its own veranda and sits alongside the pool. It has 2 single four poster beds that can be joined to form a superking size bed if required and ceiling fan.
The fourth bedroom (5 x 4 m) is situated garden side, offering a particularly private location closer to the lake and has a private veranda and seating, superking size four poster bed and ceiling fan.
All bedrooms have lockable wardrobes and there is a wall safe in the main bedroom.
Wheelchair access is possible to ground floor. Bed 3, Lounge, Kitchen, Cinema room, Dining area and Veranda are on a single level. All doors are doubles and the carport is linked to main house by a flat path.
The garden attracts a variety of colourful birds from kingfishers to a pair of peacocks which roost in one of the many trees. Monkeys and monitor lizards are regular visitors and a special attraction is the evening fly-past of hundreds of fruit bats, as they circle the lake on their nightly flight to the inland jungle to feed. On a clear night the lack of light pollution makes stargazing a must.
Chill by the lake and call out to the local fishermen for their catch of prawns, fish and crab and have Sonali prepare them for you. Walk down the cinnamon track and along the road to the long, sandy beach (around 25 minutes), stopping to chat with the local schoolchildren. If you can tear yourself away from the villa, the World Heritage site Galle fort is about a 20 minute drive away and makes an enjoyable day out. Whale watching, diving & snorkelling, temples, wildlife safaris, beaches, shopping and restaurants are all easily accessible and transport will be arranged on request.

"Garden of Eden!"
We had a wonderful fortnight at Lakeview Villa and it was everything we hoped it would be and more. We were a party of 8 which included 3 small children who were constantly entertained by the pool, the wildlife and the cinema room! The house is amazingly spacious and comfortable and we had a very relaxing and harmonious time. Sonali and Lasantha are excellent hosts and the food that Sonali made for us each day was exceptional. The house is surrounded by nature, set in a landscaped tropical gardens with stunning views especially at sunset. It is slightly remote though this I think, is part of it's charm. It is still only a few k from some great surfing beaches and not too far from Galle! Truly a peaceful place! We'll be back!

"A wonderful location with a fantastic housekeeper"
As a family of 7 we stayed for two weeks in what can only be described as a beautiful house, making the most of the lake views, the forests and animal life. It delivers on everything it advertises.
However, what 'made' the holiday? The housekeeper Sonali. What a fantastic cook, she managed to cater for my 5 difficult-eating kids; as well as my wife and I's appetite for fresh seafood, curry and fruit-filled breakfasts. The taste of the fresh lake crab delivered by the fisherman and cooked by Sonali still lingers. I have also treated my wife to two home-made Sri Lankan curries since we got back (thanks to Sonali's recipes).
She made our stay relaxing, kitchen-free, cared for; and my children all miss her. They would all like to take a 'Sonali' home!
The gardens are beautifully tended by Rajah; he is always ready to take the kids and show them the wildlife (monitor lizards, monkeys, etc.) or help them climb the palms to gather palm nuts.
Sonali's relationships with the tuk-tuks and knowledge of the area was helpful and we always felt reassured that we could rely on her. She delivered on making our holiday as comfortable and restful as we wanted. Whils tthe house was stunning in every way.
It is great as a family retreat which gets you away from the busy hotels on the beaches; or a group of couples that want to party in private; or just a couple that want to be looked after and treated to fantastic food in a quiet luxurious setting.

My son booked this as a treat for us all for Christmas week. We hoped it would be comfortable...... it surpassed all expectations. Location was secluded, the views breathtaking, there was great comfort beautifully designed. Rooms all had mozzie nets and ceiling fans, en suites and spectacular views out over the large infinity pool and beyond over Koggala Lake.
The villa was fully staffed. We planned delicious meals, both Sri Lankan and European, with the charming housekeeper/cook and her husband and which we then ate in style out on the covered Verandah.
The staff arranged boat trips out on the lake for crocodile viewing, ordered tuk tusk when we wanted to go to the beach or sightseeing. Nothing was too much trouble.
We felt 100% safe and pampered.
We could have arranged massages at the villa but ran out of time!

"Stunning views in quiet and relaxing villa just 5 mins drive from beaches"
We had a wonderful 4 day stay at lakeview villa. The villa is a new build and is well equipped. The kitchen is wonderful and you can bring your own food to cook, or ask a the cook to prepare meals for you, she will go out and buy food too. A great and discrete butler looks after the house, closing the mosquito nets and closing the house in the evening.
The infinity pool looks over the lake and the balconies offer a chance to sit and relax while contemplating the stunning view and wildlife. We has peacocks strutting around most mornings. The bedrooms are spacious and ensuite, they have a fan but no a/c - although this is not needed and cool breezes flow through the house.
The villa is on the lake and we could use the jetty to go on a boat trip to the islands in the lake.
A fantastic get away and not far from the southern beaches.
