About the home

Enjoy your own 11th century historic castle with a relaxed and comfortable way of living. Adjacent to a nature preserve yet within walking distance to a village and only 8 km to the medieval walled city of Girona. Perfect for couples or families of up to 14 persons; all ages are welcome and the castle is a favourite destination for groups with children.

Located in Spain's region of Catalunya, midway between Barcelona and the French border, Castel d'Escales is 30mins by car to the most breathtakingly beautiful, unspoilt part of the Mediterranean's Costa Brava with its small coves, traditional fishing villages, and award-winning, golden sand beaches.

Our rates make a luxury castle holiday very affordable. Even during the high season a group of 14 guests stays for less than Eu80 per person per night.

The castle provides a peaceful and unique haven convenient to everything this spectacular part of Spain has to offer. Bookings are for a one week minimum stay during the months of May through September.

While the property is self-catering, we have a wonderful English-speaking resident host, who is also a gourmet cook and will provide delicious meals if desired (meals and wine are extra and not included in the rental price).

Wine tastings based on your preferences can be arranged at the castle wine cellar (at a supplemental rate).

Simple and basic requirements:
50% of rental fee on confirmation of booking
50% final rental amount due 60 days before arrival (rental fee paid by wire transfer)
500Eu security deposit is also required upon arrival which will be returned at the end of stay

The Costa Brava/Catalonia/Barcelona region

Castel d'Escales is 8 km from the medieval, small city of Girona and is within easy reach of the Costa Brava's remaining pristine and idyllic beaches, pretty coves, and charming fishing villages. It is a 1.5 hour drive to the Catalan capital city of Barcelona with its vibrant modernist architecture and half an hour to Figueras and the world-famous Salvador Dali museum.
Local favourites include renowned botanical gardens perched on cliffs overlooking the sea that offer exceptional views of the rugged coastline, archaeological Greco-Roman ruins at Empuries, and the beautiful, historic village of Besalu with its 12th century Romanesque bridge.

The Girona / Celra area

Celra is a small, authentic village within walking distance from the castle with bakeries, butcher, fishmonger (fresh local meat and fish), small grocer, church, and sports bar/tabac that serves good tapas.
Each day of the week a different village or town throughout the area holds an open-air market.
Girona's pedestrian-only and stylish Old Town is captivating with more than 1,000 years of architectural and cultural history mixed in with chic and interesting shops, cafes, and museums. The gothic Cathedral, Arab baths, and important medieval Jewish quarter are featured highlights.
Superb restaurants are 15 mins from the castle including 'El Celler de Can Roca' in Girona, ranked Number 2 in S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2011 and 2012.

“Spanish idyll” Our party included 10 adults, two teenagers and three children. We had plenty of room to spread out during the day and the dining room was large enough to accommodate sit-down family dinners.... more
