Casa Nova D'en Borra (Masia).
About the home
Welcome to Casa Nova d'en Borra, a Catalan masia ideally situated just south of Girona, with easy access to Barcelona, the Costa Brava and France. Here we invite you to relax, unwind and to explore at your leisure - days can be as active or as lazy as you wish. We don't promise you anything but a fabulous house in a beautiful location and the chance to spend quality time with family and friends, to re-charge your batteries, to soak up the charm of Catalan life; a taste of the Mediterranean.
This renovated masia is a true home from home: traditional character; modern comfort; light and space; well decorated; well appointed. It has 6 comfortable bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a seperate ground floor toilet and generous living areas. Ideal for both small and large groups, whole house rental. Toddler and family friendly. WIFI. UK Sky Freesat TV. ES and CAT TV.
One of the true pleasures of Casa Nova d'en Borra is the large outside living space, the roofed porch, used all year round - it is the perfect area to relax, to enjoy summer living, a delicious barbecue, balmy nights, a winter lunch.
The masia faces south, with open views across the fields to our cork wood and hazelnut grove. The walled garden and pool enjoy the sun all day long; a true suntrap and the pool area is fenced so that you can relax whilst your children play. Outwith the masia garden are many additional areas in which to explore, to cycle, play, the challenge of a game of boules.
The masia is set within a private estate, secluded yet not isolated, a true rural escape. It is situated between two villages, and only a 15 minute drive into the charm of Girona city centre. Our nearest restaurants are in Sant Dalmai village, 2km, and at Brunyola, 3km. There are many restaurants and bars in the area: good food, great value, very welcoming and some with children's play areas. There is a large variety of supermarkets, local shops, weekly markets, organic shop, cafes, restaurants and bars all within a 10 minute drive of the masia.
We have the advantage of being close to Girona airport, but with no noise and little awareness of airplanes. There is good access to the AP-7 road and to the coast - our closest beaches are Platja d'Aro and S'Agaro.
Casa Nova D'en Borra, a private house, is owned and managed by Chris and Gill Colverson, previously of Le Cafe St. Honore restaurant in Edinburgh, Scotland. We take great pride in providing a comfortable, private house for you to enjoy. Owner managed, book with confidence. Please don't hesitate to contact us for further information.

Though there are no specific aids in the bedroom and bathroom, other than a shower stool and shower mat, there is reasonable access and we are happy to discuss any necessary equipment with you. One of our relatives uses a stick and wheelchair and they find the bedroom ideal when they visit.
Each outside door has one step up into the masia; the front door and inner door have double doors; once in the house the ground floor of the masia is all on one level; there is grass and crazy paving in the garden and porch areas and a slight slope from the double iron entry gates to the masia front door.

SUMMER HEAT - the masia has great thick walls to keep out the heat ( or to keep it in in winter ), shuttered windows, blinds, tiled and wooden floors with ceiling fans and/or floor fans in all bedrooms including the hall. The masia does remain cool in the summer - walk into the hall and feel the cool air - and we recommend that you shut all shutters to the front of the masia and the front door during daylight hours - it really does make a difference and keeps the masia superbly cool. Open shutters and windows at night to let the cooler evening air in. Use the side porch door for easy access from the masia and kitchen to the porch.
UTILITIES - There is constant hot water. Electricity, gasoil and gas bottles are included in the rental price. There is wood for the stove and bbq - and guests are welcome to collect additional cones and fallen branches from our wood for the bbq.
Further details outdoors:
The masia garden is walled to the front and fenced at the back with gates; a very private and secure area. The garden is lit by lights at night, and has ample cascading plants, olive trees, herbs, palms and shrubs. The area is a mix of grass and crazy paving. When in season, you can pick strawberries; early summer is the best time to pick mint for your mojito; sage, rosemary and thyme grow in abundance and Chris is delighted to supply you with fresh tomatoes, courgettes and other fabulous vegetables from his garden as they come into season.
The roofed porch faces south out to the pool and the hazelnut grove, and to the west and the sunset. There is a large traditional bbq, extendable wooden tables with ceiling fan above, a fridge, sink, dining chairs, sun loungers, easy chairs and parasols. Porch lights or enjoy dusky evenings by candlelight. There is a side door from the roofed porch area into the masia.
Outwith the walled masia garden there are great areas to play and to explore, or just to get away for a quiet moment or two - walk through the small fruit orchard, hazelnut grove, cork wood.
A selection of bats, balls, toys, games, books etc are available - and any pool accessories left by other guests. There are currently four bicycles available for your use. We also have a set of boules and a set of golf clubs if you wish to play one of the many golf courses in the area - please do ask.
There is a full information pack in the house regarding the masia and it's workings, activities in the area, festivals and markets, maps and guide books. We supply maps with local supermarket and shop information, where they are, opening times and what there is. There are also maps of our local restaurants and bars with a book of menus, prices and location "tried and tested", and we welcome your input and discoveries whilst visiting.
Further details
COST OF LVING -.
Some key elements here are much cheaper allowing you to get away, to enjoy the area without breaking the bank - a really good bottle of wine for 3 to 5 euros, or great quaffing wine from the bodega at 95 cents per litre. Vegetables, particularly from the local shops are great value, we have an organic shop locally, and we have a good choice of fish and meat at good prices. Foods here tend to be seasonal, people buy on a daily basis and there is a good choice of small shops, markets and larger supermarkets.
EATING OUT -
You can dine here as cheaply or as expensively as you wish, a simple sandwich to a celebratory meal, with many well known and recommended restaurants. Popular tourist areas can be more expensive, but eating locally is enjoyable and great value. Girona has a great choice of restaurants for all budgets and palates - El Celler de Can Roca, Casa Marieta, Italien restaurants, Creperies, cafes, sushi, tapas, fabulous pastry and ice cream shops.
Try a traditional lunchtime "Menu Diari" (Menu del Dia) - three courses with wine and water for 9 to 12 euros per person.
We enjoyed a menu diari with friends the other day. Three courses, wine and water were included in the 11 euro per person price. Coffees were extra. Total bill for 5 people - 60 euros. Well fed, delicious, busy restaurant - 2 minutes from the masia.
We had a recent lunchtime snack at one of our local bar-restaurants after a walk from the masia - 1 litre of water, 1 carafe of local red wine, 1 beer, 2 large jamon and cheese sandwiches, a packet of crisps and 2 coffees = 13 euros total, September 2011.
It is possible to eat well when out and about as a vegetarian in Catalonia. Barcelona has a large choice of vegetarian restaurants. We find that our local restaurants tend to be very helpful and starters can be turned into main courses, or meat left out of some of the dishes, though meat is a intrical part of many traditional fayre. Dishes include spinach cannelloni, some bean dishes, various salads, grilled asparagus, grilled vegetable platters, gaspacho, tortilla, Arros Cubana, ( rice, tomato sauce, poached or fried egg), coca ( Catalan pizza ), a traditional ratatouille, and various seasonal specialities. Tapas is a great source of vegetarian options and most bars and cafes serve a good selection of sandwiches at any time of day.
Restaurants are very children friendly and welcoming.
Dogs are usually welcome on outside terraces.

