"An amazing Sri Lankan Sri mathie experience that we will remember for a long time to come"
I wanted to have a Christmas holiday with my grown up globe trotting family and to do so we came together from three different continents at Sri Mathie villa . The villa is serenely beautiful and has been lovingly restored with style and imagination whilst preserving the traditional essence of a Sri Lankan villa. To say we had a wonderful time is an understatement. It has been the holiday experience of a lifetime, made all the more special by the wonderful warm hospitality of Suba and Gamine. Their kindness and willingness to do anything possible to make your stay a happy one knows no bounds, every special holiday needs a Suba and gamine. They are both amazing cooks...if you like good food this is the place for you. It has been a culinary extravaganza, sublime cuisine, wonderful curries, seafood and pizzas in an adobe garden oven, I think we have now tried every fruit and vegetable grown in Sri Lanka. And then there is the verandah ... From there you can watch monkeys , beautiful birds ,chipmunks ,bats and the occasional lizard and enjoy an evening gin and tonic...life doesn't get much better ! suman is seemingly always on hand to drive you where you want to go. My family really enjoyed the surf at welligama, the diving and snorkelling at Unawatuna and our safari trip.
Outstanding, amazing and just plain awesome sums up our thoughts on Sri Mathie.
Wonderful guests to have. Thank you. See you again.

"A little piece of heaven where you can just relax"
Sri Mathie is a wonderful old house that has been lovingly restored by the owners. My room was in the 'new wing' but you'd never know it was an addition. It melded into the original house perfectly.
I intended to go to the beach daily, exercise, and get some work done, but the minute I sat down in the planter's chair on the front porch, all those thoughts disappeared and I enjoyed just gazing out at the garden, catching glimpses of monkeys, parrots, chipmunks and of course the geckos!
We were greeted with a sweet lassi drink flavored with cardamon and it was delicious. The rest of the meals did not disappoint either. The housekeeper, Suba was very attentive but never intrusive. Her banana bread was delicious and it was the first place I'd stayed in Sri Lanka with really good coffee. For dinner we enjoyed wonderful curries, and pizza from a real pizza oven. There was also a French curd for desert that was out of this world.
If you can pull yourself away from the porch, the beach is only a few minutes away and Galle (25 minutes away by tuk tuk) is definitely worth a visit. You can also wander around the property where they grow pepper, avocado (I was given 5 to bring home) coconuts, and cinnamon.
If you are looking for a place to relax and just get away from it all, Sri Mathie is wonderful. And if you can't get away completely, there is internet access.

"A truly magical and tranquil fun place to stay....Loved it!"
We stayed at David's place for 11 days. Everything was sublime, the receptions was welcoming, the rooms were all beautifully decorated and the verandas were a real treat in the evening with a glass of wine of good stories to tell. The staff we're charming and always aspired to meet your every wish. We cooked together in the kitchen and shared recipes and tips on each other's cuisine; it was like being at home but on holiday, if that makes sense.
You can easily get about as David's has pretty much a private Rickshaw waiting at your disposal who can take you into town, down to the beaches etc. Everything you really need is no more than 15 mins away. The gardens are a delight and teeming with wildlife, including monkeys, lizards, snakes, and birds. You can also play snooker/pool and there is also the possibility for alfresco dining and BBQ's. Not to forget the interesting tour of the gardens which includes, rubber trees and the products, pepper plants, coconut trees, cows, mushroom cultivation etc.

Could not rave about the Sri Mathie villa enough. The location was brilliant and the surroundings of the villa were suburb. The villa itself was extremely clean and decked with all the mod cons you would expect. The real highlight for us was the staff. Suba and her family took such good care of us. The food was a real standout for us. Highly recommended.

"Lovely colonial villa with beautiful grounds and excellent service"
I stayed with a friend for one week at the Sri Mathie Villa. The villa, which is set in an old peaceful plantation, is beautifully restored. We were warmly looked after by the staff, the bedrooms are spacious, spotlessly clean and comfortable, and the cook is excellent. Their homemade organic yoghurt and curd made the breakfast one of the highlights of the day. There was nothing better than returning from the day's excursion to have a long drink on the quiet veranda before savouring the cook's delicious curries. The villa is conveniently located for interesting day trips to Galle, Yala National Park (where we so lucky as to see leopards), Buduruwagala Park with its amazing Buddha rock carvings, and local tea plantations. I will definitely return to Sri Mathie.
