The Island of Ischia: Known as the Green Island because of its abundant flora, Ischia is also renowned for its exceptionally mild climate and therapeutic springs. Formed almost exclusively of volcanic rock, Ischia is the largest island in the Bay of Naples, offering sandy beaches, crystal clear sea, wooded mountainsides and much more. Walkers can explore coastal paths or the rugged terrain of Monte Epomeo -789 metres high. History enthusiasts will enjoy the Aragonese Castle at Ischia Ponte, the archaeological Museum at Lacco Ameno and other interesting historical sites. The island bus service is good, with frequent buses to all the main points of interest. Car-hire is reasonably priced and the characteristic little Microtaxis are plentiful. Although the British have frequented the Isle of Capri and the Sorrentine peninsular for many years, they seem to have only recently re-discovered Ischia and its delights. One particular local attraction is the spectacular and exotic garden 'La Mortella' garden
The Ischia Island / Forio area
Forio: The largest town on the island, Forio is full of interesting shops, excellent restaurants and numerous pavement cafés where you can sit and watch the world pass by over a coffee, aperitif or ice cream. There is a daily market and several good bookshops - W H Auden spent much of his time here, as did Henrik Ibsen and others. The town has a picturesque harbour full of fishing and sailing boats from where you can catch the hydrofoil to Naples or round-the-island pleasure trips. Adjacent to the harbour are the beautiful beaches of Chiaia and San Francesco with pale sand and crystal clear water. Just beyond is the exotic garden 'La Mortella' created by Lady Susana Walton, widow of the English composer Sir William Walton, with the help of the celebrated landscape architect Russell Page. This year is the centenary of Sir William who died in 1983, so his music and the garden have been much-featured recently in the media. Summer visitors to the garden from can enjoy free classical concerts.

Last December it took us only a few minutes to decide to go back to Ischia in the summer of 2011 . In 2010 we already had spent a wonderful holiday at Ischia. Ischia is a beautiful place with a lovely climate and with many possibilities for excursions on and around the island. There was also another reason to return even to the same location on Ischia: Villa Olivia In Forio d'Ischia. In 2010 we did experience the overwhelming hospitality of the Patalano family, the owners of Villa Olivia. Giuseppe is a talented linguist, he can switch without any effort from one into another language. For us is was quite special to hear him speak even some Dutch!. Very remarkable when you consider that knowledge of "foreign languages" is not common in Italy. For Giuseppe and his wife Ruth it never is too much trouble to be available for the guests and make them feel welcome. They give all kinds of tips and are always willing to help and advice. The accommodations at Villa Olivia offer exactly what you need: space, and everything you need to cook and sleep well. You can also ask for additional facilities. The extra costs for these additional facilities are acceptable and really quite normal. Those who are looking for a luxurious environment, with all included, won't feel at ease in Villa Olivia. Those who are looking for a beautiful place, who want to be surrounded by a beautiful, natural environment and who enjoy - in a small residence- to be able to meet an international company, who appreciate warm hospitality, will find in Villa Olivia just what they are looking for. Hidden rules? I have not met any. When you take a good look on the website of Villa Olivia, you find a picture of people wearing swimming hats while swimming in the beautiful pool at Villa Olivia. In many places on the island It appears to be quite common to wear a swimming hat in the pools and thermal baths. I personally am very pleased with that 'rule': it prevents possible unhygienic conditions. And I know only a single one for whom this "rule" is disturbing ... .. Villa Olivia: highly recommended! |

On arrival Guiseppe was very welcoming. We were impressed with the gardens and the setting and the lovely outdoor pool surrounded by comfortable sun loungers. The indoor pool was a bit small, but was like a bath, so was more like a plunge pool. The owners live in the villa which has around half a dozen lettable units. They are fairly private and ours had a lovely large terrace. The owners are on hand to give local information on buses / taxis / local amenities. There are 2 restaurants within a 5 minute walk away from town from the villa, the nearest being very nice (they are both only open during the evening). It is about a 10 minute walk to the very edge of the town and about 20-30 mins to the other side of town. The free part of the beach in the town is pretty small - in busy periods you may want to hire parasols / sunbeds at a cost of around 15 EUROS a day depending on the season. I think this is pretty standard in Italy though. On the downside I think the details for this property are misleading. The website says that there is a TV, phone, fax, toaster, iron, cooker, microwave, freezer, washing machine, lounge seating for 6. The accomodation was basic however and some of the above were provided only at an additional cost or were found only in the communal lounge where you will find the TV and phone / fax (I guess - I never tried). The very basic kitchen was equiped with a fridge, cupboards and a 2 ring calorgas hob and very few utensiils or plates, glasses etc. Anything more than this attracted an additional hire charge (eg, microwave, fans). No kettle!. The washing machine was in the outhouse and shared amongst all. The cost per wash was 3.50 EUROS. The bedrooms were sparsely decorated but clean and honestly provided nothing more than beds, bedside tales, bedside lights, chairs and a waredrobe. One final but important point is that the owners have a rule that you must wear a nylon swimming hat whilst using the pool for which you are expected to pay. We didn't use them and this didn't seem to go down too well. We enjoyed the holiday overall but would have preferred that they'd been upfront with the rules / additional costs. |
