The Svealand region
In English this means "warm land" and this part of Sweden is known for its warm and beautiful summers with long, long evenings and stunning landscape. All around are magical lakes and rivers for fishing, swimming or boating.
Local attractions include an 18-hole golf course, a mini-golf, a beach, a scenic 90km bike route alongside the Klarälven river, wildife parks, husky rides, activity centres, moose and other wildlife safaris, Folk museums, art galleries, restaurants and the all-year-round Ski Tunnel at Torsby. In summer there are festivals all over the region - everything from music to American Cars (a Swedish favourite!) Karlstad City is 90 km away, with all you would expect from a modern city.
Local heritage sites include the magical home of novelist and Nobel Prize Winner, Selma Lagerlöf, with its stunning permaculture garden. There is a bear park at Orsa and the little ones will enjoy a visit to Father Christmas's summer residence ("Tomten i Halla") at Forshaga.
This region is also well known for its iron works and steel industry, as well as the paper mills which are the signature of Varmland's industry even today.
Stjarnsfors (Star Rapids) was the home of the original founders of the iron mills here many centuries past. the "rapids" referred to in the name, is the place in the river you can see from the property, now a dam with a waterfall. This is where the logs would arrive from their culling in the local forests, to be channelled into the man-made canal at one side and taken downstream to the "Kvarn" to be processed for pulp. Nowadays you will now find a remarkable museum here - Stjarnsfors Kvarn - just a short walk from the house. After looking at the fascinating displays, visiting the art exhibition upstairs, or taking a cup of coffee at the museum café, you may want to hire one of their railway bike trolleys, and bike along the riverside railway track all the way to Hagfors and the Railway Museum, where, unlike in the UK, you can actually climb up into the engines and really feel what it's like to be on a steam train!
The local town, Hagfors, has 5 super markets and a number of restaurants, a mini-golf and a tourist office where you can find out about local fairs and festivals.
At Uddeholm (3 km) you will find a small local shop for essentials.
