Further details indoors

The house is a spacious property on two floors. On the first floor are 4 bedrooms (one king, one double, one twin and one bunk bed). There is a family bathroom and one en suite, a spacious library with TV and comfortable seating, fully fitted kitchen and living/dining areas, and sunny raised terrace overlooking the rear garden with countryside views.

The ground floor/basement has a further double bedroom with en suite, small games room, games cupboards, and a large second kitchen/utility with table and sofa bed, providing yet another room for relaxing. In addition the large garage has a table tennis table.

Heating if required in the winter months is by electric heaters in each room, and in addition there is an open fireplace in the living room.

The dining area indoors has seating for six, with an additional drop leaf table and chairs which can be added if more people wish to eat together. During the summer it is lovely to eat outside on the sunny terrace, which has a retractable awning for shade.

The library is well stocked with toys and games, books and dvd/videos. There are two televisions at the property, one of which has UK freeview channels.

Further details outdoors

The gardens are fully gated and enclosed, with an area of orchard (please help yourselves to fruit in season during your stay) lawns and flower beds. The back of the house has a large raised terrace (south facing) with patio doors from the kitchen and further patio doors from the dining room, and lovely countryside views in the direction of Fontenay in the distance. We love our long, warm summer evening meals out here watching the sun go down.

The house is well set back from the road with a long front drive and is fully detached with ample private parking. At one side of the house is a large clothes line for freshly drying any washing you have. There is an outdoor tap and hosepipe on the other side of the house. Our friendly neighbours' gardens border the property to the east and west.

We often play boules or croquet in the garden which is lovely for children to play under the watch of parents on the raised terrace. There are 3 adult bicycles available for use by guests.

Well behaved pets welcome at a small additional charge of £35 per week.

Bedding and bath/hand towels provided, but please bring own beach towels.

The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region

The micro-climate of the Vendee helps to make it one of the sunniest places in France with nearly 2,500 annual sunshine hours on average every year.

The surrounding countryside, forests and lakes make for a perfect family holiday, and there are many beautiful local villages, including Vouvant, one of the most beautiful villages in France, just on the other side of the Mervent forest.

The glorious Vendee beaches are renowned for their sunshine, broad sandy beaches and many watersports.

The old sea faring town of La Rochelle with its harbour, fabulous aquarium and cobbled shopping streets, and the silver sanded Ile de Re are an easy drive just under an hour from the property.

An easy drive to the North (about an hour) is the Puy du Fou, a spectacle of medieval re-enactment on a breathtaking scale, one of France's greatest tourist attractions.

Fontenay le Comte

Our village is a charming, peaceful place, with a hairdresser, church, bar/restaurant, school and park. The village is right on the edge of the Mervent Forest, a vast nature lovers' paradise of wooded valleys and lakes perfect for cycling, walking, sailing and canoeing.

The beautiful public park stretches out starting just next to the house and covering the length of the village with its fields, running circuit, tennis court, boules pitch and children's play area, all free to use for those staying in the village.

The boulangerie for fresh croissants, bread and amazing cakes, is just at the top of the hill in Pissotte, reachable by a 5 minute cycle ride or even early morning jog!

The historic capital of the Vendée before Napoleon's time, Fontenay le Comte is only 3km away, with its imposing cathedral, quaint old streets, and all modern services including supermarkets and restaurants, sports halls, swimming complex, beauty treatments, karting, museum, theatre and tourist information. There is a market in the square by the Cathedral on Saturday mornings.

The nearby villages (particularly St Michel le Cloucq, 5 minutes drive away) have great French 'bric-a-brac' depots for those second hand French antique bargains. Pissotte, just a 5 minute bike ride away, has wine tasting of its own vintages and wine to purchase direct from the vinyard, as well as a lovely creperie.

Don't miss Vouvant, one of the 'most beautiful villages in France', just on the other side of the Mervent forest, for a walk around the historic streets, views from the Melusine Tower, and the lovely coffee shops.

"Lovely house, great location, good value."

Massive house in a quiet village and country location, but loads to do nearby. It would easily accommodate a couple of family's or friends travelling together. Was excellent value and easy to find even though it was our first time travelling in France. Loads of room and books and games, videos and DVD's made it feel very homely. Even a piano, although the kids wouldn't leave it alone so I'm not sure that was a bonus. My son who is 7 loved the table football and ping pong downstairs, so lots to do when hanging around the house. We ate on the veranda most nights with views out over farmland. It is not overlooked. There is a big forest with loads of walks and a retro theme park which was excellent. There's a zoo in there too, all 10 minutes away. The beaches were 45mins away and lovely and deserted. We had a day of culture in La Rochelle which was an hours drive and you must go there, it's lovely, historic old architecture, if a bit overpriced. There was lots more to do but we only stayed a week. A great base for any holiday.