BookThe Costa Brava/Catalonia/Barcelona region
A fantastic destination with something for everybody - for those that wish to travel and to explore, to discover the world of Salvador Dali, the charm of Girona, cosmopolitan buzz of Barcelona, medieval villages, culture, water parks, karting, pitch and putt, golf, local cuisine, open beaches, craggy coves or just to relax at the masia. Our location allows you to take a day trip, to experience Catalunya, and to return to the masia to enjoy a delicious barbecue.
Catalonia is a region of varied landscape - the rugged Costa Brava coast, hilltop towns, Pyrenees in the distance, volcanic Garrotxa, flat open verdant plains, undulating green landscape dotted with fruit trees, sunflowers, delightful villages. A fabulous region to visit.
Girona Province enjoys all the seasons, yet has a climate which makes it ideal as an all year round destination.
Some people call it "the sunny side of the Pyrenees" and we certainly have many many days of sunshine from summer through winter.
Please see our blog for more information and a temperature guide as we have experienced it - www.casanovagirona.blogspot.com "A handful of Hazelnuts".
SPRING - a time of fruit blossom and poppies, sun and warmth.
SUMMER - Fabulous summer heat, but not the intense, prolonged heat of the south and interior; a dry heat away from the coast.
AUTUMN - September brings fresher air, but still ideal for sunbathing and enjoying the pool. In October, nights do start to become chillier and usually in mid October shorts are discarded at night for long trousers and socks.
WINTER - In general mild, sunny days and blue, blue skies - real feel-good weather. Nights are chilly, and we have occasional beautiful frosty mornings, which warm up quickly in the sun. We experience a greater variation in winter temperatures from chilly nights, as low as minus 3 to sunny 12 to 18 degrees during the day. The sun really does make the difference. So, big jumpers at night and t-shirts during the day.
As with any country in the world, Catalunya can experience changeable weather, occasional cloudy days and some rain, but these grey days don't last, rain tends to fall in a fairly short downpour, and the province has, in general, superb weather with lots of sunshine, without the extreme heat or cold of the south and interior, nor the rain of the northern side of the Pyrenees.
The pool can easily be used from April through October. It is south facing, soaks up the sun all day and is sheltered by the garden wall. Covered in the winter, so you can take a dip if you wish !
The Girona / Brunyola area
Casa Nova D'en Borra is situated in the La Selva region of Girona Province, to the south of Girona and is superbly located for guests to enjoy all aspects of the province.

Car hire in the area is all connected to Girona airport and train station. Very often the cheapest provider is through your flight company or rail travel company; an offer connected to a store reward card, motor breakdown provider etc ( ie Sainsbury's nectar card, the AA ) or through a broker. When friends were stranded here in Catalunya in April 2010 when flights were grounded due to the ash cloud, Europcar came to their rescue, with one way car hire from Carcassonne to Calais and no excess charges - booked at Girona airport in person.
Please check with the car hire provider, as they all differ, to check that you can drive the car into France if you wish to explore further, with no excess charges.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Case Nova D'en Borra. The house is well located - easy access to Girona airport but set in attractive wooded countryside. The house itself has been carefully renovated and the attention to detail was noted; it was very comfortable and felt like home (if only we had the space!). There are lots of things to do nearby - the coast, interesting pottery shops, lots of walking or Girona/Barcelona, or you can chill on the terrace. This is an excellent base for a holiday with family or a group of friends and the owners are very friendly and are nearby if required. We have recommended a great holiday destination to many friends since returning and hope to go before too long! J&R, UK |

After a warm welcome from the owners Gill and Chris we were shown to our lovely bedrooms in the spacious and beautiful Masia that is in a wonderful tranquil location close to Girona airport. We spent the first few days relaxing by the pool, walking and cycling in the surrounding woodlands and hazel groves. We had several evening meals that were magnificent, cooked by Chris using the best of local produce some produced in his own garden. Gill and Chris were very helpful and provided excellent recommendations on places to visit which all added to our superb holiday experience. The house and surrounding gardens are very spacious so next time we will be bringing some friends. This is definitely somewhere to stay if you are looking for some peace and quiet in beautiful countryside. |
