The Sri Lanka Southern Coast region

Galle lies on the south-west tip of Sri Lanka, 75 miles from Columbo. The town experiences a hot tropical climate, and the monthly temperature remains around 29C - 31C throughout the year, with monsoons from the Indian Ocean affecting the levels of rainfall and humidity.

Day Trips

The surrounding areas offer plenty of attractions such as paddy fields and lush plantations, all of which can be seen on scenic drives around the region. The bustling city of Columbo is accessible by taxi, train and bus, with other day trips including Kalutara Temple, the Yala Wildlife Sanctuary, and Koggala Lake, which is ideal for bird-watching, and home to a Museum of Folk, Art and Culture

The old town of Galle has plenty of opportunity for shopping, and in particular specialises in jewellery and gem-cutting, as well as selling plenty of fabrics, furnishings, and arts and crafts such as woodcarvings.

Koggala

Tarshush overlooks a rocky outcrop, with safe swimming a five-minute stroll along the bay. Numerous watersports are on offer in Unawatuna and Mirissa including sailing, fishing, coastal cruises, river trips, sea kayaking, snorkelling and boating. Dolphin and Whale watching is offered by Mirrisa Watersports from December to April. Koggala Lake, with its many tiny islands inhabited with several species of birds, is another wonderful experience. High on the headland of Unawatuna Bay is Rhumassala Temple. Walk around the headland through hidden villages and verdant jungle valleys eventually finding yourself on 'Jungle Beach' - a little known and secluded beach. Galle's historic 17th century Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is just 10 minutes away. Hours can be spent exploring the maze of narrow streets lined with Dutch and British period buildings, sturdy ramparts looking out to sea, and a growing collection of art galleries, antique shops, cafes and restaurants.

"All round awesome place"

absolutely recommend this place. The rooms are beautifully decorated with Antiques, the pool and garden are fabulous, the food was the best we ha in all of our trip and the surrounding areas really gave us true insight into rural life in Sri Lanka.

"Absolutely fabulous - we will be back."

Stunning beautifully furnished colonial house with four poster beds and wonderfully luxurious bathrooms, fabulous pool and gardens, and superb staff. The meals were out of this world (e.g. freshly caught prawns the size of lobsters on the bbq), the service fantastic, the children in their element with the pool, croquet, walks in the neighboring paddy fields and local villages, searching for peacocks etc. The beaches nearby are truly special, and Galle Forte itself a gem. We fell in love with Sri Lanka and will certainly be back.

"Mixed bag. Great house, average service"

The house is large and tastefully restored/expanded. The house is filled with curios and antiques. The garden and pool are well maintained. As we were told while booking, only 3 of the 5 bedrooms are … More

Dear Valued Customer,

We are thrilled to read you found the house to be great and tasteful. We also appreciate constructive comments.

Having discussed your views with the personnel in question, they would like to point out; they found your party of people difficult to manage, down to the fact they failed to leave the house and failed to leave the bedrooms between meals, thus, making it very difficult for 3 domestic staff to cook breakfast, lunch, dinner clean and tidy rooms for 11 guests .... who wouldn't !
Unfortunately you did experience regional power cuts for few hours during your stay ... inconvenient yes ... at the same time a great opportunity to explore the local area, beaches and discover more of this beautiful island.

Drawing parallels with holidays in mature tourist destinations such as Italy, France and Bali, we find rather humbling but a little research into recent events in Sri Lanka, would make these comparisons some what naive to say the least.

May we suggest, you return to Sri Lanka in a few years time and you may find the Asian Riviera, but for now, we live in authentic paradise, surrounded by gentle charming people who will not wake or trouble you, just to turn a bed,

Yours Sincerely,
Polheena management

"Stunning and luxurious - we will return!"

Polheena is a very special home away from home. Being a group of design snobs we appreciated the tasteful decor and minimal colour. It was very clean and comfortable - you can find a nice spot to re… More
