The Sardinia region
To say it with the Sunday Times words:
“Sardinia is the Mediterranean answer to Caribbean beaches”. Right in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, it’s easy to see why this vast green island is for the Italians the most ambitious holiday destination. Well known for its heavenly white, long, sandy beaches with turquoise/green waters and a microclimate that makes the weather very mild all year through; this region has a lot to offer also to those intrigued by history, with the Nuragh prehistoric towers, Pre-Roman and Roman archaeological sites (Nora, Tharros etc.) and medieval towns such as Cagliari (capital of Sardinia) Oristano and Alghero. For those who love wine and food, this is paradise! Doc wines such as Vermentino or Cannonau are a good match for the vast, local, fresh sea food offer from lobsters to groupers, from submarines to sea urchins.
The traditional meat specialty is roasted pig all year through.?Pasta like, they offer an intriguing selection : malloreddus, culurgiones, ravioli with saffron and much more. For further details, please visit www.welcome-to-sardinia.com
Pula town is really nice and well known, with its white sandy beach (S. Efisios, 5 minutes driving from the apt), the archaeological area of Nora, and its Piazza with coffee shops, restaurants, shops and summer theatre. The ancient city of Nora is located on the furthest point of Cape Pula, in front of Pula town, surrounded by the sea, connected to the mainland by a tiny isthmus.
The name of the city derives from the root word “nur” the same as the one used for the ancient pre-historical Sardinian sites, the “Nuraghi” towers. In fact, many megalithic stones were discovered at Cape Pula and were used to build Nora city. Present and historic information can be found at www.pula.it.
Within 15 km from the resorts are some of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Sardinia (Nora, Chia, Tuerredda). White sand, long streched, crystal blue-green waters, the only one with origianal sand dunes in the meditterean. Deep water fishing and scuba diving facilities insites. But this spectacular coast does not end here. It goes west for otther 30 km with an incredible sequence of beaches and wonderful cosy bays.
Is Cannoneris -The biggest oak forest in Europe
10 minutes driving distance from the apt. there are Is Cannoneris and Guturu Mannu hills and forest (the largest forest in Sardinia), a protected area where you can have a walk and see deers and wild boars. You can even reach the forest by bycicle (get a look on http://www .aiosardegna.it/hellopula/happy/menhir.htm, they organize cycling tours in the forest area and elsewhere around Pula village).?The protected area is perfect for horse-riding and well-known for the high quality of myrtle and mushrooms. In this area lives a large community of deer and you can spot the golden eagle hovering in the air.
IS MOLAS Golf club
In the resort, at walking distance from the apt. there is Is Molas Golf Club, with its 27-hole golf course, technically demanding and simply spectacular. This golf course is one of the most famous in Italy and has been the benchmark for this sport in Sardinia for over thirty years.
Located in the sea proximity and protected by the surrounding hills, Is Molas enjoys a unique microclimate, mild and particularly suitable for golf players all year round: the temperature reaches 20 degrees C at the beginning of the spring, reaches 20 degrees C at the beginning of the spring, rises to over 30 in summer and even in December and January can easily exceed 15 degrees. ?
The golf course at Is Molas was the first in Sardinia and with its twenty-seven holes is the largest on the island. ?The eighteen holes of the championship course are the result of a co-operation of the Cotton, Pennink & Partners studio and Piero Mancinelli. The greens and bunkers are American in size and style, while the fairways are broad enough to forgive a slice. The Is Molas championship course is considered one of the most technically satisfying and spectacular courses not just in Italy but in the whole of the Mediterranean area. It has staged many prestigious competitions, including four Italian Opens and a European Volvo Master. ?The nine holes of the Yellow Course, the most difficult to play, have been laid out by Franco Piras, Gary Player Design’s representative in Italy. The presence, along the course, of all the typical species of Sardinia’s local flora and the Mediterranean “macchia” makes the Is Molas Golf Club a beautiful garden with sea view.
The Club House is elegant and well-equipped: there is a bar with a panoramic terrace, a pro shop and the Ristorante Is Molas, open at lunchtime and for special occasions, which offers a creative Mediterranean cuisine based on local Sardinian products. ?It is possible to hire a cart, set of clubs and other equipment. Is Molas is also the seat of the Dan Williamson Academy, where golf lessons and courses can be booked.
For those willing to travel by car, Cagliari just 30 km away offers the amenities of a big city within the charm of a small ancient town.
